I'd love to know how my taking my kids to HK for 2 weeks impacted anyone. Their school was closed and I work from home. Stop it with the generalizations already! Half the people who left are back already...

No, I'm just annoyed at the stayjins judging (harshly) the flyjins for a personal choice that isn't anyone else's business. Something terrible happened in this country, and instead of pulling together and showing empathy, we are criticizing and throwing stones.

Personally my choice to leave for 2 weeks wasn't motivated by newspapers: as a journo, I know to take what I read with a pinch of salt... but as a parent, when I see my kids are freaking out because all their friends have left, including those whose parents work for nuclear companies, my job is to keep them safe but also to make them feel safe. I don't regret my choice of leaving when my embassy recommended its "non-essential" citizens leave Kanto... and I hope I won't have to regret coming back.

On March 15th, Tokyo radiation levels were 23 times higher than normal levels. What's irrational about not wanting your kids to breathe that air?

People who depend on expats to make a living because their business provides specific expat-orientated services will definitely suffer for the next couple of months... some friends who have been living here for more than 20 years and are finding themselves out of work are thinking of throwing in the towel and going home, it's very sad....

There was a weird guy following the gaijin schoolgirls from the neighborhood to the local intl school (including my kid) every morning; the koban said nothing could be done about it until he did something physically to them...

One of the things that annoys me most about Japan is the absence of daylight savings! Of course it's going to save electricity!!! Do it already!!!!
Posted in: Do you think switching to daylight saving time in summer in Japan will help ease the power shortage?

I'm always amazed at how trusting Japanese people are- who wants to feed their children with vegetables from Fukishima?! Even if it said to be safe, why take the risk? It's important to support those farmers, but not by eating their potentially poisoned goods...

Some expats I know left the country but left their cats, birds, goldfish in their apartments with some extra food, thinking they would be back in a couple of days...it's already been 10 days since most of them left... horrible, horrible....

My kids' primary school has those (because their heads are too small for hardhats): each child has one in a little bag that hangs at the back of their chair, it's fire-proof and they put it on in case of an earthquake. They had to put them on last friday...

A lot of cabbies are old guys who lost their jobs and find driving a taxi is the only work they can get. As a policeman told us when a friend got hit by a taxi while riding a bike: "you should watch out for taxis, most of the drivers are very old and don't see well"!!!
A must-read about what can happen if you get into it with a J-cabbie: google "prison in japan, taxi stippy".... incredible story!

Smart microsystem technology is the way of the future! Pretty soon we'll all be implanted with wireless nano-sensors that will transmit our health data to our doctor and send us emails when something's wrong! Biohealth is revolutionary but quite scary too... Big brother is watching you!
