Reminds me of when Arakawa won gold at the winter olympics. The TV station actually showed her winning performance first, revelled in her gold with the normal JTV back slapping as though the presenters themselves had won or played some part in it, and THEN showed the rest of the competition in the order that it played out. Like announcing who has won a game of football and showing highlights before the match starts.

Japan is obsessed with itself, or at least what other think about it. Part of the reason is the cuture of idolising celebrities. They pick up person and he or she turns in to the face of that sport, as seen with Ai chan or Hanikami Oji. Or when a foreign footie team plays in Japan, they focus on one player to the exclusion of all others. C.Ronaldo has been treated like this along with Beckham and others. I love (hate) the way they zoom in on that person ignoring all others. They do the same at opening cermonies too. Seeing the gooning face of Japanese athletes is wonderful but please show us something else, like possibly another countries team.

Why are the Japanese obsessed with the success or failure of Japanese films?

Reminds me of the Aesop's fable about a miser man who converts his worth into gold and buries it in a field to protect it. One of his farm workers realises this, digs up the gold and replaces it with an ordinary rock. The miser laments his loss but a wise neighbour points out that accumulated but unused wealth has no true worth anyway and thus, for the miser, the rock is of equal value to the gold he has lost.

As heinous as the abductions are, on a human level, I often wonder what reaction you would get if you asked the average local the question as to why NK has issues with Japan. NK's very existence is a direct result of Japan's war mongering and meddling during the 20th century.

The Vitz is a nice car to drive, and suburban Tokyo doesn't require 60,000 a month for parking. More like 15,000 or so. Cars are very useful if you need one.

Catching a cold due cold weather is one of the greatest myths of out time. Then again, the locals will believe anything if told often enough as seen with the common belief in blood type 'traits'.

Abductions? Reminds me of a couple of years ago when my brother-in- law's father suggested that the returnee abductions story would be top news in the UK. I didn't have the heart to tell him that it's really a non-story outside of Japan, and quite rightly so.

I think it's because, like the French and others, they are jealous of the fact that English is the de facto global news language, courtesy of the BBC, CNN, Reuters and AP, etc....

At least in English, they can force Japanese propaganda down our throats and have a chance that a global audience may understand it.

If the service is in English, they will be trounced by the BBC and others. Why bother?

Women in Japan like these borderline shemales though. just look at the typical host for example. Thin to skinny with a hair style their mother would be proud of...

It's part of the culture, I mean just look at Japanese video games with their effeminate characters, etc. Men are out of fashion.

Crazy. So once he had killed the first person, he then reversed into the second victim and killed her. A bad day for all concerned.

    AlfGarnett,

Haven't you seen the fortune tellers on the streets in Japan? Palm reading is another one, and bet most believe in that too. Why not my left hand then, or my foot!!...is normally my reply to 'observations' about my palm.

On the whole, the Japanese are quite superstitious. You only have to see the queues of people waiting to buy lottery tickets in 'lucky' Yurakucho, to realise this.

Add to that the herd mentality that exists here, and you really can trick them into believing anything.

Ask any local and they will tell you it's related to character, though it's psuedoscience with roots in Nihonjinron. After all, a Japanese A is somehow different to a foreign A, apparently.

When asked, I also said I don't know my type, which led to gasps of horror. But what happens if you need blood, they said. My reply was that a doctor would administer blood to me, and it is something that I would never do myself so I really have no practical need to know. But how would they know your type? Easy, just check and even if I guessed, the doctor would have to check to confirm anyway, to avoid killing me.

    ChrisBiggins,

This is Japan, so surely you know that being in a drama or singing on TV, neither makes you an actor or singer just a 'talent', who is expected to be able to do everything asked of them. Jack of all trades, master of none.......... springs to mind.
