As the full article said, there is more openness in China when it comes to access for journalists at press conferences, and THAT'S saying a lot. No wonder many just can't be bothered with Japan anymore.

I found this article a bit strange. It started off talking about factory farming and animal welfare, and then the rest was about traceability. Frankly, I'm also worried about how animals are treated here. I've seen Japanese farmers on TV proud of their battery hens, and cows and pigs behind bars, in small confined spaces. I'd think many people in places like UK would be too embarrassed to brag about this. It would be nice if there were more info about this as well as traceability, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Another one of those 'I love you Japan. Watch my movie' press conferences?

Of course, they shouldn't do this just because America wants them to. They should do it because they want to. Just in the same way that they should not let in skilled workers or migrants just to make themselves look 'internationalized' and give themselves a pat on the back. Do things only when you mean it instead of being two-faced.

However, I just love it when a country gets a taste of their own bitter medicine. Apologies to the individual victims, but I have no sympathy for this country and selfish society as a whole.

As others have said, it's not always the mothers that get custody. Fathers get custody too, if they're the Japanese spouse of if they are influential (eg Koizumi). There are probably lots of other parents who have lost their children, but because they're Chinese or Filipino or Thai, etc, they don't get any airtime. How about these people? Are they worth less than westerners?

What's the big deal with being "internationalized"?

I don't know. You tell me. Or better still, can the Japanese tell me, since they're the ones who are always trying to give off this image of being from an international place. All words, but no action. We want skilled people to come to our country (pay into our pension fund and then p*ss off afterwards). We want nurses from around the world (and we then want them to leave). We want Brazilians (and we all know what happened to them). We want tourists from the west (as long as they give us their fingerprints). Blah blah blah.

I've asked this before a long time ago but never got an answer. Adults (like Americans), how can they keep both their original and Japanese passports? No matter which country they visit, Japanese passport holders will get a stamp in their passport. When they come back to Japan, what happens if the immigration officer asks you where the stamp is? They can't take away your American passport, but they can take away you Japanese citizenship.

    BurakuminDes:

Me too. As much as I like this place and my Japanese partner, I would NEVER trade in my passport for a Japanese one. You'll always be treated as an outsider. Plus, as a foreigner I have the luxury of leaving Japan permanently anytime when the going gets tough. Most Japanese can't do that. They're stuck with this country.

    Agree with the first poster.

Not only online, but some printed papers are also free. In London, The Standard is now free and you can get it at many tube stations. For Hong Kong news, I gave up on The South China Morning Post when they started charging. It's competitor, oddly enough, also called The Standard, is absolutely free.

Where's Renho? According to Hiranuma, she wasn't Japanese originally either.

I don't get it. I know Kamei has always had a wide face, but recently, he's become to resemble a bean bag. Has he got some sort of ailment? And why has he got a girl's name?

I'd like to see how far a foreigner in Japan would get away with this. Japanese, charming, respectful - yes. Foreigner - PAY NOW before setting foot in your room.

The quality this time of year is, frankly, the same as that at anytime of the year. See post above.

Just as bad as the crowds in city centres around the world waiting the end of year countdown. Sorry, but I don't like crowds in ANY country.

Good on her, but why aren't more ugly singers popular? Why do people keep buying records from people who have no talent, can't sing and have plastic faces like Hamasaki, etc. This is all just a fad. Advice to Boyle: milk it for all it's worth - you deserve it.

Although a better singer than Madonna, I still prefer Madonna's version of You'll See.

I don't know what advice to give. If he were a golf player, you could hit him with a golf club until he's blue in the face. What about here? Throw kabuki make-up in his face?

Yokohama's is the cleanest Chinatown I've been there, but had the worst food and worst shops. It's the most touristy, too.

The decision took me by surprise and I’m concerned,” Bishop Juan Carlos, of the southern city Rio Gallegos, told the Argentine news agency DyN.

    Should be phrased:

The fact that there are other people who have other beliefs and do not think the sun goes round the earth took me by surprise and I'm concerned.

Not only in China! Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia have death penalty for punishing for drug trafficking. Singapore and Malaysia adopted the British common law. However they are not soft on drug smugglers like their old master. Their uniform voice is " Do not mess with us".

I'm not surprised the SE Asians and Chinese take a tough stance on drugs, considering what the British did with opium in China in the good old days.
