With the introduction of this new identity card and the abolishment of the re-entry permit, does it mean that permanent residents can only leave Japan for a maximum of one year? I'm assuming that, at present, PRs could leave and not return until their re-entry permit nears expiration date, which, at present, is 3 years.
I've always wondered what the advantage of automatic gates was, apart from saving time in the very rare case that re-entry lines were long. With these gates, you still have to submit to a face scan. They already have our details, automatic gates or not. I think it's strange that only USA and it's two satellite Asian nations do this crap. When will EU have the balls to do the same to these nations? I have PR in another country and, as such, I'm treated in exactly the same way as the locals at immigration. We can also use automatic gates and you don't even have contact with an immigration officer (who is just sitting there in the background). Isn't that the point of automatic gates - you do everything yourself?
The authorities need to make sure these automatic gates work properly. They're not everywhere in Narita either. The last time I used them, which was for both Jp and non-Jp, it wouldn't work properly despite my having used them before. The Jp woman behind me, who was then having a major hissy fit, went through no problems. Now the gates are even racist!

I guess he has to say that, but that tarento Matsuoka drives me nuts. I still recall his idiotic dance when he won a match at Wimbledon. Embarrassing.

Still ain't gonna eat it. I prefer foreign rice (for taste and safety). There are better ways to support the community than eat contaminated food.

That's what I was thinking, since I actually live in one of these hotspots. Some concerned soul did a survey with a counter and drove round my town. Readings varied from 0.2 to, briefly, 0.5 microsevierts/hr. It was 0.7 the first day it rained after the earthquake. Should the authorities or some company mass produce the counters so that citizens can buy them at an affordable price? I see the cheapest ones on Amazon at around 20,000 yen, going up to 50,000 yen. Most are made in China and Russia.
YongYang:
I think this is a surprise, not because there was a hotspot, but because of the reading, 2.7.
Japangyaru:
How much did yours cost?
Darren B:
I've seen those maps on MEXT's homepage. Do you know whether they intend to do the same for Shizuoka? Not that I live there, but I'd be interested to see the readings considering that Shizuoka tea and mushrooms were contaminated.

Which ones? The ones that made it back from Iraq/Afghanistan or the ones who were killed while thinking there were weapons which never existed?

One word for the chef - idiot! I've carried knives once or twice before, but I always make sure they're either covered in several layers of newspapers or in their original packaging. Sure this was a freak accident, but any one with common sense knows you should have them wrapped securely.
cl400: You can't wrap a car or put car in a box and drive, so your analogy is ridiculous. This isn't chef bashing, rather idiot bashing. And is he going to be arrested and thrown in jail? Recall not long ago, an elderly American guy who came to visit his son in Japan was asking for directions at a koban. When asked whether he had a knife (why on earth they would suddenly ask?!), he said he had a small penknife (or something like that. Result? He was thrown in the cell, his son wasn't informed until at least a day had passed, and he was only allowed to talk to his son in Japanese (despite the fact that he doesn't even know a damn word).

As someone who is living in one of these hotspots, I'm totally mad at the way authorities are handling the situation and even madder at the people who were responsible for doing nothing to make sure that plants were safe from tsunamis. Readings are available for my place, but you have to go on the net to find them - and the readings are just as high as some places in Fukushima. However, why are the readings not made more public? I can't find them in newspapers. And Japan Times showing readings from one city per prefecture is absolutely useless for people not living in those cities. In the Kanto region, there is absolutely no correlation between readings and distance from the Fukushima plant. It was just pot luck that rain dumped a whole load of cesium onto certain areas. I found high readings dating back to the day it first rained after the leak, but it certainly wasn't publicized much at the time. Most people were more worried about the water. I guess it was wise, after all, to cover myself as much as possible and wear a mask when going out.
And why are the Japanese so obsessed with burning things? Radiation or no radiation, am I the only one bothered by breathing in god knows what? I've seen farmers burn plastic bags, and idiotic neighbors burn garden waste (for god's sake, just put it in a bag and have it collected like normal garbage).

Your ignorance is absolutely beyond belief! Just because isolated incidents are reported, you seem to think the whole country is into child cage fighting. Can you please stop your blatant racism and ignorance at other countries like UK and China and concentrate on problems in your won country. There, people are getting shot at, chopped up and mutilated. Now that is one hell hole. At least the UK is doing something. A two yen hike in the price of ONE cigarette will do F.A.!

And that is exactly why some crashes have occurred in the past - the fear of coming into the platform one minute later than scheduled and the need to speed up to make up for lost time.
Just be thankful nobody got killed this time. What next?

I noticed that question wasn't answered properly. Let's rephrase the question. How would the rates compare if I ordered an item which Amazon (or the company in question) is willing to send to Japan?
I have ordered items before from the States, and if you order large quantities, there is a risk that Japanese customs will slap a tax on it. I once also ordered a particular brand of running shoes which is more expensive in Japan (even when postage from USA is included) - I notice that the company I ordered from no longer send to Japan. What is it with international companies - they're hellbent on making sure Japanese customers have to pay more for the same.
Any case, if this company can provide a good service at reasonable prices, then good luck. I'd be interested, depending on how much they charge.
