I've little sympathy for Sony after their actions in recent years. First they put rootkit software on their CDs, leaving millions of PCs open to hackers. Then they forced PlayStation owners to choose between keeping the functionality of the PlayStation they bought (e.g. linux support) and being able to use the PlayStation network. Then they sued those who tried to restore the features Sony had removed.

It's about time Sony were punished for their heavy-handed bullying. I doubt they will change, but I won't be buying any of their products until they do.

The758: I use Linux (Slackware) at work. I have many computers and Windows just isn't up to the job. Apple isn't any good either as I would have to buy their hardware and they don't have what I need.

I won't be buying any iPad/iPhone/iPod for the reason that Apple exerts too much control over the software.

I have an Apple notebook; it's a nice machine but I find the Apple software to be restrictive. iTunes won't play flac files, their office suite won't open/save in OpenDocument format, QuickTime won't play most of my video files etc. It should be simple to add support for other file formats, but Apple refuse to do it. As a result, I don't use their software, other than the OS and XCode.

Dubya: If Mr Ishikawa has the same rights as anyone else, why do you demand that he should be disqualified from office? Don't you want him to have the same rights as "everybody else"?

It appears that you only want candidates you personally approve of to be allowed to run for office: what kind of a democracy is that? That sounds like the way they do things in Iran. Perhaps you would be happier living there.

The people should be allowed to elect whoever they want. I don't want anyone telling me who I can and cannot vote for.

When the UK's Channel 4 first started some regions did not have enough commercials to fill the breaks: they used to play music instead. Why couldn't the Japanese stations do this, instead of showing the same ads over and over again? It's clear that the TV companies lack any kind of imagination or creativity: a look at their programmes confirms this.

I think I'll stick to downloading programmes. Then I can watch what I want, when I want.

cyan77: try tunein radio for free radio streams. I have a WD TV Live Hub attached to the TV and it can stream all those stations too. No need to listen to the presenter on your local station wittering on about what she had for breakfast any more.

Just flew from Haneda to Taipei the other day. Haneda is nice, but the international terminal is quite small. I can't imagine it becoming much of an international hub, especially given the daft rules that are in place for flights to the US and Europe. Why does it take until 2013 "at the earliest" before flights can leave at a reasonable time? What are they doing in the meantime? As far as I know the runways are all complete, so it's not like they are waiting for some construction to be finished. The only reason we have to wait until 2013 is because some bureaucrat says so.

I suppose printing billions of dollars doesn't help. The Americans have been trying to devalue their currency for the past year or two. They have succeeded and one result is higher oil prices.

You know things are getting back to normal when the Japanese moaning starts up again. Those who complain about the US bases (mostly Okinawans) won't be satisfied by any amount of relief work carried out in other parts of Japan. They are storing up their whinging and whining, which will be restored to full force in a month or two.

I'm sure Goldman Sachs is involved somewhere. Note that there was no US outcry when speculators forced up food prices a few years ago, leading to unrest and famine in many poor countries.

If the US reintroduced the ban on commodity speculation (a ban lifted as a result of pressure from the likes of Goldman Sachs) it would go a long way to solving these problems. Make those that buy forward contracts take delivery of the product.

I think some of the evacuees should be moved into the homes of TEPCO directors. Let the directors sleep in the school gymnasiums. They can stay there until they have rehoused every one of the evacuees.

The Italians are being rather disingenuous when they claim they are following the Schengen rules. Tunisians require a visa to enter Italy: how many of the migrants had a valid visa? If they didn't have a valid visa they should be deported, not given travel permits.

Last year there was an earthquake and tsunami warning up here. The tsunami last year only flooded part of the town near the seafront, so maybe people became complacent. At that time many people ignored the tsunami warning: these are the people who died last month, along with elderly people who were either too slow or too stubborn to evacuate.

apecNetworks: The epicentre was nearer to the land this time, so although the magnitude was lower the amount of shaking where we live (Sendai) was quite similar. It made a big mess of our flat (again) and more things were broken, mostly the fragile, nice things. The walls of the building I'm working in look like a jigsaw puzzle with all the new cracks. It doesn't feel very safe and I'm heading for the exit at the first hint of a tremor. I will be a nervous wreck if this carries on much longer.

With a UA mileage card it used to be that taking flights on ANA only accrued something like 70% of the miles you would get on UA and no elite bonus miles. Now it appears we will get 100% of the flight miles, plus the elite bonus, e.g. another 100% for gold-level members. That's quite a difference.

Hiyori Yama is in a small place called Yuriage; I liked to cycle down there with my son, a nice ride along the river down to the beach. Google maps have updated their satellite pictures of the town and it's nearly all gone. Many of the places we used to visit have been destroyed, it's very sad.

The crack in the pit, leading to the sea, isn't the real source of the problem: that lies somewhere inside the reactor building. By blocking the exit route to the sea the reactor building will flood, making work inside impossible. Additionally, water will eventually leak from the reactor building onto the surrounding ground and from there get into the air.

It would be better to pump all of the water into the sea, get into the reactor building and fix the source of the problem directly. The crack in the wall is the least of their problems, but seems to be attracting the most attention.

The UK government is in the process of scrapping its aircraft carriers, so how do they expect to enforce a no-fly zone? They want someone else to do it I suppose. They shouldn't ask for something they are not prepared to deliver themselves.
