I wonder if the lack of comments here is related to the fact that the comments regarding the Okada's prediction that the Samurai Blues would reach the semis were overwhelmingly negative. Lost your tongues have you:-)?

I still don't think they'll get to the semi finals but that's just my opinion. Even if they somehow get past Paraguay, they will then have to play Spain or Portugal.

There is a cultural psychological theory that the Vuvuzela are an advantage for Asian Teams.

I guess there were no vuvuzelas yesterday then.

Because they played rubbish in their friendlies. Based on those performances, nobody could say they were definitely going to do well.

Could it be the way the Japanese media deifies them just annoys people? I know thats why I don't like them.

Me too. I actually quite like people like Matsui Hideki, because they're not so arrogant and seem easy-going, but when the media shows Japanese players only on the TV, and cameras switch off when they're not around, it really is annoying. And when the media makes stupid excuses or starts bragging about so-and-so and keeps asking foreigners what they think of this Jp person or that Jp person, I just switch the TV off.
And yes, give the hair bleach a rest.

    Two stories from me:

An English newspaper once had an ad for Chinese or Japanese tea. There were Chinese characters, but they were upside-down. Jesus! Needless to say, it was a tabloid.

I once saw a Japanese obaasan wearing a T-shirt with the words JUICY written on the chest. Oh dear.

Didn't see the match (I'm not going to wake up at 3am, no matter what country or sports event it is), but never expected this score. I thought Japan had a chance but not like this!!! Why on earth couldn't they play like this before? Better late than never. I don't know much about Paraguay, but I'm not going to make any bets. It's great to see several of the non-European/South American teams go through. We have Ghana (who unfortunately will have to play USA), South Korea and Japan. Any chance of Ivory Coast going through. Shame NZ didn't make it, despite not losing any matches.

I wonder whether Okada will be welcome back as a hero, after all the flak he got before.

Also, I just don't think it's right to criticize those who thought Japan wouldn't make it to the knock-out stage. They did awful in the friendlies, and you just can't say 'Oh they'll do well when the WC starts'.

Well done. And good riddance to those who didn't want to win or those who thought acting was part of the game.

i stand by my prediction -- japan all the way!

Now that's taking it too far.

Marry a Japanese person. Then at least your kids can have the option of voting in Japan.

That has got to be one of the most insane comments (amongst others posted by you). I have a Jp partner and we're together because we love each other, not because I wanted any future offspring to get the vote. No wonder so many international marriages end in divorce if this is the reason to get married. A few weeks back, you also said foreigners here should 'be Japanese'. Short of a caucasian painting his face yellow, how can you 'be Japanese'? Naturalizing sure won't end the discrimination - just ask Arudou. Although he can vote (yippee!)

Oh, I just realized fishy said the same thing.

    Nihonryu:

What on earth would a 2nd or 3rd generation Korean or Chinese born and raised in Japan only speaking Japanese want or need to retain a S.Korea, N.Korean, Taiwanese passport?

I think your bringing up the examples of Asian Americans (and might I add Asian Europeans) actually answers your own question. In N America and W Europe, Asians (right from the first generation) can be 100% of society and be regarded as citizens. They don't need to change their surnames to fit in society and if they come against any discrimination, the law will come on those racists like a tonne of bricks. They can also be proud of their heritage without any backlash, be they African Americans, Chinese British, Japanese Canadians, Vietnamese French, etc. Koreans in Japan, I would say, aren't in the same situation. They still face discrimination, and so either naturalize and hope people don't know they're ethnic Koreans or stay completely within the Korean community and get support from them. Of course things are changing slowly now, but when was the last time people like Wada Akiko (also known as Kim Bokcha) talk about their heritage? However, I am glad to see more and more naturalized Japanese who have kept their Korean surnames (there's a footballer and the boss of Softbank?)

I don't know why some people (right-wingers and certain politicians) are making such a big deal - I was always under the impression that voting was only ever going to be given to special PR - not just any PR.

First, these are local elections - we're not voting for the government.

Second, the only 'Chinese' who are special PR are those whose ancestors came from Taiwan.

Third, you can't vote for a foreigner, only for a Japanese (but then again, some politicians like Renho, have dirty foreign blood).

Fourth, shouldn't those against giving the vote urge all Japanese living abroad who are eligible to vote in their adopted country not to vote? Nobody so far has criticized civilized countries from giving some foreigners the right to vote in local elections.

Personally, vote or no vote, I will never relinquish my citizenship to gain Japanese citizenship. You'll never be treated as 'one of them' (again I quote Renho), you'll lose your old nationality, and need I mention the future of Japan? I feel sorry for those who are stuck here.

Finally a team that was able to put on a good show for the viewers.

Oh puleez, that was like watching someone stealing candy from a baby. Portugal gets to get 3 points and a lot of practice, but a real good show would involve 2 top teams, not one top team and the lowest ranked team that only qualified because Asian competition is weak. This is like Japan bragging about a win over Hong Kong.

You should learn how to spell before posting here. This is not the first time you've done this and I have no idea why your posts haven't been deleted. The correct spelling should be 'qorean'.

    BurakuminDes:

That's not cool, moshino. Don't laugh at them - they all tried their hearts out. I actually fear for their safety at the hands of their sadist "Dear Leader"...

One Nigerian footballer has already received a lot of death threats. Wasn't a Colombian player killed as soon as he stepped back on home soil? And it's well known that Saddam Hussein's son used to torture Iraqi players who played badly. I agree - it's not funny in certain cases.

1-0 against a second-rate team is nothing to brag about. They're not going to go far if they don't improve.

Game over. It was a good goal from Holland, but I really wasn't impressed by them that much, considering they're supposed to be one of the better teams. If Denmark doesn't do that much better, I see Japan capable of going through to the next round. I was surprised at how many chances Japan had in that match.

Come on, give them some credit. Finally, a Japanese company doing something for the less fortunate. Charity is quite rare when it comes to Japanese companies. When was the last you heard of a Jp company organizing a charity event?

8,500 yen to Hawaii and India, and around 6,500 yen to the rest of Asia.

Does this mean that if I fly to Korea from western Japan, I still have to pay 8,500 yen? That's 50% of the basic fare!

Agree with Sarge - I'll pass. Let these company go more into the red. This is just another excuse to rip-off customers.
