"This was not random, and not specifically against Americans. The victims wore no clothing that would indicate being from the US."
And the victims didn't look like Gwailo? Come on, they stood out like the proverial thing in the punchbowl. Without being able to question the perpetrator it's nearly impossible to discount anti-foreignerism at such an early stage. Condolences to the victims, an totally uncalled for tragedy.

"Clinical obesity can also be defined as an illness and often needs medical treatment. These people become obese regardless of their diet or habits. Have you people no sympathy? No compassion? These people are not animals they are humans and deserved to be treated with respect and dignity. I'm not sure if I could say the same for some of you."
The weight of the total aircraft including it's passengers is vital to lift and fuel consumption. It is math and physics. Neither of which care just how any particular passenger got to the weight they are or whether they are happy or suffering. I don't think there's any need to proclaim that these people are not animals since no one is suggesting that they travel in the cargo compartment. Now, have you no compassion or sympthy for the majority of passengers who have to suffer being squished or have to pay the same airfare to transport a small net weight as the passenger with double the net weight? In principle, the moment that airlines started covering their additional fuel costs by charging more for luggage over a pre-set limit this issue of obese passengers was bound to arise.

"expected move in Japan."
What was expected? That an airliner returned to where it left after the receipt of a threat of this nature? I would expect this type of action anywhere in any country.

The cost of the airfare should be based on a TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE PASSENGER PLUS THEIR LUGGAGE. Acceptance of check-in luggage is already subject to acceptable dimensions. So why can't the same be applied to the passengers. Pretty harsh perhaps, but we're all paying through the nose for fuel, and he airlines are doing everything they can to make the craft lighter.

"Damn Japanese hierachy, bully society the even enters the military. "
This has little to do with Japan. It happens in militaries all over the world. Even in colleges.

"Outside the Asiatic nations beheld with contempt, jealousy and alarm the departure of one of their number from Turnian ideas, principles, and civilization. China, with ill-concealed anger, Corea [sic] with open defiance, taunted Japan with servile submission to the "foreign devils".

"And the mayor of hiroshima went on to say that he and the mayor of nagasaki will next week visit Nanking to apologise for the murderous blood thirsty deeds of the emperors' soldiers"
Comments like this emanate from people who still do9n't quite "get" what Hiroshima is all about. If this were solely to make an issue out of "Japanese victims of WWII" or to express hatred and blame to the United States then hoe can this happen?? "Some 45,000 people gathered to attend this year’s ceremony in the western Japanese city, including diplomats from 55 countries." What are these diplomats from China smd Russia doing there?

Illegal immigration is problem everywhere on this planet. There will always be a flow of people from lesser developed places to more devloped places where better earnings can be had. This is true of the United States, Japan, and EU.

Wow, what a silly headline. Gives the impression that Japan is behind Sudan and Ethopia. When in fact it;s behind Sweden.

"Maybe the Americans don't talk about it, but aren't they also there in case Japan militarizes in a direction they don't like?"
Certainly that was true post WWII. But Japan re-militarizing in the way it did in the first half of the 20th century is practically impossible. The US has been trying to normailze their military since the Korean War without success.

"No. The islamists who committed this terrorist attack are fighting for the same kind of "freedom" as the islamists who flew the plane into the WTC. That China is a dictatorship does not change that. Sorry, but relativizing does not work here."
WilliB:
The islamists who flew the planes into WTC killed inncocent third party civilians, in the United States, not in some mideast country. The islamists who commited the act in the aricle killed paramilitary police, ie Chinese govt authorities, in the Uighur autonomous region which was occupied by China in 1960. Sorry but there IS a difference. To be exactly the same in my book, these Uighur separatists would have to have killed innocent Chinese civilians in China outside the Uighur Autonmous Region. When we invaded Afghanistan and rounded up these jihadists we discovered something of a problem. We ended up capturing Uigher separtists who had no interest in fighting the "Western Infidels" but were receiving training from the Taliban solely to fight the Chinese who had occupied their land of East Turkestan. The world isn't as black & white or on a 6th grade level as many folks think.

"As long as there are actively hostile countries such as North Korea in the region the US Army will always be "welcomed" in Japan. The US strategically wants North Korea to stay hostile so they would always have justification for their existence."
I disagree with the above. England and Italy aren't exactly surrounded by hostile countries, but we are welcomed to maintain bases there.

As a New Yorker I have little to no respect for Jihadists. But this is an example of the saying "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter".

This is a non-event blown way out of proportion by the anti-nuke crowd. Previously the Houston may or may not have leaked an insignificant amount of radiation, and monitoring while she was in Sasebo did not trigger any alarms. The La Jolla obviously just got there and nothing has happened. Ans as usual monitoring for radiation will take place. That's it end of story.

"Whether Japan needs to have US military bases is a different question, of course."
Not at all. Unless Japan is prepared to become a nuclear power. Which it can very easily physically but just doesn't want to mentally. As long as Japan wants to stay under the US nuclear umbrella they get our bases with the package. So far for the last 60 years Japan has found it to be to their benefit, and even moreso during the last 10-15 years with even greater integration between the JDSF and US forces.

Depends entirely on how one defines "success". If it means that the games will start, there will be competition, it will end, yes it will be a success. If it means that China will have been able to put her best face forward to the world, no, it's already a failure. If it means did the IOC make a good choice in choosing Beijing, no they ought to be fired. If it means will lots and lots of foreign visitors come to Beijing, then no it's a failure.
