I think that the main conclusion that can be drawn from all this is that the G-8 Summits have gotten way too big and are a waste of tax-payer money. Instead of trying to deal with every issue under the sun, maybe they should properly deal with a number of them. The summits are starting to look more like a circus performance. I'm not saying get rid of the G-8 just get rid of some of the excess.
Why would a Japanese person complain? Most Japanese have slept in western-style rooms before. Most Japanese hotels are western, usually only ryokan have tatami.

Japan still has a lot more to do, but all things considered she's an efficient country. Part of the problem with Japan unable to meet the demands of the Kyoto Protocol is that Japan made massive CO2 cuts and other environmental changes not long before the pact, so as Japan has less to begin with it's harder to cut large amounts.

However daylight saving time would definitely help.

I'm sure it's a large part of the problem, though I think women not having the ability to return to their former positions post-pregnancy and men not getting enough time off is the larger problem.
As for the number of deaths from overwork, I don't see them increasing, maybe remaining constant, but i doubt we'll see a rise.

Protestors tore up Seattle, G-8 Summits attract a lot of excessive anger, so there has been a need recently to choose more isolated locations

I think it would be a pretty good idea. Maybe a hard transition, but nonetheless good in the long run. Especially if as rascal says it would help family interaction. It might even have a small positive impact on Japan's birthrate. I do find it annoying that it gets dark so quickly here. I wonder if being lighter out for longer might be safer too.

I don't see how you could connect tatami with cannibalism. Anyway tatami has a strong cultural significance to the Japanese. Also carpet carries a lot of dust mites, and other undesirables.
No where does explicitly it say the Africans were the only ones in the ryokan. This is not in the least racist.

The US, wouldn't withdraw from the Middle East if Iran acquired nuclear weapons. America's arsenal is far larger than anything the Iranians could ever acquire, not to mention the hydrogen bombs. As for
No way, it would just create more tension. The Sunni nations would feel even more threatened if a Shi'a nation gained nuclear weapons. The Middle East is not monolithic, there is a lot of enmity between Sunni nations like Saudi Arabia and Shi'a nations like Iran, not to mention the whole Arab vs. Persian dynamic.

Even though the robber got away with the money, at least no one was hurt.
I don't think someone should be able to use force to defend their neighbor's house, but i think one should be allowed to use force to defend your own home.

Many other nations attend the G-8 summits as a way of making sure they aren't forgotten, and so that they can be kept up to date, as well as lodge requests/complaints

There wont be another Cold War, at least not between the US and Russia. The days in which there were only two superpowers around which the first and second worlds orbited is over. The rise of the third world particularly China, India, and Brazil completely changes the dynamic. However, I do believe that the missile shield is directed against possible Russian aggression and not Iranian.

I would never buy the dvd, but i love the commercials. My uncle's dog looks exactly like the dog in the cm, so everyone always calls her oto-san. As for the body guards, there are black people in Japan, it's not like they had to go all the way to America or Africa to hire them. Mai Kuraki usually has at least to blacks in her band for instance.

As for the size of the "guests", not all non-Japanese are larger than Japanese so size isn't really the issue here.

Whoever mentioned a king sized bed, and anyway, can you confirm that all these delegates own king-sized beds? Most of the people complaining are just minor bureaucrats. Also I don't think the Africans are the only ones in the ryokans (they were just an example), so it has nothing to do w/ the fact that African countries are poorer.

However, I do agree that their was a lot of poor planning on the part of the summit organizers. It's obvious that ryokan rooms are not the most appropriate accommodation for such an event. Also I highly doubt that such "visitors" could appreciate the true beauty of a ryokan

Tatami rooms are not a downgrade, but rather a cultural difference. Attacking something different as inferior is blatant cultural insensitivity.
Isolated locations have been chosen recently as a result of the mass out of hand protests and other security threats that exist when in a large city.
Also if you look at the article, the people who are complaining are not the high level diplomats or heads of state, but rather the platoon of cronies and other underlings that accompany the G-8 leaders. Also with the tatami rooms all you have to do is sleep there. You can do most of your work outside of the ryokans.

While I think sacking the coach was excessive, graffiti is a form of vandalism, the destruction of property and should be treated as such, as opposed to just a small "nuisance" as it is often treated in the West. There should be consequences for defacing property, especially something with as much historical and cultural significance as the Duomo.
