Airlines like fuel surcharges as they devalue the miles they award. If I want to use ANA miles to fly to London they still want me to pay around Y50000 in surcharges, taxes and fees. So much for "free flights".

Also ,the fuel surcharge is only applied to overseas flights, whereas domestic flights are exempt. It's nothing more than a con and should be outlawed.

Does Mr Davies have a diplomatic passport or an official position in the US embassy in Pakistan? If not, it is unlikely that he qualifies for diplomatic immunity.

The despot Kim is getting worried that the people will find out that it is possible to overthrow bloodthirsty dictators. Keep the leaflets coming, let the North Korean people know the truth about Kim, his numerous palaces and luxurious lifestyle.

M51T: South Korean soap opera DVD's, imported from China, are popular in North Korea and many people do have players. That's another way that people in the North find out that South Korea is far better off than they are.

The bloodthirsty Gadhafi and his sons should flee whilst they have the chance, otherwise the fate of Ceausescu awaits.

I wonder if the fat little tyrant in North Korea is getting worried yet?

Unit 731 is the kind of thing I would call an unforgivable outrage; I wonder what Kan and Maehara would call it? Let me guess: "regrettable".

Vessels from Korea and Taiwan fish illegally in Somalian waters and what is being done about that? If Somali resources are being stolen by foreigners, who can complain when they retaliate?

The anti-piracy vessels should also be charged with putting a stop to illegal fishing so that Somalis have a legitimate way to make a living.

I never knew that Sendai was in central Japan. The area is nice, but over the years the urban sprawl has covered much of the surrounding countryside. The Toyota factory is built outside of the city, adding to the sprawl and environmental destruction. Building on a brown-field site would have been much better, but that would mean a loss of profit and we can't have that can we?

That's right Badsey. It's the likes of Goldman Sachs and other speculators that are driving prices up. They should be banned from speculating on food, as they were in the past. People will go hungry and countries will be destabilised because the greedy bankers want even more money than they have already.

Diet sodas are full of chemicals, such as aspartame, whose long-term effect on the body is unclear.

Better to stick to tea, or beer if you want something fizzy.

The high yield may seem attractive, but the 12% yield example given doesn't take into account the repair fee and service charges. I'm not sure how the residual rental income will be taxed, but that could make a hefty dent in the profits too.

The author talks about a possible 5% capital gain this year, but this is pure speculation. Falling salaries and bonuses would seem to leave little room for appreciation in housing prices, or rents for that matter. And what happens if (when) interest rates rise?

cwhite: I think if you plan to buy and sell within a few years you would almost certainly be better off renting. Purchasing the property means paying consumption tax, estate agent fees, loan arrangement fees, land registration tax etc. Add all that up and it comes to a couple of years rent. Factor in capital depreciation and the short-term buyer is definitely on to a loser.

I'm still renting after 15 years. We have the cash to buy a place, but decided not to. Renting gives us flexibility and we can invest our capital overseas where the yields (may) be better. Plus, if the building is destroyed in an earthquake we can walk away (unless we are buried underneath it). If you bought a place with a loan you must still pay the loan back, even if your dream apartment is now a pile of rubble.

Unless wearing the bracelet is a condition of their sentence or parole there is no legal basis for forcing offenders to wear this thing. Mr Murai does not have the authority to pass sentences on criminals as he is not a judge. All he is doing is posturing, like most other Japanese politicians.

Wouldn't using metal be more environmentally friendly than plastic? It would last longer and be easier to recycle. It would also cost more, which is something cheapskate manufacturers don't like.

My brother travelled from Paris to London on the Eurostar last night and said that there were only two people in his carriage, so it seems the long queues should be gone by now.

I was lucky enough to avoid Heathrow on Sunday, flying Tokyo-Copenhagen-Birmingham. There was/is plenty of snow in Copenhagen, but everything works. The Heathrow operators are simply inept: they don't invest in snow clearing equipment and don't make much of an effort at all. Airlines like BA are equally as bad, giving up at the first sign of snow. Then, even when the runways are eventually cleared, the airports are unusable because BA's planes are blocking all the gates.

Large fines should be imposed on BAA for every hour their airports are closed. That is the only way to ensure they get their act together.

Venezuela is gradually going down the toilet as Chavez nationalises more and more companies, each one becoming wasteful and inefficient. This is socialism in action. Everybody will be in an equally poor and wretched state by the end. Apart from those at the top, of course.

In releasing the documents Assange/WikiLeaks have not broken any US laws. Freedom of the press and freedom of speech are basic rights in the US and there is nothing the US can do about it, except spout drivel about "terrorism". They are now forcing US banks and credit companies to cut off funding to WikiLeaks, but this should hopefully spur the creation of alternative payment systems which are not subject to US government control.
