I don't disagree with the facts that questionable forms of interrogation are being used at Gitmo, but I really don't think you can compare it to a gulag. That's just hyperbole.

I can understand Israel's eagerness to see the return of their soldiers, but I think in the long run this will just lead to the deaths of more Israelis.

Lamest excuse ever. If he was scared of the Chihuahua he could have just kept on walking, it's not like the Chihuahua could have chased him or anything. Poor dog, poor owner.

Xentrix you're right on the Prince Hiro, it's just that I've rarely (maybe once or twice) heard Prince Naruhito referred to by his childhood name. Sorry.

People like Jesse Jackson don't help mend race relations, they merely antagonize non-blacks with their provocative rhetoric. Obama with his more conciliatory tone will accomplish way more.

Don' mention it. I myself am a little confused by how much power the IHA has over the royal family, so I can't really answer your first question. as for your second, I don't think that they dislike the princess, but rather they are overly concerned with her bearing a male heir. I think now that Hisahito has been born they should let up a little on her give her some more freedom and space. I think that the IHA takes their job of protecting the Imperial Family a little too far. They are so concerned with a male heir and sheltering the Imperial family that they are actually hurting it. One would think they would notice this, so the whole thing baffles me. Also the next Emperor of Japan would be Naruhito, Hirohito was the current emperor's father. I strongly disagree with the belief that the Imperial family itself is the problem, but rather i think it is the IHA. The entire family has a lot of pressure put on them. Unlike many Western royals they have to always be "perfect" and scandal-free, they have a wide array of ancient Shinto rituals they must perform, plus they have all the diplomatic demands that other royals have. Lastly, though I have the utmost sympathy for Princess Masako, one has to put things in perspective. Empress Michiko not only faced Masako's problems, but she was also disliked by her mother-in-law and yet she has continued her official duties, even at her current age.

I know japanese christians, atheists, shintoists who don't participate in anything buddhist except for funerals, etc. Also I was referring to practicing Shintoists not nominal ones. Anyway my point is that not all Japanese (regardless of religion) hate the environment as some have stated.

Nice to see the gov't understands the underlying problem for once. Suicide is not an individual problem, it is often a side effect of a problem in society, such as healthcare problems, bullying, etc. Also many suicides often unintentionally kill or injure other people (jumping off buildings, using gas, or diving in front of a vehicle).
Posted in: People used to say 'why do we have to use tax money to deal with suicides, when this is an individual problem?' But unless the entire community understands that this is an issue, it can't be solved.

That's incorrect, according to the WHO, Japan has the world's 10th highest suicide rate, though it could be lower as in many countries (particularly the Middle East) suicide is declared murder out of respect for the dead or to protect the reputation of the family.

Don't talk about the Japanese as if they were all the same. This isn't some dystopia in which everyone's identical. Many Japanese love the environment, while many could care less. Shintoists in particular believe in harmony with nature. Same as the rest of the world, there will always people who fight to protect the environment and those who fight to exploit it.

I agree with rjd jr. These are public beaches that are frequented by families. Also the host country is perfectly within their rights to restrict anything they want to. (However, I am opposed to the utra-conservative behavior in Iran and Saudi Arabia). Even in much of the West/Japan nudists are restricted to certain beaches where they will not offend the sensibilities of the general public. I don't want to be walking on the beach past people having sex.

South Africa's all show, no substance. Look at the anti-foreigner attacks on Zimbabweans a while back, as well as the inaction of the South African gov't. I don't understand why, one would think that a healthy Zimbabwean economy/stable gov't would be beneficial to South Africa.

The main purpose of the IHA (in all seriousness) is to manage the Imperial family's image, as well as set up appointments, sort of like a PR person, secretary, and "servants" rolled into one.

My main point is that you can't assume that all foreigners speak English, which is why I said, though English would be helpful it isn't going to help everyone. Just the other day I asked a guy on the street for help turned out he spoke French.

In English, the word tea by itself refers to all styles, there isn't a way to differentiate unless you add an adjective in front (ex. Japanese). Same in Japanese where the root "word" cha is nonspecific. Unfortunately people do put sugar in their oolong, it happens all the time at P.F. Chang's.

As the saying goes, urban redevelopment has a net zero outcome. When you build a fancy new skyscraper, shopping center, apartment, or other building, an older one falls out of use and that part of town becomes unpopular. There isn't so much growth that both are at full capacity. This is especially true in trend-loving Japan.

Depends on the tea. Western-style tea is nice with milk, but putting milk or sugar in Japanese or Chinese tea would be really weird. I always think people who put sugar in their oolong back in the states (at Chinese restaurants) are crazy.
