So is London really more expensive than Tokyo? At least the London cabbies know the roads. More often than not, I've had to tell the Japanese drivers where to go. And still the ride costs an arm and a leg. Hong Kong and China are pretty cheap and they know the roads, but the latter may involve a car crash.

Norika Fujiwara is a tarento, not an actress. In fact the only big movie she was in was a Hong Kong movie, I believe. She does voice-overs though, just like Becky.

Subtitles too! It doesn't matter what language it is, something's lost when it's dubbed. Also, I don't appreciate it when foreign movies and TV programmes are dubbed into Japanese - men's voices go down one octave and women's voices go up two octaves. Fully grown women end up sounding like 10 year olds. And the Japanese voice actors get higher billing than the original actors.

Dubbed cartoons for 5 year old kids is fine though, I guess.

Great article. Someone with her head screwed on the right way and the guts to tell it as it is.

    skipbeat:

I didn't like the movie,“Memoirs of a Geisha,” because there were no Japanese actresses. It was hard to take the movie seriously. Since the movie is base on Japan and Japanese culture then at least have the Japanese actresses

I guess you'd better not watch the Japanese stage version of The Sound of Music. Not only are none of the actors European, but they're the wrong skin colour to boot! You must have hated Nicole Kidman's portrayal of an American, Russian and Brit. Don't forget Angelina Jolie - she's played a Brit and Russian too. Oh, and John Cho played Hikaru Sulu (doesn't Hikaru sound Japanese?)

The point is, actors are actors because they take on the roles of someone completely different. Memoirs of a Geisha was a Hollywood movie, first and foremost - the dialogue was in English and the need for big, recognizable stars forced them to go for the non-Japanese actors. Yes, I would like to have seen Japanese actors but there weren't any that fit the prerequisites. Get over it!

By the way, you may not want to watch Caterpillar. I hear the Chinese characters are portrayed by Japanese.

you really have no idea don't you!?! I recommend you the movie "Our daily bread" (in Japanese "命の食べ方"). I admit I had no idea myself but this was an eye opener. 99% of the beef reaching the consumer's plates never sees any pasture and green grass...

Did you actually read what I wrote??? I said IF. IF! I'm well aware of how most food animals are kept. If you'd read everything I wrote, you'd have known I just mentioned factory farming. I didn't become a vegetarian because I thought it was cool to have something in common with Pamela Anderson. And why are you so worried about cows never seeing any pasture?

Also if you would have to choose between a punch in you face once or twice a year or getting "humanely" killed in an instant what would you choose?

So are you saying that if you whack your pet dog in the face with a plank of wood, you'd get away with it by saying that other dogs suffer a life of misery in the hands of abusers? What you're trying to do is justify bullfighting and other forms of 'entertainment' by saying that other animals are treated worse. Sorry, but that sort of argument just doesn't wash with me.

I suggest you read people's posts properly.

you really have no idea don't you!?!

    ...and write properly!!!

Good on the Catalans for getting rid of cruel and pointless games for human pleasure. So what if bulls do this in nature? If they do do it, then they'll do it in their own time and in their own place. I have no sympathy for people involved in these affairs and who are gored by the bulls.

    ebisen:

it is far less cruel than killing and eating them

So you're telling me if cows or bulls are left to graze on the pastures for the whole of their lives and are then killed in a split second, this would be more cruel than day-in-day-out bullfighting? No, I don't agree with factory farming either, but then again, I'm vegetarian.

For god's sake, quit whining! If you want bigger photos of half naked women or even naked women, just go to other websites. The internet is full of them.

I actually went there twice. First time, there were very few people but the flower wasn't open yet. This was before it appeared on the TV news. Went there again on Saturday morning, and though it was crowded, once in, we only had to wait 10 minutes. After leaving, I heard that there was more than a 2-hour wait. Mind you, I arrived 30 minutes before opening time, at 6:30am! I'm just glad the condominium I was staying at was only a 15-minute walk from the garden.

And it's not just the flower. The garden is pretty large, and at 300 yen, was well worth it. There's a lovely Japanese garden inside. Got to see giant tadpoles. After that, took a bus to another garden, Rikugien (this time it was nearly empty, probably because of the heat). A very very hot day, but we enjoyed ourselves.

