11000 euros is for those who were not injured and sounds a reasonable amount to me. Those uninjured who want more compensation for their "suffering" should toughen up and stop whining.

Nothing about longevity of the housing in there. I seem to remember a scheme to give tax breaks for housing designed to last 50 or 100 years, but I have yet to see any housing advertised as such. That's because it's mostly cheaply-built rubbish that will look like a shanty town after a couple of decades.

The law hasn't been followed. The Japanese "journalists" should be asking: who is responsible? who will be punished? how will they be punished?, instead of just regurgitating Okada's "apology".

Tanigaki is partially correct. Stopping the Yanba dam was in the DPJ manifesto. Noda promised to implement the manifesto. Noda is going ahead with the Yanba dam, therefore Noda is a liar. On the consumption tax issue the DPJ only promised no increases during their four year term, which still seems to be the case.
I suppose we will be rid of the useless lump of Noda in a few months, but I don't expect much from any new government.

I can understand if shareholders go after the board members, but if you are an Olympus shareholder and you sue Olympus isn't it the same as suing yourself? The only winners there will be the lawyers.

Iran is in danger of falling for the American provocation; can't they see that the Americans are itching for any excuse to attack? Better to ignore them, sign agreements with China and export their oil there.

15.5% of Y314.1 billion is about Y50 billion, not Y60 billion. It's still an astonishingly large fraction of the music market occupied by one group though. I suppose people buy CDs rather than MP3s as they get a picture or two with the CDs to leer over. Plus, you can make your own MP3s if you have the CD.

I believe that downloading a file isn't illegal, but uploading it may be. Also, streaming video can be saved on the computer and therefore isn't any different to downloading a file.

So the fat toad Gingrich doesn't like the media investigating his private life? Yet Gingrich and his republican chums, with their hypocritical moralising, were always trying to publicise Clinton's private life. Double standards indeed.

It wasn't a "public briefing" as ordinary members of the public were not allowed in. If they were, they might have asked why the government continues with the Yanba dam project when they already admitted it was a waste of money.
These meetings are only for show, the audience are selected and who asks which question is decided beforehand. The government don't want to hear the opinions of ordinary people. That the people still vote for these same clowns time after time is what surprises me.

TEPCO should be nationalised, the share price set to zero, the stock delisted and the management fired. This should have been done last April.
Instead, after one year of lies and inept management by all concerned, all this plan seems to do is to give TEPCO public funds and let them carry on as before.

I also thought the statute of limitations had expired and that was why Hirata gave himself up now. The media seem to be ignoring this point and the police and prosecutors seem to be ignoring the law. Why isn't this being challenged by "journalists"?

It's already possible to enter (some) Japanese universities in the autumn semester. Here, we also have a one year international exchange programme that starts in the autumn. Tokyo university claimed that the change in term times would allow more Japanese students to study abroad, but I think that by the time students are ready to go overseas they are too busy with job hunting, so they stay here. That won't change any time soon.

Elbuda: Good point about the shoes. Nice shoes are about three times the price here, so I buy them back home. Some of the difference is due to an import duty on leather shoes.
Chemists can be extraordinarily expensive here, particularly aspirin, dental floss and vitamin supplements. Fortunately the first two are light, compact and easy to bring back from abroad and we have a couple of years supply at home now. My wife orders the vitamins from the US, saving 50% or more.
What about mushrooms? Six piddley mushrooms for Y198! I saw a huge box of mushrooms in the UK recently for Y120. Someone in the Japanese mushroom business is coining it. Same with cheese: the Yen gets stronger, yet imported cheese gets more expensive. We hardly buy it any more.
Still, if you work around the rip-offs you can live fairly cheaply here, which is just as well when your salary keeps getting cut.

I doubt the cost of sending out the customs boat is as high as some claim. For example the crew would be getting paid anyway so that cost can be discounted. The boat would normally be sailing around somewhere else, so some fuel costs can be discounted. If the customs boat would otherwise have been sitting idle then maybe the government should think about getting rid of it entirely and saving some money that way.
