"American political office by and large have been filled by people like Helms."

    LOL. The ignorance here astounds.

"I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war was largely about oil."

"The quote ran round the world. Blood for oil--it seemed as if Greenspan was lining up with ANSWER and Michael Moore. In an interview with Bob Woodward, Greenspan tacked a bit: Ensuring the stability of oil supplies was "not the administration's motive" for the Iraq War, but it "would have been my motive." "Taking Saddam out," he added, "was essential." In Greenspan's defense, protecting the world's most important product from a megalomaniac is reason enough to fight. But there were others, repeatedly stressed by the president and Congress, including Saddam's fondness for tyranny, terrorists, and WMD. Meanwhile, we are saddened to acknowledge what everyone should know: Iraq coverage is largely about spin."

    Amazing.

BAGHDAD (AFP) - More than 1,200 US troops serving in Iraq signed up for extended service in the military to mark America’s national day on Friday.

At least 1,215 troops re-enlisted for periods ranging from two to six years at the ceremony held at the spacious Al-Faw palace of executed dictator Saddam Hussein near Baghdad airport.

General David Petraeus, the head of US-led coalition forces in Iraq, said he was “proud of their decision to re-enlist and help the people of Iraq win their most important battle ... freedom.”

The US military has regularly re-enlisted service members in Iraq but Friday’s swearing-in was one of the largest, the military said.

"Calling the 'Economist' "anti-capitalist" is a good laugh. Ever read it?"

Yes, I have. Calling this article an accurate translation of the original is where I get the last laugh. Data were compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, it was analyzed and presented by 'Vision of Humanity'.

    From the site:

    *Global Peace Index

A ground-breaking milestone in the study of peace from the Institute for Economics and Peace. With data compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, it ranks countries by their peacefulness and identifies some of the drivers of peace.*

"The least peaceful country in the world right is Iraq, followed by Somalia, Sudan and Afghanistan."

When you visit their site you see that by their very selective metric Israel is next, followed by Chad, Central African republic and then North Korea.

    It's a joke.

Another anti-capitalist, anti-technology, anti-Western bunch of Lefty Luddites whose vague pleading for "peace" and groundless whimpering about "environmental destruction" masks explicit political ends.

Great story. Not a shot fired. The Columbians spent years gathering intel, doing reconnaissance, finally infiltrating via a seemingly sympathetic group - and in absolutely brilliant disguise:

"The pilots, she said, were posing as members of a relief organization, but “they were dressed like clowns,” wearing Che Guevara shirts, so she assumed they were rebels.

But when they were airborne, she looked behind her and saw Cesar, who had treated her so cruelly for so many years, lying on the floor blindfolded.

“The chief of the operation said, ‘We’re the national army. You’re free,”‘ she said. “The helicopter almost fell from the sky because we were jumping up and down, yelling, crying, hugging one another. We couldn’t believe it.”

The operation, Santos said, “will go into history for its audacity and effectiveness.”

    via MSNBC

So remember to ask the next sentimental Lefty you see sporting a Che Guevara t-shirt if he is with the Columbian Army.

"How long does the world stop to mourn the passing of an unrepentant white supremacist?"

    The world, you say?

America, far more racially integrated than where you or any other other non-Americans posting here hail from, is the only country on this planet where you might find a 'racist' or 'segregationist' politician?

"Obama on the other hand actually wants to get America out of Iraq and, you know, spend more tax dollars on America and Americans."

What he wants is to get elected.

As much as I dislike and distrust the post-McGovern Democrats and New Left products like Obama there are times when I think that as was the case with making welfare reform a reality, actually winning in the Iraq arena of the War on Terror quite likely can't be accomplished unless "liberals" can believe - can come to feel - they were the reason we eventually succeeded. (Yes, it's an odd comparison, since the stakes are vastly higher after 9-11.) So I could easily see Obama a month or two after the MSM ensures his election making noises to the effect that it wasn't the surge, or Gen. Petraeus, or the bravery of US troops, or the Anbar Awakening, but his nomination and then election victory which turned the tide in the region. And of course all the little Kos kiddies are invited to bask in the glorious sun of this new day that they and their Obamessiah made possible.

