One more thing, neither North nor South Korea was allowed to be a member of UN until 1991, so there was no way that either could have officially filed for the revision of the name by itself, against Japan which already was a member since 1956.

I believe Kim Dae-Jung proposed "Sea of Peace" and "Sea of Friendship" as the new name, which were simply ignored and scoffed by the Japanese government.

Well, if Korea is being petty, then why doesn't Japan act bigger and just let it be renamed as something more neutral other than "Sea of Japan" which connotes that it belongs to Japan? And I like how the Japanese pretend they had nothing to do with its official naming…
