"Wait until Whales start hunting Japanese, then lets see how Japanese like it. Moby Dick shall return!"

That would actually be pretty cool. But let's add the Kangaroos that attack the Aussies, the Cows that attack the Americans and the Dogs that attack the Koreans...and everything that lives attack the Chinese.

My comment wasn't an effort to create any "moral equivalecy". It was to point out that under wartime conditions alot of people do what they normally wouldn't do if they were in society. That's what my uncle told me. And this is from guy who had been trained to kill the enemy as they were subhumans.

The treatment of US POWs as exemplified by the Death March, being just one of numerous incidents of violations of all accepted military protocols was an atrocity. The military controlled Imperial Japanese Govt at the time was a sadistic overzealous ultranationalist organization from the top to bottom that didn't care about anyone, third party civilians, enemy POWs, even their own members. The best thing that ever happened to Japan was that it was utterly destroyed. Fortunately those responsible were tried and convicted. However, my late uncle who served in Guadalcanal when he was 19 told me that what some of our Marines were doing wasn't exactly in accoradance with proper military protocol either. When they say war is hell, I guess it's not a movie cliche.

Is this what constitutes a scandal in Japan?

"The Japanese authorities have yet to succeed in their request to have a warrant issued with Interpol"

Interpol doesn't issue warrants. They are not a Court of Law.

"As for the arrest warrants, what a waste of time. Like any country in the world is going to extradite them. In addition I don't see them coming to Japan on vacation seeing Japan is not sensitive to their views. So keep trying to make the rest of the world believe you Japan, but the people who matter know ever thing. What a bunch of liars."

Hate to break it to you but Japan has extradition treaties with most countries. And the crimes that the Sea Sheperd peoplke comitted is a crime in every country, amnd they were widely publicized globally. It isn't going to be hard to get them extradited if they are found and captured. What opinions other nations may have regarding whaling is completely irrelevant to the issue.

"Yes, but the Koreans don't go halfway across the world to butcher dogs either. Japan should hunt whales in its own backyard...if there were any left to hunt."

Neither the Minke Whale (estimated over 500,000) nor the Humpback Whale are on endangered list. The Blue Whale and Fin Whale are in fact endangered with estimates of 2000. Neither the Japanese, nor Icelanders and Norwegians hunt the endangered species. This wouldn't make any sense for any peoples who eat whales would it? The Koreans don't butcher dogs in other countries (at least not openly) because there are laws protecting the dogs. Whales are hunted in international waters, therefore the only protection they have is their classification and whatever is approved by the IWC. Of course countries like Iceland anmd Norway don't bother to use any "loopholes" in the IWC rules, they simply ignore them. Now, if you were aware of the dog issue, you wouldn't be even attempting to brush it off as not being as significant as whaling in any which way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lcZcEKMmzY The fact is that this article pertains to acts of Piracy (and I could reasonably charge terrorism) which endangered human life at sea, a crime recognized universally by all seafaring nations, and whaling really has been the perpetrator's "excuse" for this behavior. This is of course nonsense, since there are many of the anti-whaling persuasion who do not commit crimes for the cause.

"If this is such a big deal and Japan is in the RIGHT, then why doesn't the Japanese Navy send out one of their destroyers to escort the whaling ship?"

Because they don't have a Navy. What they have is a Self Defense Force that has to go through mountains of law passing to be able to do anything outside of Japanese waters. I think it would probaly be far easier to get the Japanese Coast Guard out there for law enforcement.

"This next one takes the cake:

"Visiting Yasukuni Shrine doesn't, in and of itself, make anyone a Nationalist."

I've visted plenty of cathederals, and I'm not catholic. I've visted plenty of Jewish temples, amd I'm not jewish. Anyone with any experience in Japan knows that the Japanese have no be the most secular people on this planet, constanstly going to shrines and clapping their hands simply because it's the thing to do without the slightest moment of spiritual thought as to where they are and what they're doing. So yes, visiting the Yasukuni Shrine does not make anyone a nationalist. Especially since with the excception of some fringe nutbags most normal people seem to go to pay respects and pray for peace, either of which is expecially "nationalist".

Bust their rear ends. Endangerment of life at sea is an international crime. This isn't about whaling.

"Ossan: Oh... you remember that? funny, I don't remember the comment, which means it must have stung you some to stick so well in your memory. Still, it was true then, and the lead is still ahead, albeit lower than before. BUT, there's no more judo for Japan to bank on, Taekwondo is coming up, and Korea's going to get gold in baseball if things continue as they are, so guess who's going to get more in the end? (plus, Korea is guaranteed to play in the men's bronze in this table tennis tournament, etc.). What's your point, anyway, Ossan? to come onto a thread where Korea beat the pants off Japan (and likewise with the men, though with closer results) and feign that Japan is doing better? Too bad, Ossan, because I was being pretty sportsman-like."

It stuck in my memory cause it was one of the dumest things I ever heard, boasting about medal position in the first week of the olympics. It also stuck cause it really displayed the extent of competitive fixation that inferiority complex can produce. My point has been proven by the current medal record. And even this may change one way or the other. But it's no big deal either way. That's sportsmanship.

    Smith;

So where's this huge lead in medals that Skorea has over Japan that you were proudly proclaiming a few days ago? Looks like that lead has evaporated?

"Remember the so-called victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and listen to so many spout off about the need for nuclear disarmament and desiring some utopian "peace of the world," yet so little attention to August 15, 1945.... Strange. Very strange, indeed."

I don't think it's so strange. You're comparing apples and oranges. Remermbering the end of WWII in the Pacific for most Americans is similar to remembering the end of WWII in Europe. It doesn't really register unless you happen to be in your 80s, because we've had so many military conflicts since then. Even Asia doesn't make much of it, mostly because they're forward looking, with the exception of China where it is reasonably justified. Note that the Koreans don't cause the truth is they were on the Imperial Japanese side in that war. Hiroshima is a much bigger deal because it includes people from all over the world because the civilian victims aren't being remembered as victimns of WWII so much as victims of the atomic age, which suggests mankinds entire future may lie in the ability and willingness not to ever use nuclear weapons against each other again.

"Start again and with simple sentences, please. OssanULTRA; Ditto."

OK here goes. The Yasukini Shrine became an issue when the 14 Class A-War Criminals were put there. Even the late Emperor Hirohito hasn't gone to the shrine since. I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong) that China never made an issue out of Yasukuni until these Class-A war criminals were moved there. I believe a good argument can be made for their removal, and that would resolve the issue. Pathat I "think" wants to expand this to 5700 war criminals, and he seems to be leaning toward the elimination of the shrine completely which I think is nowhere near as realistic or feasible as my suggestion. And for this I am, according to Pathat "sweeping it under the rug".

BTW, I'm hardly part of any "sweep-it-under-the-rug faction". If I were, I could easily claim that this is an internal issue for he Japanese govt and people to decide, end of story as we wouldn't be discussing this matter. But clearly you and I have different goals, I am seeking a way of resolving an issue for the advancement of peace among the neighboring countries of East Asia, in a realitic feasible way. You on the other and appear to have an agenda which requires the elimination of the Yasukuni Shrine itself which frankly, I don't see happening.
