I've been seeing Ito-En bottled tea sold in various supermarkets. The Whole Foods chain have carried them for a few years. It's a good thing that Americans can enjoy "real" green tea instead of the excruciatingly crappy Rasberry-Honey-Gingseng-Dimsum-Flavored sweet Green Tea sold by US manufacturers.

Mr Rudd, being the first and only leader to speak fluent Mandarin has been accused from all directions of being Sino-Centric and causing harm to Austalias relations with other Asian powers like Japan and India. Faced with the huge task of reparing this, he becomes the first western leader to visit Hiroshima. Absolutely brilliant course of action.

"I think PM Rudd understands asian culture very deeply;laying a wreath doesn't mean apology or anything ,just a recognition of disasters which war can cause."

This begs the question of whether Mr Rudd can appreciate that Japanese politicians visit the Yasukuni Shrine to pray for peace, not worship war criminals.

I find the statement "there is no market for whale meat in Norway" highly dubious. http://www.highnorth.no/library/Culture/Recipes/no-wh-me.htm http://www.planetark.com/dailynewsstory.cfm/newsid/25069/story.htm http://www.jacobsen.no/anders/blog/archives/2002/08/13/eatingwhalesteak.html http://uktv.co.uk/food/thread/threadid/16646

I think you're being excessively harsh (expecting an awful lot from) on CIVILIANS who may have never experienced or have not been trained to respond to an unexpected emergency situation. For most civilians, it takes time to understand a given situation and then to respond, in whatever manner. And responses for the untrained can range from trying to administer help personally (if so trained), calling 911 (which it seems some did), going into denial, right doiwn to having a nervous breakdown. If you're argument is that we as a society in general have become more insensitive to others in need as compared to say 30-50 years ago, yes, that's an undeniable fact. Probably true in all major cities around the world. If something like this happened to me, which is unlikely cause I dont cross the street in the middle of moving traffic, I would be happy to get help in 90 seconds.

I saw the video and I think this is blown out of proportion. People don't walk around expecting an accident of this sort to happen. When it does, there's disbelief, confusion, curiosity, trying to figure out what's going on, all before they psychologically accept what has happened. Then there are those who deny what's happened. The video shows just that. If several 911 calls were placed that would be expected. And if a police cruiser was on-site in 90 seconds hell that's pretty damn fast. Finally I don't understand the victim walking across the street diagonally ignoring the obviously active two way traffic to start with. Third party passerbys are going about their own business, they didn't all witness the accident from the videocamera's point of view, and they aren't all trained emergency medical personnel. Addition here in the U.S. one can not jump to take action in a case like this without the risk of being sued by the victim or victims fanmily later because one acted as a good samaritan without any medical training or jurisdiction. Calling 911 ASAP is the correct thing to do. I do not think this video, showing the first 90 seconds of an accident reflects negatively upon the people of Connecticut or the U.S. in any way.

"So much for returning honor and dignity to the White House. Bush and his crew have been a total disgrace."

So...Bill's playtime with what's her face and a cigar in the oval office was more dignified?

"Did not 911 happen? Did it not expose our lax entry system?

"No, actually I believe it didn't expose "your lax entry system". Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the hijackers have LEGAL visas, didn't they use their REAL passports and weren't all their documents in perfect order?"

Exactly. And that was LAX. Today the issuance of Visas and background checks are on a different scale from pre-911. The background verification of Visa-Waiver entrants has been a loophole because there has been insufficient time to complete a check, a situation which will, all going well, be corrected by having a minimum of 72 hours to complete.

"As to why it's paranoid - statistically you have a much bigger chance to be killed by a stray lightning, in a car accident or, if you live in Alaska, by being trampled by an angry moose. The "security" measures proposed by various governments (and by that I also mean the fingerprinting in Japan, by the way) have very little to do with actual security - they're just there to provide the illusion of it."

So you would advocate doing NOTHING? Those like you who whine incessantly about how "this mesure doesn't do anything" are always the ones who have absolutely nothing to suggest as an alternative action. Am I wrong? And don't give this "statistically" garbabge about getting hit by lightening because I personally was in Manhattan on 9/11/2001 and it was no joke or theater.

It's really time that Japan joined the rest of the world in working towards eliminating the smoking habit altogether.

What a disaster year for China. The Beijing Olympics aren't going to be what they had hoped, a coming out party with China's prettiest face. The Tibetan movement and China's hardheaded response and it's rabid nationalism assured that the West would see China's ugly face instead. Realizing that many Western visitors may not come, China went on a massive kiss-Japan's butt program to ensure that at least the wealthy Japanese will come amd spend their money. Then the Earthquake, a tragedy for the people, the fear now of disease, the people angry at the shoddy construction of the schools. Not a good year for China as they had hoped. So will China win the most gold medals this year? Probably. It would be in the best interests of the country and national morale.

"More bllsht from the paranoid U.S. government. Travel becomes almost unbearable these days."

why do you consider it BS? And why do you think it is "paranoid"? Did not 911 happen? Did it not expose our lax entry system?

True it's an addditional hassle, and effectively eliminates the very benefits that the Visa-Waiver Program was intended to provide to tourists and the tourist industry. But one can not deny that it may be a loophole for entry. We can thank the terrorists for this along with all the other security hassles.

The term "Gaijin" may or may not be derogatory, and depends on the context and it's use. So much so that among us "Gaijin" there are differences of opinion as to whether that world is even offensive. In contrast, the three letter derogatory term for Japanese (both of them) no matter how it may be used, is always offensive and derogatory. I think that is an enormous difference between those two words.

"And seems as well your idiotic CIC forgot there was no oil in Germany or Japan... oh, and that WWII was COMPLETELY different than the illegla invasion of Iraq and subsequently meaningless war."

    • We didn't invade Iraq for the oil. If we did I wouldn't be paying $4.45 a gallon for regular, would I?
    • Actually oil was very much part of WWII. Especially for Japan.
    • With a name like Smith, your CIC isn't the same as mine??

Remarkable that Sharon Stone is the only one who has to apologize for saying what a great many people, including all those who genuinely feel sorry for the victims of the earthquake, have thought even momentarily in the back of their minds. True, it's crude and it was better for her to apologize than destroy all chances of future income. Of course Chinese media are typically ridiculous: "The official Xinhua News Agency said in a commentary Thursday she was the “public enemy of all mankind.” I guess Sharon can share the title with the Dalai Lama.

Seems our CIC isn't taking into account that both the Germans and Japanese gave a sh*t about rebuilding their countries. The only thing the Iraqis care enough to kill each other over is religion.

Derogatory names or ethnic groups in the US are based on the concept of "you are below us" and "we are above you". This is a carry over from the earliest racial history of the US involving the Native Americans and the African slaves. The Japanese concept is "Us" and "You others" which places more emphasis on "we are vastly different" rather than above or below. Of course historically that issue was handled through the laws. I do not think that when a J-person uses "gaijin" even in the most derogatory manner, it comes anywhere near the "subhuman" imagery attached, especially during WWII, to the English derogatory words. But you are correct that chilfdren, not only in Japan but in all countries need to be taught that certain words, labels, are indeed wrong. http://www.qualitybusinessmedia.com/funny.jpg
