I'm sure that these entertainers get some basic education, because in Japan if you don't graduate from High School you are considered illiterate.
The headline should be changed to sound less sensationalistic.

In terms of spending money, Japanee, and maybe other affluent Asian countries', spend almost twice as much as the average North American or European Tourist. This is a well known historical statistic in the industry.
Back in my hometown, American tourists usually spend 3-4 days on he beach getting sunburn and drinking cheap alcohol. If they buy a t-shirt or a pair of beach sandals then those are the big spenders. Japanese tourists always like to be on the move, sign up for all the tours and go to all the nice restaurants. They are actually very easy to handle, since you can predict how they will behave or what they will need very accurately.
Hospitality has to do with making people feel at home. If you can make some money out of it then good for you. It doesn't have anything to do with whether you like the person or agree with them. It's the business of taking care of strangers. Of course, you can't expect much from that! If you want to deal only with nice people, then stay in your own house and never leave.
The thing about the guy carrying the woman's purse. No need to make fun of a man being a gentleman... I would think that's sort of the opposite in their homeland, where the husband walks 10 feet in front of the wife.
I agree with Sharky, this lady needs a new career...

best smilist. Its good that "talents" with good teeth are praised, since the average supermodel here has crooked teeth... Here they get a nose or boob job before even considering putting on some braces.

It would not have been discrimination if he was posted to Afghanistan or Iraq. Since he had plenty of experience treating Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome from soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, that would make him very well qualified to do counseling closer to the area of operations, where sometimes proper psychiatric care is not available.

Apec is very bullish on APEC collaboration, but a big player China is also trying to gain a major influence there. Japan will keep running into China eerywhere it goes around the region.
Iwo Jima would have had major strategic value during WWII when Japan's empire projected thousands of miles south/southwest, however these days it won't be of much value unless the kingdom of Tuvalu decides on going on a island taking spree.
Pool of Zen is right there should be no negotiating since the agreement is already in place. Unless there is a major referendum on the part of Japanese voters, there should be no democratic reason to reneg on the cooperation that has kept Japan out of the regional bullseye since 1957.
Politicians talking are just pandering to a small minority that makes a lot of noise, but they have not evaluated the economic impact enough to know it will be deadly to the Japanese economy to rock the boat at this time.

This is a good mockup of different technologies that are already available. However, the AI needs to immprove in many levels for this to work. Also, there is still no idea of the context, so the computer will not be able to interpret things correctly.
It may be better to use a remote VOIP system to stream live audio and video to a translator in a remote location. Would cost more than this, but is cheaper than a full-time translator.

Kimonos have been part of Japanese culture for hundreds of years. They will not and should not change, or be sexied up like Mrs. Ligron tried to do. That's more like Quentin Tarantino's job.

actually Japanese people are very well disciplined when it comes to turning the lights off at home. Still, there is a lot of light pollution in the commercial areas with buildings with lights on all night, etc.
I have only seen in Japan the concept of turning off the headlights when stopped at a red light to reduce light pollution.

I agree with other posters that abuse should be investigated more agrresively, and euthanasia for arbitrary reasons should be banned. Similar things also happen to Greyhounds.

He is busy with so many projects. From what you saw last year, his show took a lot of time and work to get perfect. Performing live in front of the industry's elite is extremly difficult to pull off like he did.
Onder why they didnt give the show all to Baldwin. I guess they figure he is not funny enough, and Martin will be the comic relief. Baldwin may not be irreverent, but he sure can act and do comedy.

If anything, the recession may force hostesses and other members of the mizu-shobai industry to be more agressive and cometitive when it comes to aqcquiring AND (wink wink) retaining clients.
In Japan, with 5-10 hostess bars and Kyabakura stacked up in every building, competition is fierce. Girls are pushed to the limit, most of the time so they can keep their jobs. Guys on fancy expense accounts are far and between, so after only a couple of visits anyone can become a high roller and get additional "perks".
The owner or manager usually looks the other way, and some even encourage their girls to have sex with customers, but rarely support them if they get pregnant, beat up, etc.

IBM had their X series without a optical drive for ages, and it rocks. I haven't kept up with the recent changes Lenovo is making, but their X tablet is their top of the line model. Once they get multitouch i'm getting one.
The mainstreaming of blu-ray drives will mean that people will want to have optical disks again in the future, unless there is a cheap way to have them as a USB or Express slot addon.
