28 y.o mother with 10 y.o. kid, which means she had the kid when she was 18. I think this says a lot. If you are that young with kids and no education, and with no support from family... My mother had me when she was 18, but my grandmother was beside her all the time, and my father was very, very responcible. Besides, at that time , in my darn socialist country it was pretty easy to have children- free child care, free medical care, free school until university, cheap food and clothes, 3 years maternity leave (my mother didn't use it, though, but my grandmother was allowed 1 year leave for child care!)

But what puzzles me most is the fact that there were no visible injuries. If a 10-9 y.o kid doesn't want to die, he would put a hell of a fight. Especially if there are two of them. Especially in a car.

As far as I remember, the reason for Hashimoto's "war on tatoos" was the fact that some worker in "an educational facility" (jidoushisetsu") boasted with his tatoos, thus implying on his ties with yakuza. And of course, nobody wants yakuza in their shiyakusho, right? As Farmboy stated, tatoos are mostly assocoated with gang members, although there was a female civil servant who complained that she got her tatoo during her graduation trip abroad, kind of omiyage. Interesting is, however, that the most of those with tatoos turned out to be in the transportation and the enviroment departments (garbage collectors, bus drivers, cleaners, road workers and such).

Average burger- the one made for the masses

Great burger- the one I make at home particularly for my kids taste, with lots of love and attention.

I guess the picture was taken right after the storm yesterday. It reminded me of these lyrics:

When the wind fills the sky

    the clouds will move aside

and there will be a road for all your dreams

And for any day that stings

    two better days it brings

nothing is as bad as it seems

The mankind survived without foie gras for so long, I think we can manage without it from now on too.

This thing was on the news 2 days ago. The parents divorced, and since the mother couldn't take care of herself and the baby, the father's family paid her hospital fees and took the baby. The baby was registered , but never went neither to kindergarden, nor to school. The officials asked the dad about his son when it was time for the boy to begin school, but with no result. This reminds me of the case some time ago, when the uncle this time gave his nephew for adoption and kept collecting benefits.

Only sons and grandsons? Interesting, last time I went back to my home country, somebody called my Granny pretending to be " your granddaughter" . Granny cut her just as I was reaching to have one-in-a-lifetime conversation with "me".

I agree that this group hasn't been promoting really good movies so far, and I think awarding Maeda with this "Best Supporter" stuff is just an attempt of the group to use Maeda's popularity to promote foreign movies. No, even Maeda won't help them, I'm afraid.

These people aren't activists. Activists usualy gather signatures for petitions, organize lectures and peaceful protests. These guys are extremists. Fortunately, there aren't that many of them in Korea.

Suppose I buy such speakers and put through them my favorites-Metallica, Sonata Arctica, Hammerfall, Blind Guardian. Won't it look at least disrespectful to these bands?

It is not whether violence is shown in the media or not- it is about HOW it is shown. While in the past violence is shown as something existing, but hardly appraised (except in witch hunt related documents), modern media, esp. movies show violence as the ultimate answer to all our problems and as something cool.

Example - all Karate Kid movies and likes. Kid gets bullied, learns karate and retaliates/earns respect. Ultimate answer to bullying is violence. And while karate takes time and effort to master, gun doesn't.

There is actually a safety device- a rucksack (backpack) with a string attached to it. There are some of these on sale on the net, but my hubby bought one during one of his trips abroad. Its main purpose is exactly to prevent the child from straying away . I use it when I take my daughter with me shopping and...oh, the horror I see in others eyes! I'm such a monster for keeping my child on a leash like a dog! But somehow I think that if the mom (and many other parents) were OK with putting such safety rucksacks on their kids, and were not afraid of bashing and badmouthing, many tragic accidents like the one in the article would be prevented.

I'm a stay-at home mom of two, Osaka resident. I don't remember what I did exactly in the moment of the earthquake, but I remember that my husband was at home. I suffer from pretty bad anemia so I tought I'm being dizzy again, when my husband came and said "Did you feel the earthquake?" Then it started shaking again, and I tought thet this time it was too long. We turned on the TV and they announced that in Tokyo it was M5. At first we tought lightly "Why are they so scared, as if this is the first time they experience M5 shock?" They new information came about the magnitude being 7, and I started feeling uneasy. Live broadcasts and footages from all over Tokyo and Tohoku followed, and then came the tsunami, and I, like, went blank. "This is not happening, this can't be happening" I tought. First the volcano in Southern Japan, now this! We ditched everything, my husband left his work, and we sat on the coach and kept watching all day. But you know what impressed me? The proffesionalism and the strenght of the broadcasters. I remember Yuko Ando from Fuji TV and Nobutaka Murao from NTV stayed almost 24 hours taking on their shoulders the task to keep everyone informed as well as possible, and showed remarkable strenght and will to stay calm .
