Probably a lot to do with cuteness.
Ai was really terrible in the Olympics and I couldn't work out what the fuss was about. It was the same with those two badminton players who are always on telly, or that beach volleyball team. Likewise with this chap Ishikawa, and that hankachi oji or whatever he was called.
Just a bit of minor titilation and it's not really the sport they're interested in.

Too right, they don't deserve them. They only report something if it makes Japan look good. Had it with the Olympics and other sports.
This Ishikawa might have potential and might be pretty good once he matures, the behaviour of the media here though makes me see look on him as just another stuffed shirt. I pay no attention.

I'm wondering the same. In comparison to London, where the people are friendly, there's nice ample parks, good bars and restaurants, Tokyo is pretty boring. Sure it has good transport, but it is a pretty boring place to live and the only thing to do here is go shopping. If you don't like this you struggle to find much entertainment or enjoyment.

While I liked this show with Shaku on it, and Moe is perfectly dishy, I hope that NHK will use this opportunity to give us more of the entertaining, and sometimes nail-bitingly tense, dramas that they so often produce.

The appointment of Mino Monta must surely be a good move for those of us who think this whole Olympics idea is a singularly stupid idea.

Myspace is very good for checking out new music by my favourite artists. As a social interaction tool it is very poor though. Facebook can be quite interesting, especially finding old schoolfriends and photos of old flames.
Many people are spending too much time on it though and relate every tiny mundane detail about their lives. That can be pretty boring, like Twitter.

college degree means full time employment? Derangement! I know a lot of people who even have PhD in Japan who are simply working as contract workers. Its a choice between surviving and dying, you want to live? go find a work. What is the available job? Contract good for a year
There are basically too many postdocs. Something about stupid government targets or something and not enough jobs afterwards. I did a postdoc for a year in a national laboratory. They initially wanted to pay me 250k per month - as I'd be on 400k in my previous job they bumped it up, but I had to justify it. Most junior researchers are probably averaging only 300k a month. That's piteously low. You'd have to be a fool to do a PhD in this country.
Very glad I left that career now.

It's not so much staff who are mostly ok. The little people at the immigration desk sometimes like to prove a point, but I would do the same if I was sat all day stamping passports.
The airport itself is a dump. Getting to Narita is the worst aspect. I'm less keen for international travel as the airport is simply too far away and takes too long to get to. Once there, it's incredibly boring with all the charm of a school cafeteria. I'm surprised at how limited and lacking the "renewal" was. It's very much a public sector overhaul, and looks incredibly cheap. That little garden they've put in is worthy of scorn. The extremely limited books available there (unless you're interested in gardens in Kyoto or the art of tea ceremonies) shows really how poorly integrated Japan is. The food sucks. I was left with the choice of Starbucks or a curry. A curry served by an old woman and eaten on a cheap plastic table.
They have so much to learn.
Heathrow, for all it's faults, is an enjoyable airport to lose a few hours. US airports are the worst for staff behaviour, rudeness and giving you a generally bad reception.

There's an English news programme on on saturday mornings that is presented by two Japanese. It's a terrible show presented with really stunted English and news features that are exceedingly boring, such as the new development of some mediocre technology by Japanese researchers, or the chaning colour of leaves in Kyoto.
I'm not sure if this programme is by NHK, but I can imagine that this service will be very similar.

For me it had too much action and not enough plot. I had the impression that they rushed the production of this film possibly to cash in on the success of Casino Royale. Quantum of Solace is lacking in a decent storyline and hook. Action doesn't really compensate and is the problem with a lot of films nowadays. This film is mostly hype and bluster derived from Casino Royale.
On another point, why is Japan the only country in the world that is three months behind others in the showing of this film? Can't all be down to tranlsation issues, surely.

Kubukicho is a Japanese only place anyway. Name an area in Tokyo where there aren't sex shops that people will go to even if Kabukicho goes the way of Ginza? Ugusuidani or Okubo for Korean, Dogenzaka for Chinese/Japanese; Roppongi for aged haggard Chinese etc etc.
Such a big city, so many choices if you're into that thing.
