@Wurthington~ Sorry meant to add that something does have to be done about the work/life balance…
Perhaps the father wasn't working. Perhaps he can never see the children under Japan's ancient sole…

What a dismal result. UAE are not ranked in the top 100 in the world by Fifa, and they even dragged Nakamura away from the Pub League for this game. Still could only manage a 1-1 draw?

I wonder if they'll slap the "Not carrying gaijin card" charge on him.

Of course he's not German - otherwise there would be a towel reserving the best spot next to the moat.
I think he's a Brit who resides in Spain.

When I am not on the computer, I am a weedy little bespectacled runt, with a crap job, crap hair and no social life, who couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag.
In cyberspace I am one of the best and strongest high school wrestlers America has ever produced, with women begging their way into my bed, and a six figure income.
Wouldn't you throw your weight around when things are good?

Nippon5, of course ripping off the elderly happens everywhere. I just think that Japanese old people are particularly easy targets with the view a lot of them still hold that Japanese is virtually crime-free and the crime there is here is committed by foreigners.

I'm afraid the clueless naivety among many of the locals - especially the older generation - will always make them easy prey for con artists. A few months ago on TV there was a documentary about a guy who had been scammed by a "girlfriend" who pretended he had made her pregnant. He himself was the victim of a fairly elaborate and well-planned fraud. His parents, on the other hand, were pushovers. The girl had never met them before, but she just turned up at their house one day, anounced that she was carrying their son's baby and without even checking with him, they gave her 400 000 yen!
Rather than station cops around ATMs, there should be a campaign to educate old people that the crime-free Japan they thought they had is gone forever (if it ever existed at all) and that the place is now as full of crooks as the rest of the world.

the snag with that is that in Japan the "consequences" for the bigwigs often amount to nothing more than a couple of seconds of bows, fake tears and insincere apologies.

I think most of those have less to do with shame and more to do with having nothing to live for.
If I were just finishing university and starting out as a salariman, I'd give some thought to topping myself rather than sign away the next 40 odd years of my life.

rjd is right in that it is deplorable to see anyone getting away with it; however, it certainly suicide in itself certainly isn't an act of taking responsibility, let alone the ultimate. That would be helping all the facts come to light, compensating anyone you damaged, making sure it didn't happen again, etc.
I also wouldn't call suicide cowardly - it must take some guts to overcome the fear of the unknown and kill yourself. I'm glad, however, to see CEOs and government officials doing it - it's one less parasitic pension for the system to support in future, and it does mean they won't be doing it again.

Er, no. Look at the pathetic, sorry excuse for news coverage on this site. And before anyone asks why I come here, it's for the comments, not the news.
Online news is terrible, and until it shapes up there will always be a place for newspapers.

Good on her. Once she reaches the inevitable glass ceiling for women in whatever her job is, hopefully her eigo will be up to scratch and she can get a transfer to the US. Then she might meet a guy who CAN operate a washing machine and walk past a gundam catalogue without picking it up.
She's spot on with her comments. I've known men here who can't go and buy a shirt without telephoning wifey to find out their own size first. Grown men!

How many high schools in Japan have a debating society? None of the five I've worked at. Mock elections around the time of the real political elections? Nothing like it, unless you count the school elections for student president which boils down to who is kakkoii and who has gammaned the hardest. Teachers do nothing whatsoever to encourage debate or opinion, which suits the useless bureacrats to a tee. They don't want the public to be interested in politics, so they keep the status quo not quite uncomfortable enough for the sheeple to get over their fear of changing it.

Yep - outdated. If the person isn't old, pregnant or disabled, they won't be getting my seat. That said, I never sit in the priority seats, so I shouldn't be their first port of call anyway.

I think the chances of being murdered by a stranger are probably higher in the west, although certainly not non-existant in Japan. The chances of being murdered by your family seems higher in Japan, especially for young kids, although again that isn't to say it never happens in the west.
Poor kid. Stories like this make me feel relieved that the Japanese birth rate is so low.

I looked at the IOC site to see if boobug's claims that they go by total number of medals was correct. Certainly up to the Turin Olympics they ranked golds first, then silvers, then bronzes, which would obviously have China way out in front at this olympics. I couldn't find a table for this year yet.

"Overall these Olympics have simply been another showcase of Americas might and talent. They are once again on track to haul in more than 100 medals from a variety of sports. No other nation has shown the versatility and skill the US has. Damn great show USA. From the pool to the diamond, damn good show !"
Thanks for that, boobug. Did you see the men's relay? As well as dropping the baton, they couldn't even afford to get their logos sewn on. Black marker scribbles pinned on were how team USA advertised themselves. I'm glad you didn't say from the pool to the running track.
