Why do they need to dump fuel? In case of a crash landing to prevent an explosion?

To think that people don't go to war hoping to profit in some way is completely naive.

No I am not saying people don't go to war to make a profit, but rather that people shouldn't be trying to profit from a tragedy after it has happened.

First of all Japanese are not convinced that foreigners commit all the crimes, or even most of them. However like in most countries there is a tendency to blame foreigners for many crimes. Japan is not the only one, just look at Italy, South Africa, France, and the US.

Plus tree in Japan would be pronounced tlee, so I hope they scrap that name altogether..

The Japanese don't have any trouble pronouncing R's, just L's, not that it really matters or anything.

Who cares how low the standards and expectations have sunk in the US and Europe. This is Japan.

This has nothing to do with who won the war or who started it. This is about disrespecting a war memorial and the dead. I'm sure people would be up in arms as well if people were digging up Gettysburg, the Beaches of Normandy, or any other battle that is emotive to many people. I and apparently Mr. Yamamoto have no problem with veterans taking sand as a memento, but rather people taking advantage of a tragedy (the war and death, not so much the Imperial defeat) and making a profit.

The New York metro and the Shinkansen are by no stretch of the imagination the same.

I agree w/ JasUK, many of the people teaching English whether in schools or out schools in weekend/afterschool programs aren't really qualified to teach. Many learn English programs are taught by native English speakers who have no prior teaching experience.

If you look at the trains in Tokyo there isn't any graffiti. I'm not saying that there isn't any graffiti, there's a lot of it, just not on the trains. Also I've never seen a bullet train that's been graffitied so it's a big deal. As for the random English phrases that don't make sense, you see t-shirts with Japanese on them that doesn't make sense all over America. Also, i really don't think the article was trying to insinuate that a foreigner did it.

    thundercat,

Thank you and sorry, my statement wasn't so much a criticism of your statement, but rather an attempt to present an "unbiased" statement in favor of whaling.

Japan is not the only country with large numbers of grown men and women living with their parents. The problem is even more pervasive in Italy.

    moonbeams ...

I meant the US as an example, but more broadly English speaking countries in general.

You definitely do meet more Koreans and Chinese for instance who are good at English than Japanese. So I don't think it has anything to do with the structure of the Japanese language.

Japan should reduce her whaling quota, but still be allowed to hunt some whales.

Their entire mandate is to promote whaling under the guise of research

The ICR isn't the only organization w/ questionable motives. The IWC betrayed its original purpose of protecting whales to allow for sustainable exploitation in the future.

The pro-whaling nations accused the IWC of basing these decisions upon "political and emotional" factors, rather than upon scientific knowledge. These nations allege that the IWC prohibits all whaling, even though some in the scientific community have concluded that limited hunting of Minke Whales might be sustainable. They argue the IWC has swayed from its original purpose and is attempting, under the guise of conservation, to grant whales an entitlement to life, absolute protection from being killed by humans for commercial purposes.[28] Non- IWC whaling nations have expressed similar sentiments. Canada withdrew from the IWC after the vote to impose the moratorium, claiming that "[t]he ban was inconsistent with measures that had just been adopted by the IWC that were designed to allow harvests of stocks at safe levels."

A large part of the problem is that the education system focuses on grammar and the technical parts of the English language, at the expense of learning conversational English. So, while many Japanese are better at English grammar than Americans, their pronunciation and ability to carry out a conversation is rather poor.

    they're generally dim-witted

Would you like to clarify that statement? because if you're saying that the Japanese are less intelligent than other people, you're sadly mistaken.

If Iran were ever to launch a nuclear attack on Israel, a lot of Palestinians and other Muslims would die, as well as many of Iran's Hamas allies.

If the US was divided from Japan North Korea would probably nuke Tokyo in a second.

Very unlikely, Japan has been working on her missile defense program ever since North Korea started acting like a spoiled child and started lobbing taepodong missiles over Japan and at her (for those that fell into the Sea of Japan). Also even a regime as crazy as Kim Jong-il would be hesitant to nuke the world's largest metropolis.

People need to be able to distinguish between ordinary Muslims and Islamic fundamentalists. Not all Muslims want to see Israel wiped out, I doubt even all Iranians. Like any religion Islam has its radicals. Although the mullahs of Iran are much more vocal and aggressive than others.

I was sure no country could have stranger ways - rituals, basically - of venting en masse their displaced personal anger than could the Japanese.

    What do you mean?

I don't think Iran would really attack Israel. I think it's just the government and others with influence pandering to nationalist and fundamentalist sentiments as well as trying to direct discontent away from domestic problems. Also the US wouldn't invade Iran, the American public would never go along with it following the mistakes of the Iraq War. America doesn't need anymore hits to her reputation.