"It's a joke that approval of a single person's wife even rates in electing a political leader"

It wasn't a joke 4 years ago. Kerry's foreign-born billionairehead wife was proof for all the envious Europeans and Canadians here that he was the better candidate.

"The truth of the matter is you and most of the Republicans who oppose Obama have little else to go on when it comes to his candidacy other than whether or not he’s wearing little US Flag pins."

Hardly. Most conservatives judge politicians by the positions they take on the issues. It's quite simple.

Obama is to the left of the only avowed socialist in the US Senate, Bernie Sanders of Vermont. It's a matter of public record. http://nj.nationaljournal.com/voteratings/

    He wants to raise taxes.

He wants to raise the tax on capital gains from 15 to 25 and maybe even 28 percent.

He opposed Illinois legislation that was designed to protect the lives of infants who survive abortions.

Obama still hasn't released his birth certificate.

He still won't clarify his relationship with Tony Rezko. And more troubling is how his 'flexible' position on Iraq appears to have mirrored Rezko's investments - he was initially opposed to the war but when Rezko and his network land contracts in Iraq Obama says his position is not that different from Bush's.

It was revealed yesterday that Obama, who likes to portray himself as the sharing folks' indignation about the sub prime fiasco, was himself recipient of a sweetheart deal:

"Compared with the average terms offered at the time in Chicago, Obama's rate could have saved him more than $300 per month." - Washington Post, July 2, 2008 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/01/AR2008070103008.html?hpid=topnews

His mentor in Hawaii, Frank Marshall Davis, was a diehard sentimental old communist. Obama concealed his identity in his book.

Obama - who we are supposed to revere for his superior 'judgement' - sat for 20 years in the church of bitter, angry neo-segregationist nutjob, having chosen this ,uh, house of worship and congregation from among many in Chicago, making Obama either an admirer of Wright's racist Black Liberation Theology or a hopelessly naive man-child.

Most glaring though is his complete lack of accomplishments.

There is nothing presidential about the man.

As senator he has broken at least 2 federal laws.

    I question his patriotism.

Canada's support in Iraq would have been token. Afghanistan already has Canadian forces stretched to the limit. Besides, Chretien had family ties profiting directly from the large French petroleum concerns taking bribes from Saddam. There was no way a venal scumbag like that would have supported liberation.

"Obama’s high-profile embrace of a key theme of Bush’s time in office—the “faith-based initiative“—is just the latest example of him trying to show his centrist side."

He's showing his "centrist side" alright.

Like Clinton he thinks his supporters are all a bunch of Monicas.

"Two valiant keyboard warriors question the intelligence of someone who's putting his life on the line for an effort they continue to believe in but he has ceased to."

Ooowwhhhh. Yes, it still amuses after all these years how the Chicken Hawk 'argument' is supposed to be incontrovertible proof of the moral superiority of a group of people who like to call themselves "liberal" when it is about as liberal as the demand that anyone who disagrees with you be sent to the front.

I question not Sgt. Ralph's intelligence, patriotism, or valor, but how well-informed he is on McCain's policies. And I find his narrative a little too convenient for the mainstream media, now openly partisan and even willing to admit it.

Voted twice for Bush! But it turns out he lives in San Diego. What a rare bird in those parts, eh.

I seriously doubt McCain (2 sons been to Iraq) and Obama are viewed equally by those in the armed forces.

Any candidate who wants to cut military spending as drastically as Obama can hardly inspire confidence.

Any candidate who launched his political career from the home of a former terrorist (seen the latest Obama - Bill Ayers vid?) who tried to bomb the Pentagon probably doesn't inspire a whole lot of loyalty.
