If movies released faster in Japan they wouldn't have this problem. This is a symptom of an antiquated entertainment industry. On the odd occasion you do attempt to pay for a movie already in available for download in the USA - you can't because "it's not available in your region".

This is one of those none stories that scientists / companies release for funding or stock price reasons.. A bone for shareholders perhaps. Those RREs may as well be on the moon.

Good on these entrepreneurs for their success. And they've gotten additional financing. Great achievement thus far and good luck in the future.

To the naysayers posting comments here-- get competitive or get overtaken by guys like this.

I think the API service looks kick-ass. The only criticism I might have is mygengo may not be a global brand if that's the direction they're going.. The design of the shirt is the least important thing on their minds.

Can't say I blame the people leaving for their kids. Fukushima has really pushed a lot people to change life plans- or speed them up. But would be unwise to write Japan off on the business front. Wolf in sheeps threads. Still a lot of cash both personal and corporate around town.

I love hearing "irashaimase" when I enter a restaurant.

I hate hearing that closing music and the words "we're closing- please leave"

I love cheap set lunches for 1,000 yen with starter, main and drink (sometimes including dessert)

I hate hearing "it'll be 20minutes before you can enter the restaurant" (lunch I understand but for dinner… why not welcome the customer in anyway and have him pay for a drink-- don't let that business leave)

I love yelling out "sumimasen" across the restaurant/bar when I want something!

I hate NOT getting that thing I want when it's "off menu" eg "awa skuname" (a little foam on my beer)

I love it when they have "ebisu" beer.

I hate it when they ONLY have "asahi".

I love it when they say "maido" at the local yakitori shop when you're a regular.

I hate it when they seem to never recognize you at the "combini" which you go to every friggin' day!

    I love Dean's article.

I hate being told "if you don't like it you can leave this country".. or "nihon no bai wa".. grrr.

And I bet that if you didn't know the Japanese phrase "awa skuname"-- you do now and will use it everytime you order that "ichiban-shibori" or in my case "ebisu"..

I saw the "Governator" speak at the Keio Plaza Hotel this morning. He was entertaining and inspiring. Seems like he has a lot of initiatives on the go to stimulate the state's economy and also to stop overspending but he's inherited a difficult decision making system and an even crappier economy.

Agree with tokyotales... the real story is why no "discipline" from the authorities since 2008? Poor girl.

As a resident I hope they get the Olympics. And to add a little perspective to the negative comments that have gone before mine, every foreigner I speak to who lives in Japan also supports Tokyo's Olympic bid.

Nice article de luca. Unfortunately most of the JT comments are focusing on trying to find a boogy-man for the current worldwide meltdown. My advice to everyone is get over that.. that doesn't put cash in your pocket. Get on to thinking along the lines of de luca, face reality.. your business is now different. If you want insight into why?? Read Black Swan.

de luca offers some really practical ideas to implement to help people save their businesses (jobs, livelihoods) that took them years to build up. Business owners and leaders in those companies can be proactive not reactive to this doom and gloom that has arrived and in that find the new opportunities that will help them get through and build a solid business for the future.

I especially think this statement is on the money:

I would rather my clients have slightly lower margins on two times the revenue from a more diverse client base, than “sticking to their guns” and dying in the sand cowboy style, when premium rate paying clients go belly up one Sunday afternoon.

On the loan issue business owners could also rework existing loans (longer terms, better interest rates etc.). My understanding of those govt. loan rates is that they are in fact a lot cheaper than 3% for small businesses. The rate sheet I say was in the 1.3~2.5 range. Definitely worth taking a look at.

And last but not least.. quote from solarbuster

The logic now is "Why do companies go bankrupt?" Answer; because they can't repay debt.

I would answer that differently. The reason why companies go bankrupt is because they run out of cash.

Some funny comments! OK.. I'm going to stick my neck out here... I have actually seen William Silk perform at a medium sized Jazz venue in Roppongi Tokyo a couple of years ago, then met him afterwards. Pleasant guy but more importantly.. great voice.

I just cancelled a flight with Jetstar and only got a 30dollar cancellation fee. Cancelled with one week to go before my flight so was pretty happy about that. Haven't actually flown with them from TKO yet.

I'm sure if he just says sorry he'll be ok. Oh no. That only works when politicians break the law.
