and the girls are gorgeous and talkative.

How come nobody complains that waiters and not waitresses serve customers in restaurants? I don't care about the attendants' age, gender, face or body. When an accident happens, as monkey says, and heavy things likes doors and wreckage need to be moved, a talkative waif ain't gonna be of much use. I bet half the people who complain about the 'look' of the attendants are baldie fat oldies themselves. Sometimes, it's not the staff who put me off, but the passengers.

As for my favourites, I like Cathay. Good service and good food. I once had to be put onto a CX flight in the Middle East as I think my Gulf air flight was full. I asked for vegetarian food just before boarding and there was absolutely no problems. Compare with Thai - I confirmed my special meal THREE times, as still they had no record of it at check-in. Never again.

The Chinese airlines (be they mainland or Taiwan are ok. Those who complain should really have travelled with them 20 years ago - they have improved A LOT!). I travel with ANA a lot (but I always use my Virgin mileage card as there's no expiry date if I use it once every 2 years, unlike ANA). Biggest complaint about ANA - the seats are too small and they've stopped giving any sort of freebie snacks). But service is always good. I don't remember any bad service from JAL but they're just a bit too pricey sometimes.

Go to Kanagawa, NO Smoking in eateries.

That's what I thought, and indeed, my local McDonald's is smoke-free. However, the KFC has seats for both smokers and non-smokers, but the partition is so useless, a baby could walk right through it and still wouldn't hit its head on the partition. And yes, I could smell the smoke.

    Are they joking...?

It should be a hand book of where non-smokers can find a place to not have someone blowing smoke in their face...

The title of the book makes it sound as if there are only a small number of restaurants where one can smoke. In fact, I'd say restaurants where you can eat without the threat of tobacco smell are in the minority.

Kamei is a dinosaur of Japanese politics with way too much influence.

He does himself no favours by singing in public.

    You go, gal!

Many a times I've seen people sitting in those seats on the train while those who needed the seats were left standing. The signs say the seats are for the physically handicapped, the elderly, expectant mothers and those carrying children. They should also add selfish idiots.

    Bogi:

I can understand this notion, but what surname will the children take? Both? What happens when 2 people who have hyphenated surnames marry and have a child? Will the child have four surnames?

I respect the freedom to choose but I like the traditional way.

Spanish speakers aren't losing any sleep over your dilemma. Ask them what they do.

I don't think we need to worry about folks like Kamei. The advantage is that they're old and will be carted off to the nursing home soon.

    'medokusai'.

sorry, spelling mistake. Should be 'mendokusai' めんどくさい, just in case bicultural starts nitpicking again.

I personally think having more foreigners involved in the government process in Japan would be very beneficial for everyone - we generally raise questions and want answers

That's exactly why many Jp don't want foreigners involved. The Jp authorities doesn't like to be questioned.

    cnc:

why is everyone so self absorbed that they are forgetting to look at the picture in the long-run. Say if both partners keep their names (out of selfishness), what will happen to the children? What will you call them? And all documentation in Japan does not make it easy for hyphenated surnames. Furthermore will not this issue contribute to breaking up of marriages!!

Do you see places like Korea, China and HK worse off than Japan? These countries certainly don't find it 'medokusai'.

Solution - don't drive or cycle in Japan. When crossing the roads, make sure cars and bikes stop first regardless of whether the the lights are red or not. If there are no lights at the zebra crossing, definitely wait till they stop because more often than not drivers won't stop (which begs the questions, wtf are crossings for?)

Used to shower and bathe, but that's a serious waste of water and energy

I bet that's what most sarariman say too. I'm so glad my trains are not that crowded.

When they showed him saying 'lemme in', the kept on translating it as 'let me eat'. Anyway, I'm puzzled as to why he wasn't kept in prison for about 20 days. That's how it works in Japan.

MuckDonalds, Bugger King or Kentucky Fried Cruelty. Doesn't matter what you call them, they're still greasy junk food.

I'm intrigued. Where did you buy your margarine? There's not a single one I like in the supermarkets. The only one I was willing to buy was available in a vegetarian restaurant somewhere near Shinjuku. Same here - my other half eats all the veggie stuff I make (haven't tried pies yet, but will do), but cannot be half-arsed to make them.

what per centage of vegetarians do NOT eat fish,

    100%.

Actually, reading this article has made me try and make some sort of vegan pastry myself without all the trans-fat crap and lard you see in the Japanese supermarkets. I found some recipes on the internet. My motto is - if you can't find it in the shops, try doing it yourself. I've done vegan shepherd's pie, roasts, pizzas, even tiramisu.

My partner does all the delivering; he used to be a garbage truck driver and he knows all the roads.

I hope he's not using the same truck to deliver the pies.

Finally... Now how long until they can get rid of Narita.

You do realize that for many living in East Tokyo, Saitama and Chiba, Narita is much more convenient? And that the new rail link from Ueno and Nippori will get you there very quickly?
