Sorry but my local QB hairdressers are under pressure to cut that hair within 10 minutes. No time for idle chit chat.

If they don't charge reikin, they'll come up with other ridiculous charges. Some charge obligatory fumigation charges. I was told that the agents could only charge commission based on one month's fee, maximum. That amount is supposed to be the total amount coming from the customer and the landlord, but some probably end up charging both one month's fee. Certain renovation charges should not be borne by the person renting the place - fusumas and tatami mats deteriorate naturally with time, no matter how clean you keep the place. Plus, a lot of these apts have cheap sinks in the kitchens and they don't stay in good condition for long.

Posted in: In the long run, 'reikin' (gift money) will completely disappear because this is a system that doesn’t make sense. Eliminating the fee will make it easier for tenants to move around.

    nisegaijin:

I did a Hong Kong trip from Haneda and it was very bothersome to get on monorail with suit case and stuff. It was very crowded as it was in the evening.

Also, by the time you come out of HK airport, the trains and buses have stopped running. So unless you're willing to spend money on a taxi (although nowhere as expensive as Japanese taxis), you'll have to stay overnight in the airport, walk or get someone to pick you up.

Well this has all come a bit too late for me. I've moved and now live slightly closer to Narita than Haneda. Haneda only used to be 30mins away by train. Plus, I'm sure Haneda flights will be a bit more expensive. However, I'd still like to visit the new terminal sometime, out of curiosity.

What does he or the translator mean by 'robust', exactly? The reason I don't use soap is because I have eczematic skin and my face would become very taut and dry. I just use a simple facial scrub and then apply simple moisturizer. I don't spend more money than necessary. Never buy the expensive brands. There's a reason why some men end up with leathery looking skin.

Posted in: You might think men who buy skin care products are a bit on the feminine side, but in fact, many of them are quite robust.

I'd like to really know how many don't want to go abroad, not because they have no interest, but because something else is stopping them, eg financial problems, lack of skills, worrying about their return to Japan, etc. I had thought that many university students wanted the chance to go abroad, if only for a year or two, or obtain a degree abroad, but I was then told that most were satisfied with facilities and the educational system here whereas the mainland Chinese went abroad because their universities weren't good enough. I personally don't think that. Besides, for the Chinese, especially those from Hong Kong, educational experience abroad is a big asset and shows employers that you've tried to expand your horizons. Unlike the inflexible system in Japan, many Hong Kong children are able to study abroad and go back with no problems, and that includes high school kids. I know someone whose son went to a local elementary Hong Kong school, then onto a British school in HK, studied A-levels in UK and has been offered a place to study law in good HK and UK universities. (He chose HK because I guess he likes it there). You just can't do all this in the Japanese system.

I also have a Japanese female friend who has lived in HK for several years, working in a Japanese publishing company. I just don't see her returning. I guess she was sick of the Japanese workplace (she had harsh words for one of her ex-companies, a certain phone company) and I think she's able to gain valuable experience. She's likely to get PR before me, even though I've been here longer than she's been in HK. Next stop for her and her boyfriend could be a western country. But not Japan.

I sure hope that he really does retire after his present term in Tokyo. It's very easy to ask someone to do the bombing, but when a war starts, you can bet your nelly he won't be at the front doing the fighting.

I have to agree with Wizz - gender should have nothing to do with it. A murderer is a murderer.

Have I missed something. This coming from a country which doesn't hesitate to stone raped women to death.

I just don't think many people on both sides care about this issue to the point of causing trouble. Most just want to get on with their lives and make money. It's the (very vocal) minority that is causing trouble - those who damaged the Japanese schools in China and those who sent threats to Chinese schools in Japan. These people are absolutely selfish - their actions can affect their countrymen living abroad. China needs to calm down and sit down to discuss this with Japan, and Japan needs to stop bitching when their own fishermen are caught in Russian territory.

By the way, doesn't America benefit from any instability in East Asia?

Posted in: How bad do you think tensions between Japan and China are going to get over the disputed islands? Is Japan's detention of the Chinese fishing boat skipper the proverbial straw that breaks the camel's back?

This makes me feel I made the right decision in getting rid of my TV. I hope the person who bought by TV realizes what Japanese TV is like. The only advantage my TV had was that it wasn't widescreen, so when set at the correct aspect ratio, the window on the corner with the annoying tarento's face doesn't fit into the screen.

I do miss some TV programmes (documentaries in particular) but it's just not worth having the TV. I watch stuff on the computer and I can also buy a TV adapter for it. I also get access to TV on the weekends at friends' homes if I'm desperate, or on my mobile's oneseg.

My number DAIKON YAKUSHA - probably Katori Shingo. His ever-evolving hairstyle is also annoying. I'm sure Japanese TV wasn't always like this. I enjoyed Saiyuki (with Sakai, Nishida et al) when I was a child, but the recent remake with Katori was plain embarrassing.

Summarizing, Japanese TV in general is plain unoriginal, immature, predictable, boring and lacking in substance and anything of importance to society. They say watching TV is a good way to improve one's Japanese, but, boy, have I tried. I've had more fun watching Korean dramas, and their plots can be quite lame.

“Even my regulars don’t come in like they used to,” the female proprietor of a Yokohama eatery complains to the magazine. A wage earner in his 40s tells Flash, “Thanks to the law, I do more of my drinking at home now.”

And there are certain places I don't go to, because I'm sick and tired of breathing in the smoke.

If people were to stop buying animals from pet shops willy-nilly, make sure that they're committed to looking after a fully-grown cat or dog, and have them neutered, lives wouldn't need to be wasted. NEVER BUY ANIMALS FROM PET SHOPS. There are plenty at animal shelters.

It's not just the oyajis. I see young and middle-aged women (OLs in particular). Last time was in Ochanomizu Station. While her colleagues just left her on her own, she tried sleeping on the seats as if they were a bed, then stumbled out of the train when she realized it terminated there, and then sat on the foot of the staircase. Pathetic. Of course, the colleagues thought this was all funny (as is usually the case). Another time, I saw someone fall onto the ground and there was a loud thud as he hit his head. His colleague laughed!

If this was cosplay, I bet there wouldn't be all this hate on this forum.

    Branded:

So when is the 1st annual "Look at me, I have sex with members of the opposite sex" Parade ???

Whenever there comes a day when heterosexuals are targeted because of their sexual orientation and denied basic rights, not allowed to marry whoever they choose, are fired from their jobs, bullied, verbally abused or are executed in certain countries just because they're straight (yes, that's right!), then go ahead, organize your own parade.

Until then, think for a second instead of spewing all that hate. There are some (straight and gay) who may not like to look at these cross-dressers, but there's a basic reason for these parades. More intelligent people will realize that not all gay men act or look like Razor Ramon HD (who is actually straight) or Madonna.

    kaz4r6:

I suggest gay people leave this country for good.

But you're okay with female molesters or male molesters who target girls, right? Next, you're going to say all paedophiles are gay, and never target girls.

    Gurukun:

however. I wouldn't want to be 'picked up' by a gay, marry a gay, etc. I have no problem having normal conversations with a person that is gay, or even going out and having a few beers with one. Just don't want to get involved with anything more than that.

Yes, of course. Sounds like the old white guy who has a few black friends but wouldn't want any of them to marry his daughter.
