I'm Jewish, but more than 20 years ago I gained a brother shortly after midnight on a Christmas Day. This naturally led to Christmas coming with a birthday cake and candles as well as the movie and Chinese restaurant visits typical of American Jews on Christmas. Of course, it's sometimes tough to find a non-Chinese (or non-Japanese) restaurant open on my brother's birthday, but there have been years where we dodged the question entirely (by going to Disneyland, Disney World, on a cruise, etc.) Also, Hannukah sometimes intersects Christmas, leading to a menorah displaying its holiday candlelight on the kitchen table along with the birthday cake.

Japanese companies that want to be English-speaking-only would find their business opportunities much better if they were to migrate to anglophone countries. Mind if I suggest America?

Ironically, Hiroshima and Nagasaki are among the safe places.... I wonder what the people of the postwar era would've thought of that...

This is an issue here in New Brunswick, NJ, and in nearby New York City. New Brunswick needs more bicycle lanes and wants a law against sidewalk bicycling. (Never mind that some sidewalks around here are so wide and underpopulated that they make decent bicycle trails.) In New York City, there are bicycle lanes in numerous places (thank you, Mayor Bloomberg), and sidewalk bicycling is a no-no. However, bicyclists are asked to stay in their lanes. That wouldn't be an issue if bicycle lanes weren't obstructed by parked cars, construction projects, and other obstacles. My advice to Tokyo et al: be flexible with bicycles. Don't allow them on the sidewalks, but do allow them elbow room so they can maneuver.

I suppose Gaddafi was assassinated, as opposed to dying in battle or being executed, but there's no real way to tell for sure because it happened on the spur of the moment after he was captured. Someone hurt Gaddaffi fatally.

if McCain had been elected instead of Obama, it would've been bye-bye Amtrak. Just remember that next time the GOP stands up for election with a wrong-way guy at the helm.

Let's face it: if you want whaling to continue, whales must survive as a bunch of species. Furthermore, there's the ethical problem that whales are relatively intelligent animals. If you can find a way to make a stupid whale for the meat, be my guest; however, whales as they currently are constitute a problem for the ethical eater. Other than that, my idea of whaling is Captain Ahab waving harpoons angrily at Moby Dick, so refer to someone who knows more about whaling and whale meat.

note: Blago is a moron because he broke the law, and he broke a code of ethics that he swore to uphold. Moreover, he did that very blatantly, and thus wound up embarrassing himself all the more because of that.

Blago is a moron, Obama's trying to start his presidency, and the sooner Blago is out of the way, the better.

No offense, but I thought Tokyo Disneyland would be closer and better than the LA version (it has DisneySea, after all!) But the original Disneyland is where it all began, and there's history there that's not quite in the newer parks.

(Shrugs) If he can't speak English, then it'd be harder for anglophone physicists and him to understand one another; however, he still has a scientific community to talk with. If there's a lot of people who speak only one language, and a lot who speak only another, then there'll be two separate scientific traditions emerging, each with their own discoveries and theories.

LOL at troofing. Since it has already been established that Barack was born in Honolulu, not in Kenya, and that it would have been pretty inconvenient for Dunham to fly to the other side of the world from Hawaii (a prestigious travel destination and thus one which would command high prices with airlines) while pregnant on a student budget anyhow, the people making conspiracy theories oughta just give up and move on. Unless you think ET begat Obama on a flying saucer or something.
