If the demonstrators were prevented from taking food and drink into the airport they would eventually be starved out without force having to be used. Yet it seems that they are allowed to do as they please.

The wealthy urban types that are behind these demonstrations may soon find themselves out of work thanks to their foolish actions.

Fortunately, my students have all found jobs next year, but I have heard from colleagues of offers being withdrawn e.g. by car parts companies. The system for placing graduates in employment is far too rigid, with most companies only recruiting once a year. Students who find their job offers withdrawn at this stage are well and truly stuffed. But the idea of sueing the companies is laughable. As a lawyer, Mr Ogawa should surely know that any lawsuits will likely take umpteen years to resolve and, in the unlikely event that the court doesn't side with the companies, the compensation will be in the Y100000 range.

I don't expect a solution any time soon. Japan's position of wanting all four islands back will never change. Therefore, if Russia only offers two islands the situation will remain unresolved.

Before Aso became PM he appeared on NHK and had to write something on a card. What he wrote was practically illegible. It seems he also has trouble reading. So now we have an illiterate PM who mistakenly thinks he is better than everyone else.

There are lots of idiots on bikes, but the pedestrians are often no better. I often see people walking in the road, even when there is a pavement they could use. They are not crossing the road, but choosing to walk along it, sometimes far from the side. They are like unthinking drones.

On BA.com a return flight from London to Tokyo leaving on 2nd February and returning on 16th February costs GPB 558.50 (Y90000) (including fees).

On the Japanese BA web site flights on the same dates, but going in the other direction cost a whopping Y151460. That's Y60000, or 68% more than the UK price.

    Don't fly with these thieves.

I won't be booking any flights until the fuel surcharge is reduced. Until then, the thieving airlines can get stuffed.

In the past few years I have become increasingly unhappy about all the development in Sendai. The tree lined streets and parks are being destroyed to build a new subway line. Hideously ugly new developments are sprawling over former countryside at the edge of the city. Huge out of town shopping malls are killing off city centre shops. The city encourages this by building wide roads wherever it can and moving amenities such as schools, hospitals, swimming pools etc. out of the city centre to distant suburbs. They are also eager to bulldoze the "traditional markets" and build even more glass-box office buildings.

Now the car companies are moving in and destroying even more of the countryside. Pretty soon it'll be like living in Nagoya, and who wants to visit Nagoya?

The Yen has only really been strong for the last few weeks. Besides, if the exchange rate is so poor, why don't the companies keep their earnings in foreign currency for the time being? Then they can take advantage when the governement tries to force the Yen down in value.

The strong Yen hasn't had any effect on airline fuel surcharges has it? The thieving airlines must be raking it in.

"If we adopt an unique OS, everything will be easier, because being universal it will be at first accesible"

One of the reasons Windows is so susceptible to viruses is precisely because the program is exactly the same on each PC. On the other hand, a virus which targets my version of Linux (Slackware) is unlikely to work on Ubuntu etc. Diversity enhances security, whereas a Windows monoculture is prone to malware on a grand scale.

"(because if you use the uncomfortable "word" in linux, you can not open a doccument in a PC with windows or pictures i.e.)"

Word isn't available for Linux, and I wouldn't use it if it was. LaTex produces far superior output and costs nothing. You can also use LaTex on Windows. Files are saved in plain text format, so you are not locked in to secret file formats which leave you at the mercy of the software vendor.

"by the other hand, it will be less expensive, because being globally accepted it reduces costs."

Windows costs hundreds of dollars per copy, Linux costs nothing. Windows is expensive because it is almost a monopoly. Competition lowers costs for everyone. The costs of dealing with viruses, licenses, software audits etc are much higher for Windows than for other platforms.

I imagine the web versions of MS Office will only work with Internet Explorer, otherwise there would be no need for Windows.

I can do all my work without any Microsoft software. There's no need to constantly update firewalls, virus and spyware scanners etc. No need to worry about licenses or be forced to run Microsofts' "Genuine Advantage" program. No need to have Microsofts' DRM programs running all the time, trying to stop you using your computer in the way that you want. No need to spend any money on buggy, bloated software.

No need for Microsoft at all.

I arrived back at Narita airport in Chiba on Monday. The underground concourse where you buy the train tickets had half a dozen or so police there, milling around idly.

One of them asked to see my passport. I pointed out that I had just shown it at immigration and customs. Also, anyone entering the airport has their passport checked, so what was the point? He just said "anzen no tame".

So there is an example of Chiba police in action: 6 guys standing around at the airport doing nothing when there is an unsolved murder they should be attending to.

Grampa McCain is on his last legs, but the dirty tricks are just beginning. Look out for increasingly desperate attempts by the Republicans to disqualify as many Democrat voters as possible on whatever spurious measures they can think of. Watch as dodgy, unauditable, electronic voting apparatus (provided by Republican party backers) is brought in which mysteriously allocates extra votes to McCain.

Unless the Republicans can engineer a terrorist atrocity on the US mainland in the next few weeks, McCain is headed for the retirement home and a comfy rocking chair on the stoop.

I was tempted by the savings rates on offer from those Icelandic banks, more than 7% p.a. on sterling deposits in some cases. I'm lucky that in my case nagging doubts about Icelandic banks outweighed greed, and I invested elsewhere.
