They expect us to be polite (or is that just a figment of my imagination!) - yet they cannot bestow on us the same courtesy now!

Actually, there's much to be said for playing the noble gaijin amidst the sea of impoliteness, inconsideration and rudeness found here. To hold the door open for people, let ladies go through the door first etc, while this is all common practice back in the UK, it makes you feel somewhat distinguished if you do it here. One can only hope that such demonstrative politeness will have a civilising effect on the natives.

People overseas always ask me about Japanese politeness. I always think there is a big myth about this. They have no politeness unless you know them or they are in some way connected via an acquaintance or colleague. Otherwise, their manners are terrible.

It seems that unless there is someone shouting frantically into a Tannoy system, or there are lots of posters and stickers somewhere telling people to do something, then they just basically have no manners or consideration to other people. It's very depressing.

Been here over 5 years and have only one Japanese male friend. He spent a lot of time overseas so is pretty normal and well adjusted. Mostly, find them very difficult to get on with, or mostly just boring. Generally, those that have lived overseas have a bit more life in them.

A few years ago there was a spurt of original good movies: Battle Royalle, Audition, Ring. Over the past couple of years, I've seen some small-scale films in little cinemas that have been pretty good. Climbers High and After School were fairly ok.

Some of them have been shockingly bad. That 21st Century Boys thing that is really being marketed heavily is childish in the extreme and pitifully bad.

I worked in a Japanese company that was full of the old school guys, where work defined your life and the boss told you when to breathe and take a crap. Unimaginably awful. I stopped going as well, and pledged to myself never to work for a Japanese company again.

It's the only thing you can do when dealing with dinosaurs.

Too many people playing computer games combined with too many people who walk down the street permanently glued to their keitais, or just show a general lack of consideration to others is turning into a violent mix.

How about getting to Narita in less than an hour?

That would have the greatest benefit for most of us in Japan.

And the fact that you need an invitation from someone in order to join. It's very representative of the closed nature of Japan.

The day she went to court NHK news gave 15 minutes of their 30 minute broadcast to this case.

A couple of days before that they dedicated 20 minutes of total the 30 minutes to Ichiro getting his new record.

There's only one realy conclusion you can draw from this. Don't get your news from Japanese TV.

This lass is a Cancam model. There's only a 30 year age gap between her and Ishida. To call this a waste is something of an understatement.

Yeah, good on these chaps for going against the flow. I don't dare turn the TV on today, I can only imagine how bad it will be. A pure witch hunt.

My British male friend just married a Japanese girl recently. He was over the moon the day they got married.....and on the phone to me a month or so later absolutely FURIOUS that she is now demanding he hands over his entire salary every month.

Yeah, they try and do that. It's the worst mistake a newly wed chap can make. Under no circumstances should such an agreement be entered into, he'll regret it for the rest of his married life.

I left my Selmer Mark VI on the bus once. Didn't even realise I'd forgotten it until they phoned me up about it. Must be like losing an arm for this lass.

This has all the makings of a great made-for-TV movie/mini-series.

Yeah, but only in countries obsessed by minutiae.

I saw the post this morning and was wondering who she was.

She's the weather announcer on Mezamashi Terebi every morning between 7-8am. Due to the pitch of her voice only dogs and teenagers can hear what she's saying unfortunately.

About 5-6 years ago it was incredibly sleazy with lots of women propositioning you on the street. That's died off over the last couple of years, though there are still some areas, such as near Seibu-shinjuku station, that have this. The scale seems a lot smaller than what it was though - I think then that there were a peak of prostitutes in Japan at that time as even my local station was surrounded by Chinese masseurs. Kabukicho seems to be mostly for Japanese people. As with others, I'm mostly ignored when I go there.
