From experience, I figure people are simply lax about their personal safety and certainly seem to lack a modicum off common sense. I was on my roof last summer sealing around some upper windows, when I turned around my 76 yr old mother-in-law had also climbed on the roof! getting on and off the roof was scary at best! nb..I was a roofing engineer in my previous job.

Uniglo may be the company to break the mould, letting some new light into Japan. Students today are getting wiser and considering global employment rather than the treadmill system of Japan. More students are considering a year out to get that all important experience that so many US and European student take for granted.

What everyone seems to be missing here is the fact that the UK has just discovered a massive oil field in the Falklands hence the heated crossfire between governments. The 30th anniversary is simple a catalyst for igniting past ownership debate. The UK is trying to downplay the situation, But after serving in the last Falklands war as a marine you can bet your bottom dollar that the UK are going to do there damnedest to hold on to them..watch for news of more warships silently appearing off the falklands.

2.28 billion yen is a lot of aid for the disaster victims, some of which are stilll waiting to be re housed. The security of the Japanese whaling scientific research vessels is obviously more important. Come on Japan wake up!!

inspector blake....well put, well said. Handing out the free pill leads to immorqal and unnaceptable behaviour in the population. I quit the UK years ago for the very same reasons. Good luck in Spain.

This is Japan, a very pragmatic country. As soon as the government say its winter the summer clothes are put away and the winter woolies are brought out of storage, regardless of the tempereture. It's winter!

I agree with johnshiomi, moral education need to begin at home with parents taking responsibility and bringing their children up in a loving caring atmosphere. Johnshiomi is correct, as a teacher you get to know the parents long before you meet them!!

Japanese drivers are simply accidents waiting to happen. Every day without fail you can see children jumping around in cars, the parents believing of course that they are perfectly safe. Yes they need education on road safety! but this is not the root of the problem. The root lies in the way the people of Japan are educated along with their cultural beliefs. follow the one path, dont look to the left or the right. A society that is unable to think for themselves if it means wavering of the path. Controled by central government and local government to think and behave in a way that they can be controled. If the government tell the people to buckle up and stop running red lights then they will, because they are used to conforming. Of course they could do this without being told to but after too many years in Japan I see that the people lack common sense and simple reasoning skills. people are going to carry on killing their children through the lack of simple common sense.
