I worked as a contract english teacher for a city hall. The oyaji sat around once talking about my "yasui" pay and chuckling. They were pulling in over 1000 man yen per year in a rather rural city near Osaka. On the other hand I kind of feel sorry for them. I have never seen such a boring or uninspiring job. There is no motivation of any kind to overachieve. The maximum that can be expected is that one somehow stumbles upon an idea for a new project to keep him and his subordinates busy enough to keep the mind rot at bay. Hell on earth if you are a whippersnapper.

I hope the US doesn't have a Fukushima incident. I understand most/all of our reactors are going past their 40 year life spam.

My first summer in Japan I had no AC, my school had no AC, I had AC when I went to a conbini or to a restaurant for lunch. I sweated my behind off, and used an electric fan blowing directly on me all night long. But I did not die. Also, lived in East Coast US in college and never had AC in summers. It was sinfully hot and humid. Also, I did not die.

As we say in Americano, this is buwlshit. My sister in law near Kobe works 3 days a week and had no problem getting a part time job. I live in Tokyo with my family and there are signs for part-time help EVERYWHERE screaming about flexible hours and decent pay ot 900-1100/hour even at fast food joints. I think the article is more a reflection of the collapse of Japan's rural economy.

Actually in Japan it is better to get married, even briefly, before the child is born, otherwise the kid's family register will list him/her as illegitimate for perpetuity.

Lucky for her it is in America where police will take her seriously and enforce a restraining order.

I think the reason to marry is for the child. If the mother is not married at birth, the child according to my understanding, will have a family register as a b#st#rd child perpetually. And in this society that ain't good.

I thought old people were burdened with leaving the world a better, safer place for their grandchildren, not inviting war and confrontation for their grandkids to endure based on some notion of pride equals power.

Anyways, top management talent, i.e., the kind that can make millions in NY, London, Paris or even Buenos Aires, don't want to live in Japan anyways. Just gonna get second rate so might as well stick to top JP talent.

My wife had our first one when she was 23 and bounced back like a kangaroo, second one at 33 and bit slower but not bad. Now third one late thirties and pretty tough on her constitution based on the complaining I hear. Setting that aside, my first son definitely is lucky to have a lot more time with grandparents when they were relatively young and genki. That is something that a lot of people forget. If you have kids in your 40s, then most likely your parents are too old to help or enjoy.

Man that sucks. I don't get the impression the police take DV seriously and a person would probably lose confidence to go back to the police based on their attitude. Sad way to die and predictable.

Based on the last sentence of the article, I imagine most people quit for the money. No bonus could mean a 40% pay cut.

I don't know if they broke any laws, but the real malfeasance from what I understand is the guys who planned the reactor without taking into account tsunami, and the guys who were supposed to maintain the emergency generator that failed from the start. Anyone who works in Japan knows that 99% of the workers are just robots and really can't be blamed for acting as programmed.
