"I'm so sick of South Korea and Japan bashing the US for helping then defend themselves"

I think you are confusing the resistance on the part of the local population, and I mean "local" to the US bases and ports, with the positions of the South Korean and Japanese governments. If they don't want us there all they have to do is say so. Subic Bay is proof.

"As long as you let someone invincibly strong guard you, how can you be serious about your own safety?"

Thanks for the rewording but it raises more questions than it answers. I can't imagine a more serious approach towards your own safety than to let someone invincibly strong guard you. Would having that invicibly strong someone NOT guard you improve your own security? Obviously not.

The term gaijin literally is nothing compared to the slew of derogatory terms we have here in the US for just about every national, racial ethnic, religous group including sexual orientation and body shape. The Japanese "we/them" concept is hardly unique to Japan. Being called Xeno in Greece or Goym in Israel means literally the same thing. It's only natural that an isolated island country would develop that type of self identification. If you don't like being called Gaijin, then leave where you can be one of "us" instead of "them". Foreigners (gaijin/gaikokujin) here in the US have to carry green cards which state ALIEN REGISTRATION CARD on the top. "Alien" in the immigration context meaning Gaikokujin or Gaijin. Nothing wrong with it. Too many people try to compare Japan to the U.S., a country made up of immigrants from all over the world and consequently has developed, rather painfully, laws against racism. As for being offended that the Japanese consider all gaijin in one group, I can tell you that probably over 90% of Americans consider all Asians to be "Chinese". Of course we also consider all Europeans to be the same too. In summary I don't think the word Gaijin is a racist term. It can, as other terms can be as well, used in a racist manner.

"The dangers that Washington identifies within the region cannot be fully shared by Japan as long as Japan depends on the U.S. for its security."

Could you explain this please? It would seem to me that the reverse is true. That as long as Japan depends on the United States for it's security it is "forced" to share the dangers in the region as identified by the United States.

    This is classic.

I'm not sure if it's honorable or not. But I do know that if done quickly it certainly saves us taxpayers alot of money.

"Also, I know Nick's mum personally...and not only did she lose her son for seven years due to this stupid system here in Japan, but she also lost her husband who died of a heart attack during all this. Have some compassion."

Don't mean to sound heartless but it seems to me that Nick's mum lost her son for 7 years due to said son'e stupidity. Without that, nothing else would have followed.

Remarkable that an article about Iceland and whaling, which makes no mention of Japan wghatsoever, is sufficient to cause people to write anti-Japan posts. I have always held that there was always a racist element to this anti-whaling thing and I'm almost always proven right. BTW, where are those Sea Sheperd people? Are they off the coast of Iceland yet?

"They had a kimono outfit??? Interesting."

Yes, I's like to see photos of the British Airways stewardesses* from the 1970s wearing kimonos.

    • It's ok to all them that. It was before they evolved into flight attendants.

I wish these airlines would concern themselves more with issues like eliminating flight schedule delays, not losing my luggage and flight attendants that are easier on the eyes.

"“I said very plainly, I said, ‘You’ve got to be concerned about the effects of high oil prices on some of the biggest customers in the world. And not only that, of course, high energy prices are going to cause countries like mine to accelerate our move toward alternative energy.”

Thank you Mr President. We've had since 1973 to do this but your oil industry buddies really had no incentive to push this. Now every soccer mom in suburbia is driving an SUV the size of a WWII vintage tank.

"By the way, soothsayer, there's no doubt about it, especially in Japan. Young people overwhelmingly can't cook"

This is invariably true. But it certainly isn't limited to Japan. Here in the US no young people can cook. In fact alot of older people can't either. This clearly is a characteristic of modern society globally.

"McCain should consider the notion that just wanting a gun might be an indication of a mental problem."

The above statement in itself suggests a strong possibility of a mental problem. I don't see anyone wanting to acquire a legally sold item as an indication of anything. http://www.azdps.gov/ccw/

I agree. All the Chinese Anti-J sentiment is on this forum. Runs counter to the official position of the Chinese govt.
