I was in Nagoya and it was a worry at that distance too.

Come on, this is a serious article, not about the skirt she is wearing... well, yes, it does complement her figure very nicely indeed!

My uncle-in-law got the same cancer my father died from and is still walking around, hopefully permanently cured. And yes, my uncle-in-law was treated in Japan.

In the States, U.K. Most of Europe, there's this thing called "Common Sense"

    Do you seriously believe that?

Rape does not deserve death (penalty), sorry.

But it saves resources and reduces the number of scumbags.

There's something about Japanese shouted through a loudspeaker that just grates on my nerves.

Um, didn't you think this through before moving here? Maybe you were expecting crowd control, etc in English?

I remember that DJ train conductor thing (in the 90s?), was good to listen to.

Yamanashi Gov Shomei Yokouchi visited the Japan Tourist Agency (JTA) on Wednesday to formally request that tour companies stop running so-called “bullet climbs” of Mt Fuji overnight, during which climbers do not take sufficient breaks, TV Asahi reported.

Good. Who will help the climbers if something goes wrong? The tour companies?

I think we have all seen most of the above, or very similar, from time to time but I can add to the list: After 15 years of driving in Japan last week, for the first time, I saw a cyclist give a hand signal indicating that they were going to make a turn.

Not doubting you but I used to go cycling with various clubs here. We always gave hand signals. As for your average mama chari rider, I'd agree that's photo material. Seems a lot more people (Not 100%) use their lights at night which is a good thing.

Foreigners complaining about things that are the same back home, as though the problem is somehow unique to Japan.

Escalators going downwards at train stations where there's a wide staircase next to them (which means there's plenty of room for people to walk up and down). Not a biggie but can't comprehend why.

The occasional person who insists in speaking English when it's obvious I speak Japanese. I don't mind if they want to practice but I was a clinic once and they insisted in reading from the cards they had prepared. Only happened once, never went back.

Don't know why he picked Yao, except that I guess that the existing facilities might be useful.

I would have gone with inland Sennan but maybe the topography would not be suitable as it is rather mountainous.

山と高原地図 (Yama to Kougen Chizu, Mountain and Plateau Map) is a map app that shows the old paper hiking maps on your iPhone (Android?) with GPS location. Always be sure to carry the paper version but the GPS function is handy at times.

His plain-speaking iconoclasm and ability to brazenly ride out controversy won him admirers enough to be mentioned at one time as a possible future prime minister

    Yeah, right.

I didn't like this guy when he gave the teachers a hard time about tattoos. What they do in their own time is their own business. If it doesn't show, why conduct a witch hunt?

Getting back to the subject on hand - I'm glad he is facing concrete measures to shut his trap. Japan doesn't need the bad press this guy attracts.

Besides the physical steps he has taken, he is also playing a psychological game and it seems to be paying off, albeit with bad effects for some sectors, as we can see from the protests.

He's a popular figure and I guess a lot of people have been ready to listen, especially when the previous PM did not appear to be doing much. As for the politics, who care? People are slamming the current PM no matter which party they belong to.

Abe has provided optimism and it's a powerful force.

Its annoying that Japanese companies refuse to fire useless workers

Seen just as many useless workers back home as here. Try reading Dilbert sometime - it's a good reflection of how things really are. Problem is, some of you have been in Japan too long to realize that management back home has become more and more ridiculous. In Japan, it has generally become more flexible, depending on the company of course. Because the changes are gradual, you don't notice them at first.

Jack Seward wrote a piece about Japan being the land of ripe rice ears in one of his books. (Mizuho-no-kuni) It is an old name for Japan.
