    Because Japan's most powerful friend and nuclear guardian wants Japan to agree to collective defense. In plain English- if China attacks Taiwan, and we have to defend it we want Japan to join in.

    Actually, Japan may be far from a perfect democracy but it's way closer to that than communist. Furthermore, China isn't exactly communist anymore either, socialist yes, bit not communist.
