"Two office workers were sitting in the priority seats, speaking on their cell phones": that tells you all you need to know. These people are selfish, self-centred dicks, and there are many of them.

It's not illegal to publish those documents, even in the US. The person who supplied them to WikiLeaks has probably broken the law, but that person isn't Assange. The likes of Peter King who call for Assange to be charged with espionage and for WikiLeaks to be declared a "terrorist" organisation are nothing but posturing fools.

Maybe it was a dream, but I thought that a year or two ago the government introduced a bigger tax deduction for those buying a house built to last 50 years, or more? I haven't seen any new housing advertised as such, which I suppose means the same, shoddy, sub-standard buildings as ever are being erected.

How about arresting the gangsters running the prostitution rackets? Or are the police too scared to do that?

I thought JetStar was OK when I flew with them. I took my own food, which was far better than the slop you usually get, and the fare was low.

It's a good idea: never mind the "rights" of the criminals, what about their responsibility to obey the law and the rights of citizens and lawful residents to go about their business unmolested?

The requirement to obey the law should be made a condition of granting a residence permit, then criminals wouldn't have grounds to whine about their "rights".

The unelected Chinese despots are hardly likely to criticise other unelected despots are they? These cruel people don't care if civilians are killed; they probably enjoy it.

The tax should be based on alcohol content alone, that would soon get rid of those awful beer-like drinks. If it's a choice between a beer-like drink and nothing I'll take nothing every time.

If Mr al-Awlaki was born in the US then he is also an American and should, according to his own logic, kill himself without delay.

This protest appears to have been peaceful, but others are not. You can find video on you tube of a Chinese being attacked by participants taking part in a similar fascist march through Tokyo.

This time the fascists were protesting against China. But next time they will be protesting about non-Japanese. Remember: these people hate all non-Japanese, not just Chinese.

I never realised that a guarantor could be required for a job. But it seems strange that the Tohoku man has been on annual contracts for ten years: I thought three years was the maximum before a job became permanent?

The whole practice should be outlawed and landlords etc should rely on references and take on the risk of default themselves, or by buying insurance.

Touch-screen entertainment systems are a bad idea on a plane. Just wait until you get some dick sat behind you bashing the seat for hours on end.

Why are front-loading washing machines so expensive in Japan? I could buy a washer/dryer for about Y75000 in the UK, or about 1/4 of the price of this one. Even the top-end German models are only Y175000, plus they have metal cases, not plastic.

It's quite pricey, looking at the menu. Plus they add on a 10% service charge, which is unusual for a family restaurant in Japan.

Much of the "news" these days is speculation about what might happen, rather than reporting on things which have happened. Political news is reduced to showing a single soundbite from each party. Anything to do with sport "man kicks/hits ball" isn't news and should be in a separate programme. Extended news bulletins are unnecessary and usually just repeat the same things over and over again: the art of journalism is to succinctly summarise the facts into the available time/space, not to waffle on into the night.

On one recent flight the guy across the aisle from me got out his laptop and started playing a loud movie without using headphones. After a minute or so I told him to use the headphones, which he did. I wonder what he was thinking. He was like the youths back home who sit at the back of the bus playing dreadful music at full volume from their phones.

On another flight, in August, a boy of about 8 years old was running around in his underpants and screaming for much of the flight. It was cold on that plane too. Many a time I was just dozing off, only to be startled into a heightened state of alert by an ear-splitting scream as pants boy ran past. That was a long flight.

Kawachi: I meant that I take the Shinkansen from Sendai to Ueno and the Skyliner from there to Narita. It can be done in just under three hours on a good day. Maybe I can get to Haneda 30 minutes quicker, but when you're flying half way around the world it's neither here nor there.

If you go to small, owner-operated restaurants they will usually give you what you want, how you want it. Someone working in a chain restaurant, paid by the hour, doesn't care about and can't be bothered indulging your foibles, especially when there's no prospect of a tip.
