    This is huge news.

But, Oh My God, some14some and The Munya Times..."RIP" for Kim Jong il? Seriously what is wrong with people on JapanToday and the overuse of "RIP"? I honestly want to know? Who are you people? Not even my deranged grandfather uses the term RIP. The only place you ever see RIP, other than this site, is on tombstones in cartoons. But here, every time anyone ranging from Kim Jong Il to an anonymous two year old dies and the kneejerk RIPs flow freely. Why don't some of you learn how to express yourselves and your thoughts in your own words rather than jumping to an outdated and hackneyed phrase.

I'll check this movie out when I can and judge it on its merits as a film. Historically, its pretty clear to most that atrocious things happened in Nanjing--maybe its not as well known as the Holocaust, but its no longer or a forgotten holocaust or unknown event...even in Japan. I don't think a film needs to be made just to publicize that Nanjing massacre, unless it can add something new to our understanding of that history and the human condition. This one might, or it might just be an interesting watch. That said, even the possibility that this is nationalist PRC propaganda should be troubling. Part of it is about selection...Nanjing happened, but as others here have pointed out, so have a lot of nasty things in Tibet and elsewhere on the Chinese side; Zhang Yimou and his like are not rushing to make a film that might be unflattering to China, make them question their government and their national solidarity--even if that might be more significant in the present day. He's not that brave, and what can we expect. But, honestly, in 2011 I am much less concerned about Japan, imperial or otherwise, and a bit more wary of the billions of highly nationalist Chinese living under an autocratic regime that controls what they can know and say, who are always searching for an external enemy to help bring them together.

"The agricultural provisions of the TPP are most definitely not in Japan's best interests"

Some people on this board (LRFAgain) seem to have tunnel vision about the TPP. First of all, the agricultural provisions might be in the interest of "Japan" if you mean the farmers and agricultural cooperative, but might be in the interest of a broader spectrum of Japanese consumers. And, please, spare me the resort to paranoid food self-reliance talk or spirituality of rice.

Second, the reason Japan would enter this TPP is because there is a lot more at stake than agriculture, and Japan stands to gain a lot in other more important sectors--say, export-oriented manufacturing. Is Japan's primarily an agricultural country? Is Japanese rice known throughout the world (not just in the minds of Japanese)? Try to have some perspective...I think some of you may have spent too much time in Japan.

Hey, I just checked something out. That stadium's capacity is 50,000, and yet NK allotted 150 seats for Japanese fans? Crazy, no? Granted, you might say that not many Japanese would want to go anyway. But those 150 are going to be surrounded by a sea of tens of thousands of angry, aggressive North Koreans. No thanks.

I wouldn't want to take a glance at a report like this and make some sweeping statement that it reflects poorly on the intelligence of an entire nation...but its really tempting.

I can't help but suspect that Sony being owned and shamed has something to do with their being a Japanese company...i.e. generally behind and incompetent. How are those "MD" players selling, Sony?

I concede that I really dislike the nationalist LDP politicians and I wish they would stop causing pointless trouble over Takeshima/Dokdo...whatever the history is, its in SK's hands now, and nothing short of a pointless war is going to change that.

That said, I find the South Korean (over-) reaction unseemly...nah, disgusting. Fighting nationalism with even more extreme blind nationalism. Do the three old jerks really pose any threat to the South Korean nation or their claims on the rocks? No. Its just the typical SK nationalism drama queen routine, over-sensitive and insecure. They should have let the three old nutballs go and have their feckless little sob party (on an island that isn't even Dokdo). It wouldn't have changed anything to let them in...except to demonstrate that Korea is a mature, secure country that values free speech and peaceful expression.

I'm surprised so many here on this board are defending the Korean response. Think about it: THREE Japanese dinosaur opposition hacks look like idiots--but on the other hand, MANY more Koreans in the government and the mobs look foolish and unstable for rising (sinking) to the provocation.

“We preferred domestic beef to foreign beef. Now, my family buys Australian beef.”

Hehe, in Japan, when soft cultural nationalism runs up against safety-shugi, safety-ism wins. I find both trends irritating, so I am simply amused.

"Because Japanese intestines are essentially different from Western ones, Japanese beef is better for Japanese people...errr, except when the beef glows in the dark. Gibu mi Ozzi-gyu!"

Hmm, I take this story with a grain of salt. It really sounds like Japanese tabloid authors projecting Japanese prejudices and fears onto other people. I've heard about discrimination toward Fukushima people within Japan already. Or look back to how people from Hiroshima were treated after the atomic bombing. It could be true though, but just a couple of isolated incidents rather than a trend.
