One thing that's going to make it easier is that China's rise isn't going to be at the fast pace it's been. With an export driven economy and all of their global customers in recession you can bet growth will be in the single digits for at least the next decade.

I was kinda hoping Kim Jong Il would one day host a SNL show but I guess with his health and all that's not likely to happen.

That's interesting but I wouldn't use that example as a reflection on how everyone in Japan thinks. I have yet to meet any J-person who didn't consider Kaneshiro to be Japanese. At the very least he's a Japanese actor, which is interesting because in the special features of the DVD House of Flying Daggers (Lovers in Japan) he's introduced as a "Chinese Actor who is popular in Japan". A view that kinda dumps on both Taiwan and Japan in one shot.

Ban Trick-or-Treating. It's just common sense. It puts children at risk for what? So that people are forced to spend money on buying all these sweet candies that are horrible for the children's health and teeth? What an incredibly stupid practice. Trick-or-treating is fun for little grade schoolers. But high school kids and adults should just go to Halloween parties.

Invasions aren't legal or illegal. If you had your way Saddam would till be in power and the Iraqi people all happy right?

If these Iraqis spent half the time on getting their country secured and it's act together as they do worrying about when the US troops will leave, we actually could leave. Like tomorrow.

Well drunk rowdy behavior by J-salarymen isn't going to affect the image of foreigners is it? Japan has plenty of places to get away from the "grey monotone" and if partying is to be done it can done in a non-public place. Just as it's done here in the USA. We have an annual Halloween Parade but nobody throws parties on public transportation. The NYPD would put it down in 20 minutes.

No matter how you cut it, this kind of behavior doesn't do any good for the image of foreigners in Japan.

should be held in a house. Or some other equally non-public location. Holding one on a train or a train station is assinine and displays utter disregard for others as well as common sense.

Microsoft just may learn that with the global recession in full swing now many companies and home users even moreso may not feel like dishing out another $200 or so for yet another new version of Windows. At some point even an OS maker has to be able to answer the consumer's question "will this new version save me money somehow?" The answer is probably not since no "new" version of windows has actually saved anyone any money. Forcing consumers to "upgrade" ever since W95 has been nothing more than a function of MS telling us how great the new version is, new software (or hardware) requiring the newer OS, and PC makers preloading the newer OS on their latest products. It's really been, and continues to be quite a scam.

AP used the incorrect term "Army major" rather than a Major in the JGSDF. Even though the term Ground Self Defences Force appears in the article itself. JT goes ahead and runs this clip including the erroneous term. So a JT reader says;

As a former scuba diver I find it hard to fathom encountering difficulties while snorkeling. At least short of serious complications like a heart or brain seizure or something similarly sudden. However I've seen crowds of snorkeling tourists and have to agree that there are alot of people snorkeling who don't have enough experience in open water. A simple around the neck vest with CO2 should be worn during snorkeling. These snorkelers don't free dive anyway.
