It's a shame Bachmann's quitting. I was really hoping she'd get more exposure - she makes Sarah Pailin look like Snow White. Would have loved to see her husband get outed (Richard Simmons, anyone?). With all these bigoted Republican contenders, it's like a freak show. When the economy needs fixing and a host of other urgent issues need to be addressed, these clowns just talk about gays, abortion, the break up of families (caused by straight philanderers like Gingrich and straight teenagers who have babies willy nilly), etc.

I voted Other (Freshness Burger). They're the only who can be bothered to make vegetarian burgers (at least I hope they are). They do an avocado and tofu one and a bean burger. They used to do a portobello mushroom burger. And they're all delicious.

I don't know if you could call this "being religious" or "being superstitious."

I'd call it superstition. Then again, I try not to walk under ladders. Similar, except it never gets crowded round ladders.

Your last bit - where does it say you have to go to BOTH the IO and the ward office? Right now it is just the ward office. In the new system I am guessing it is the immigration office? I doubt you would have to go to BOTH places under the new system?

    http://www.immi-moj.go.jp/newimmiact_1/en/port-city.html#anchor-city

I don't know - that's what is says on the official homepage. I assume (yet again) that 'notify' means going there in person. Since moving here from my last place, I haven't been back to any IO. Just checked the map, and there are plenty of IO's near me - all of them requiring well over a 1-hour journey. I'd rather just have one that was really close by.

My ARC expires in 2014. I think I'll leave it until then.

Juts found this from that website:

A mid- to long-term resident who has changed his/her place of residence is asked to bring his/her resident card to the municipal office of his/her new residence and notify the Ministry of Justice of the new residence within 14 days of moving to the new residence.

I was wrong. You have to go to the IO AND municipal office. I'm assuming this includes PRs.

    Nicky:

    PR status is permanent

Sorry, but PR is definitely not permanent (just like in some other countries I know). As far as I know, if you leave and come back without a re-entry permit, you lose it (can someone confirm this)? Now, what happens if, for some reason, I have to leave for more than one year (eg to look after sick relatives, etc)? This is why I'd prefer the gaijin tax because that gives you 3 years.

So PR's also have to inform immigration of any address changes within 90 days too? Popping down to the immigration office is not like popping down to your local ward office. Most of us don't live anywhere near an IO, and will have to take at least half a day off.

I am just concerned that if a gaijin and their Japanese spouse divorce, can they be booted out of the country and separated from their children?

If they have PR, they can't be booted out merely because of a divorce, but the second one - hell yeah! This is Japan, after all. Unless your ex-spouse decides to renew his or her PR in your country and gets caught.

    Taken from your Guardian link:

Leading members of the unit were secretly granted immunity from prosecution in return for giving US occupation forces access to years of biological warfare research. Some went on to occupy prestigious positions in the pharmaceutical industry, health ministry and academia.

At least they know how to find an ASHTRAY for their stubs, instead of the road/side walk water ever!

Are you joking? Have you seen the butts on the streets out there? A smoker lives right next to me, and he always leaves a trail of ash inside the building, with the occasional butts. Oh well, there goes the Japan clean myth.

As for JT, they do a lot more than just Tobacco in their product range.

I know. That's why I refuse to buy any PET bottle drinks made by them.

If people get that annoyed by it then don't come to Japan. Don't come to a country expecting them to cater to your needs, integrate into theirs.

This is not about catering to NJ's needs. Lung cancer affects Japanese lungs too (no, Japanese lungs are not longer than foreign lungs).

To this day, I don't think JT admits (in public) there's a link between tobacco and lung cancer.

Yes, the performances from everyone were far from perfect, but as I recall, Chan and Takahashi both fell only once in their free. I must admit, his crashing into the barrier in his short was funny though. He thought so too.

The Chinese killed many more of their own people than all of the deaths combined.

I see. So we'd better not talk about Japanese atrocities then? By the way, how many people were murdered by the Imperial Army? A lot more than those killed by the atomic bombs? Shall I follow your line of thinking then?

    ry2sense:

    TODAY in China

OK, let's stop all movies and serials with historical settings. Tell NHK to stop producing shows like Genji Monogatari and Mito Komon. And stop all these Japanese and American movies set during the last world war.

I noticed the massacre-deniers are out in force clicking the good button whenever a poster is deflecting the attention back to China. Yes, China's recent history is nothing to laugh about, but what the Imperial Army did should not be swept under the carpet.

    netninja:

    I'll watch that movie

I'd like to, but I have a feeling that I'm going to have to either download it, wait for the DVD or watch it abroad (or risk entering the cinema under a hail of bullets). Remember what happened when they tried to show The Cove in Japan? The scumbags even attacked the elderly mother of the cinema owner in her own home.

    proxy:

I will await the Chinese movie about the tens of millions of people killed by the Chinese communists and their cultural revolution.

Me too. But I also await Japan's movies about how the Ainus were nearly wiped out. I guess Japan and China ain't too different from one another. Certain subjects are still taboo here.

It's not just about value for money. From the animals' point of view, the zoos I've been to can be horrendous. If they're cute, like the koala bears, then they can be well-looked after (I guess). But if they're not, like the monkeys, then they'll be pacing up or down, staring into space or not reacting to anything. I've seen this also with lions, birds and even elephants. Concrete floor, one suspending tire and a couple of wooden planks won't cheer up anything. Never been to Ueno Zoo (and never will) but the worst I've been to is the big zoo in Nagoya (can't remember the name). I felt guilty even looking at the monkeys. It's an absolute disgrace. I don't like dolphin shows, either. One of the worse things is that children grow up not realizing how bad the conditions are and are just attracted by the kawaii factor. Adults should know better. Going around blowing at motionless birds in small cages just to get a reaction is pathetic.

Human were originated from some form of creatures who were similar to Chinks or Gorilla.

OK, OK, some racist already wrote the word CHINK the other day. I really didn't bother reading your post after that word because you lose all credibility.

    ironchef:

stop eating red meat? shall we extract our canine teeth while we are at it?! we humans are meant and designed to eat meat.

Yeah, that's why it's so easy for humans to tear apart raw flesh with their teeth.

Without fat and protein? What do think beans, avocados and nuts are made of? Diamonds?

insulin from junk processed foods. meat will not have any negative effects on that.

Junk food usually has meat or is deep-fried, or contains too much sugar, etc. That's got nothing to do with being vegan or not. You're confusing the two (on purpose to justify your own arguments). I'd love to see how you survive on meat only without the veggies and fruit. You're going to be spending ages on the toilet forcing it out. But to each his own.

And taken from your own link:

Many dieticians believe it is possible to bring up a healthy vegan child. "You can do it, but you do have to make sure you know what you are doing, especially in regards to weight,"

I've been vegan for well over 10 years. I'm still alive and kicking. And no, I'm not that skinny. Just slim. I have a medical every year. Low bad cholesterol and high good cholesterol.

Bohemian Rhapsody scared the hell out of me when I was a very young kid hearing it for the very first time. But their songs bring back so many memories - a time when music was real music.

Without the likes of Kim and Ando, the competition does not look that great. The 14-year old Russian who's already qualified might be the one to watch in Quebec. There's no doubt Asada is a top skater (when she's not off), but her choice of music and costumes isn't always the best. In fact the music can sometimes be dark and depressing.
