as usual in Japan it's up to the boy's parents to decide who is good enough to marry. The fact that she is divorced and a single mother should have nothing to do with it.

Kyoko, to get the avatar create an account with www.gravatar.com. The trick is to use the same email address as your JT account and after you upload the mage it will show up automatically here. Took me a few minutes. Very happy to know you were born in PR. I'm developing PR tourism in Japan and need spokespeople let me know if you are interested.

once the dude boarded the boat he came under Japanese jurisdiction. He should have exercised his rights under whatever protections offered by maritime law, most likely in a court in one of those fancy cities in Europe.

Let's say it costs $2 Billion a year to keep a base open. This means that most of this revenue is booked in the host city or prefecture, and resulting personal and corporate income tax flows into the coffers of said area.
Also, "foreign" investment into Okinawa results in improved infrastructure of public utilities and roads.
If they don't want the base there, that's $2 billion in economic activity that will go somewhere else.
In my home country, there was similar problem with several US bases that also closed. Now that the bases is closed, tourism revenue is not able to compensate.
Of course, there are some environmental issues that need to be addressed. Use of depleted uranium and other dangerous chemicals has resulted in serious pollution, and now one of the former bases is even a Superfund site. Okinawan's got it good compared to us.

in Japan, more women lose their jobs when they get married than when they have children.
If they are married and decide to keep working after marriage, that in itself is commendable.
Other posters are right, Japan needs to step into the 21st century. Countries such as China are overtaking Japan in many areas. Other emerging countries such as India, Russia and Brazil still have to sort out many social issues, and in those cases serious changes need to be done as well.

when it comes to Japanese language, writing takes maybe 15 years to do properly. For me, i can get away with typing, but for a native, if they don't do it they will be illiterate.
Now that we are in 2010, perhaps Japan conducts a census and the government will not continue to cover up the sad news.
