Xmas to me is a time to be with friends and family and look forward to the new year. Nothing religious about it for me. Jesus, if he existed, probably wasn't even born in the winter. The biggest problem here is having to listen to Mariah Carey's song inside every damn shop, day after day.

There are times when I think that Japan should be allowed to think it did nothing wrong. At the end of the day, this country will be sinking and what it thinks will be insignificant to the rest of the world. The far-right and people like bicultural need something cheerful to help them get through the long long winter that's approaching.

Funny, that! I was just thinking the same about the islands situated right next to Taiwan. Even the former independent kingdom of Ryukyu was ridiculously far from Japan when it was overtaken.

Yes, the Europeans were no saints, I'm sure. But can you please tell me, did they do anything that was more vile and inhumane than experimenting, dissecting and bayoneting people who were still alive, ripping fetuses from women, raping women and girls, subjecting the mass public to diseases on purpose? Distain? Oh please!
I have absolutely nothing against the Japanese of today (with the exception of right-wing scum who refuse, in public, to admit to these LARGE-scale atrocities), but you cannot deny history. You can't deflect attention by saying 'oh, but other nations were a bit naughty too'.

You're 'kidding', right?

You noticed the sort of countries you mentioned? The Japanese do NOT take kindly to being compared with developing nations. They see themselves as part of the developed world (ie western). Sorry, but 50-50 is not good enough. It's like saying you have a 50-50 chance of being involved in a car accident. Being 'centuries ahead' of, say China, in terms of car safety, is NOT saying much. As for cars (which are turning left or right) stopping for pedestrians or cyclists crossing the road when the pedestrian lights are green - now that really is 50-50. I've already crashed into a car - I was already on the crossing and the car was INITIALLY stationary, but still refused to let me cross. And as for cars letting pedestrians cross at crossings without traffic lights - now that is WORSE than 50-50 - absolutely no point in making these crossings - and just as bad as China.

If you've bothered to read some literature (or even watch Day After Tomorrow) , and not just listen to Fox, then you'll know that 'global warming' does not mean every single damn place on this planet gets hotter from the point go. Certain areas may experience colder climates, just as some places can get droughts or floods.

I've seen drivers (eg mothers) who let their children (including babies) sit on their laps while they're driving. Unbelievable! I've seen kids' and dogs' heads sticking out of windows when the cars are doing over 40mph. Not kawaii, but more like abunai! Frankly, I don't care whether these 'adults' kill themselves, but leave everyone else out of it, including the children.

America does a good job of keeping certain British celebrities away from the UK, like Piers Morgan, Sarah Fergusson and the Beckhams. Keep up the good work, America. Britain thanks you!

I'm sometimes surprised at how much 'hand luggage' some passengers manage to get through security check. I've seen people in economy class with one suitcase and loads of other bags.

These lists are absolutely shallow and of little merit to this world. Most of these 'winners' have an inch-thick of make-up to thank. I don't even who this Sasaki is.
Coincidence that these two look alike. Wasn't KK the double of NP in SW?

By the way, this sort of treatment, along with the 10-fingerprint scan has stopped me from going to US. I've had to go for business, and last year to accompany my parents who were visiting a relative. But I now refuse to go there if possible. My mother was livid at the way immigration treated her. I personally have not had very bad experiences, but I've witnessed how some TSA guys would patronize and look down upon foreigners, including the Japanese (ironic, given that half the people working at US airports weren't even born there - I can tell from their accents). Such a shame because I've found that, after leaving the airport, people can be really nice and wonderful. Going there used to be great - until 9/11 came along. There are now other, more welcoming places to visit.

According to many posts here and on other sites, there are lots and lots of cases where teachers DO witness this and yet do F.A.
Nothing will ever get done in Japan. And this doesn't just apply to bullying.

Certainly better than the West. My biggest complaint is the price - the standards, comfort, speed of trains and their frequencies are just as good in HK, Taiwan, China, Singapore and Korea, but these countries manage to offer them at a fraction of the price. High speed rail is expensive in Japan. And trains and stations in HK and Singapore are a lot cleaner than those in Japan, simply because eating and drinking are not allowed. Hell, you can't even bring a durian into the Singaporean subway. If you let people eat, they will. And the result - discarded bottles and packaging on the trains in Japan (as well as puke). I've had ojiisans dropping peanuts all over my feet, schoolgirls eat ramen next to me on my commute, and smell of junk food can be terrible.
They should make sure ALL trains have a list of the stations by the door. I've been on some trains in the Metropolis area which don't have them - probably more concerned about plastering the train with ads for extra revenue.
They can do more to improve it, but all in all, very convenient, with an extensive network, provided you're in the big cities and don't stay out too late. One good thing is that I don't ever remember a price hike in fares - something that happens EVERY year on the London Underground and British Rail.

They would have done that had they not spent the WHOLE of October celebrating Halloween. I am already sick to death of all the Xmas songs and carols. You just cannot avoid them. I'm surprised the Japanese haven't discovered Easter (another biggie for the chocolate industry) and Thanksgiving.

Sarge, have you seen some of the Japanese players - they are TALL! If the smaller players were not effective, the coach would not have chosen them time and time again.
You've used the words Chinese and irked in two consecutive volleyball posts. And I'll say it again, YOU are irked that the Chinese beat the Japanese team. The more you talk about it, the more it becomes obvious. Just sit back and enjoy it all while the good-feel factor lasts....because not all the tournaments can be held in Japan, surely(?)
