Just when we have news that Koyuki and Matsuyama are expecting a baby about 9 months after their wedding, here we have the usual 'accidently try for a baby and then hurry and get married' Japanese couple. Seriously, if you're going to get married, can't you wait till after the wedding. If you don't plan on having kids before hand, then use a condom. It's never a good start when you have to 'force' yourself into a marriage. Sorry, but I agree with Maria. Is it because the child will be fatherless in the eyes of the law? Some stupid law or some stupid people?

Not everyone lives in the big cities. And how much, may I ask, are you paying for these bread? Back home, I can get these at any supermarket for less than 100 yen.
john:
Yeah, and I can tell you, by the time they've reached the mainland, they're nothing like 200 yen!
What, brown basmati? Apart from ten-don and things like norimaki, I just don't want to eat Japanese rice. I can order white basmati from the Indian shops, but they'd be a helluva lot cheaper if the Japanese government didn't impose a ridiculous amount of tax.
Yeah, and go bankrupt at the same time.

They married on April Fool's Day, so they probably planned for a baby right after the wedding. How refreshing to see a Japanese couple (and a famous one at that) try for a BB after marriage. Not that I'm against unmarried couples having BBs, but marrying just because you're expecting is never a great start.

I don't think they have any intention of staying here. I'd say South Korea is where they want to go.

GOOD breads?????!!!! We are talking about Japan? Unless you have access to a good bakery (which I don't) and are willing to fork out a fortune, you have to suffer with the typical gross bread from the supermarkets. The ironic thing is that these 'bread' are cheap (in quality) but not cheap (in price).
I just don't understand why the Japanese hate brown (or foreign) rice, brown bread, brown pasta. Lack of fiber and lack of crunchy or hard stuff is not going to do your body or jaw muscles any favor.
Lack of imaginative vegetarian food. And why do they always assume that bake beans MUST have sausages? I miss the variety of fruits, especially Indian mangoes and SE Asian fruits, except durian. Once bought a bag of 3 mangosteens at Laqua Seijo Ishii for 300 yen!!! Went back the following week, and they were selling 2 for 600 yen!!! No thank you.
As some have said, you can find a lot of the stuff posters have mentioned...but you've got to be willing to travel to buy them and pay a lot. I'd be over the moon if they had Whole Foods in Japan (reasonably priced of course). The locals have absolutely NO concept of what a health store is (it's not a shop which sells only vitamin pills and diet teas).
And why not try make desserts yourself? I made a lovely vegan rice pudding, Indian kheer style. Did a great vegan tiramisu last year. Perhaps trifle later.
Finally, what I really miss, since 3/11, is to be able to buy anything without having to worry about radiation.

I feel sorry for them, but let's face it - dealing with the radiation problem and an economy going down the drains may be a little bit more important.

Does anyone else see the irony in all this? So you want to have your cake and eat it too!
Why? Just because Germany has realized how evil its government was during the war and has, since then, taught the truth to its children? Because it now gets on really well with its neighbors? Is it any coincidence that Japan cannot get on with one single neighbor?

Please provide me with the Chinese transcript that says this.
I'm sure your country has been a model for all others. By the way, what happened to all the native Americans in your country? I think the words force and brutality might come in there somewhere. And this is on top of all the brutal murders happening there now.

That reminds me. The salads available here in Japanese supermarkets are absolutely boring - no imagination. 300 yen for a box of salad (most of it shredded cabbage). M&S does appetizing salads, as does many supermarkets in US and UK. Absolutely FA for vegetarians too.
The ironic thing is I don't really go to Tesco's when I'm in the UK. It's when you're in Japan, you realize just how better the UK supermarkets are in terms of choice and price.
I think Tesco's have done the right thing (for themselves) by leaving. There's much more to be made in countries like China. It's a catch-22 situation here - if you want to branch into Japan, you need to act like the others and offer the same thing, nothing too foreign, otherwise the Japanese shoppers won't come. And yet, if you do that, what's the point of opening up here.
One more thing, not that Tesco's here helped, but the bread available in Japanese supermarkets is atrocious. No granary, no brown bread. Just sweet white marshmallow (expensive too)
Posted in: Tesco failed to imprint itself on this fragmented, hyper-crowded and competitive consumer market. Japan's notoriously conservative and fussy shoppers simply had too many other choices.

Whenever I walk into Japanese supermarkets, I find anything but choice. I get bored of the same fruit and vegetables. What happened to the lovely South Asian mangoes or the South-Asian fruits? Does everything have to be so expensive? Why are all the cucumbers from Fukushima? Why are all the peaches either from Fukushima or nearby?
The Tesco's I used to go to was small but had a nice selection of British cookies and biscuits - ie cookies without all that trans-fat. Looking for Japanese cookies without shortening is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Gonna miss my Borbon biscuits. For only 150 yen, they also used to sell large packets of brown pasta, containing something which the Japanese seem to be averse to - fiber! And they also used to have large discounts on selected drinks. Their selection was small, but it still made a difference. To be honest, I found the Tesco's in Shanghai to have more choice than the average Japanese supermarket.

This is what I feel too. Suddenly, this year, there seems to be so many fruit and vegetables from Fukushima. Peaches, cucumbers, etc. It's as if they're forcing us to eat them. Well, I haven't bought anything from that place and I'm trying to avoid stuff grown in Kanto, as much as I can. Japanese rice is not much of a problem - I simply don't like the stuff in the first place.

I suppose the Jamaicans and Brits were trying to get ahead at any costs too when they tried to get a head start! Again, where is your country?