By the way, it didn't smell. I was told it smelled during the night. The flower never really reached its full potential. I read somewhere that there's one now in Houston which looks like Groucho Marx!

Men should cover there arms and legs, wear collars and clothes not too tight.

When it's hot and humid, very very few people want to cover themselves up completely. If you've got fat pale hairy legs or anorexic legs then cover yourself up, but not everyone has those type of legs.

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing. That's no jogger. That's a serious runner.

OK, Gebrselassie, just how fast does a jogger need to run before becoming a runner?

Nitpicking aside, for those who are fit enough to jog or run in hot weather, I'd say skin protection from the sun is also important. If I, for some reason, had to run in that sort of weather, I would not hesitate to wear a light tracksuit, long sleeves and a cap, despite what posters like marcel think. Though I don't really burn in the sun (I go brown very very quickly), I don't feel comfortable when the summer sun is shining directly on me (goes back to my younger days when I suffered badly from hay fever and eczema).

Went jogging round the Imperial Palace today at 6pm. I'd hate to think how much more exhausting it would have been in the early afternoon. I was out and about in town at 6.30am today and it was already fairly hot.

Does anyone know where exactly the photo was taken?

Cheap chappatsu and kinpatsu - UGLY UGLY UGLY!

Pointy Aladdin shoes, wallets hanging out of the back pockets begging to be stolen, skinny tight jeans, long wavy light brown hair (see above) - GROSS GROSS GROSS!

Yes, clothes and bags with Engrish - PLAIN EMBARRASSING

Schoolboy shoes that have been dragged and used as slippers - ANNOYING

I'd like to see more men and women with shorter hairstyles. The 'Rod Stewart with leathery skin and suits' look is cheap and nasty.

    Geez,this is a doctor Japan,what do you expect ??

guarantee you 99% of doctors in Japan or anywhere else for that matter do not do this. the 1% of sick hentai do not represent a whole race

It's not the doctors in Japan. Most are not criminals. That's not the problem as such. It's the way Japanese society works - it allows these criminal scum to carry on working even after after they've been arrested before.

I'd like to hear how you and posters like bicultural are going to defend the stupid way things work here in Japan. These proud posters are always on the offensive when any criticism appears on JT, and yet there's a lack of criticism of the 'Japanese way of of doing things' when criminals like these and child murderers are given light sentences.

Never understood over here why people still continue to live at home when you come of age.

Perhaps you are not too familiar with African, Asian and, in general, non-western cultures, where it's not so strange to find generations living together, where the older folks aren't usually left to rot by themselves either in nursing homes or alone in their own homes. If you couldn't wait to leave your parents' home, then perhaps there was something wrong in your household. Until she died, my grandmother lived with us and I wouldn't have had it any other way. My sister is a very independent woman and yet she didn't move out until she was in her mid-twenties. Same for me. She worked and helped with the bills. I was a postgraduate student, and I now help them out financially. As long as the grown up children help out financially (if they're working and are not students), and can think for themselves, then I see nothing wrong. Of course I'm not saying there aren't lazy folks, but not all of those living with their parents are parasites.

Both I and my sister no longer live with our parents. Neither of us will get married, but that doesn't mean we're single, spoilt, lazy or dependent on others.

Posted in: One reason for the declining marriage rate is the prevalence of so-called parasite singles, or people who prefer to remain unwed and live at home with their parents during the current economic climate.

Where I'm from, a Japanese only needs live there for 2 years to get PR and - I think - the right to vote. Lucky for some but not for others.

Which is why I would like to see my own country make it more difficult for Japanese to get PR, along with fingerprinting Japanese, Koreans and Americans (only) at the airport. My country does allow certain foreigners (not necessarily PR, I think) to vote in local elections, but I hope it doesn't include Japanese PR (though Korean PRs would be welcome). It's just not right when these sort of things are not reciprocated.

How many countries let tourists vote in local elections?

I hardly call foreigners who have lived here for decades "tourists". Otherwise, that's one hell of a visa they've got.,
