Wow, this isn't petty at all.

And no doubt if an Italian tourist resigned from his job because he had got drunk and threw up in Shinjuku station, Japanese people would be pretty amazed too.

Defacing a cathedral is a little different than getting sick in a train station.

Perhaps it's not so much the unfamiliar mode of sleeping as the hearty raw egg, natto and seaweed breakfasts that follow upon their awakening that are the source of the current complaints.

That's definitely a possibility, but then they would not have needed to bring carpet and beds in. Also, it would be quite easy for them to phone ahead and say they planned to eat elsewhere.

Wow, that is one of the biggest examples of cultural insensitivity I've seen in a while. I'm surprised the heads of state haven't reprimanded their delegations. Also why should the ryokan owners pay the extra costs? Especially when the governments of these whiny diplomats could easily cover the expense. Look at whose in the G-8. Lastly, tatami rooms are very nice, though I prefer a bed myself.

I agree, a lack of solidarity amongst Iraqis is contributing to the whole problem.

This just proves to all those people a while back who accused the Japanese of being irresponsible vandals that the Japanese are far more responsible than the rest of the world (in general, not always).

    coward American terrorists

Terrorism is defined as "the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear ". The US does not target civilians. When there are civilian deaths it is a result of cross-fire or terrorists using civilians as shields (hiding in civilian/residential areas).

Who would want a Chicago Olympics? I think Tokyo and Rio have the best chances, w/ Rio perhaps having the best.

The iPhone is WAY more advanced than the average Japanese cell phone

By technologically superior, I think he meant that it didn't cater to the Japanese demand for paying w/ your phone.

That article title is a little redundant, I think. All the candidates are committed to ending the war.

"I'm always amazed when I hear people saying; 'That George Bush, he's a great leader'. And I wonder, where can one find a drug that would make one so delusional?"

Conservatives/Republicans aren't the only ones who are guilty of being idealogues. Also I think one can still be proud of one's country regardless of the administration. However, having a government worthy of one's pride certainly helps.

    spudman,

The soccer world cup helped warm tense relations between Japan and Korea (showing they could cooperate), as for the Nagano Winter Olympics, Winter Olympics' are never met with as much enthusiasm as the Summer Olympics'. However the Nagano Olympics were a success. Also I merely suggested the possibility of the psychological benefits of an Olympic Games. (possibility being the keyword).

either rotated or replaced by emerging economies.

The whole point of the G-8 is to maintain dialogue between the world's most influential democracies (why Russia's in there, I don't know). Anyway most of the world's emerging economies have poor human rights/democracy records. (key word being most).

Maybe before demanding a pay raise they should show the public they deserve one by cracking down on the cruel behavior that goes on in the stables (like that one guy being beaten to death a while ago).

Yes, the parents should have supervised better, but i think whoever's in charge of the drain should have had it secured.

how exactly do you imagine Olympics could address the problem of aging population

I never even implied that the olympics would address the agin population problem, i merely stated that the Olympics would be a constructive outlet for Japanese pride, as well as a symbol of hope for a future revival of a country in slow decline.

Has anybody paid ANY attention to the failure of a recycling program this country has

The Japanese are a lot better at recycling than a number of other developed nations I can think of.

Though there are certainly a number of negatives to the Olympics, if Japan and Tokyo can successfully pull this off, I think it could serve to rejuvenate the city and the country. After all there isn't much hope or excitement for the future right now in Japan what with the aging population and other problems.
