It's bad enough with the knife-wielding nutcases that occasionally run amok; imagine the carnage if these people had access to guns.

Naruhodo1 and Horserfella: Of course, if you stop for a break you won't get fined. But isn't it a little silly to drive like a deranged lunatic and then park up right by the toll gate? Why not take it easy and arrive in one piece?

The highways have cameras at the toll gates that record the license plate numbers. It should be a simple matter to calculate the average speed a motorist has travelled at between two toll gates. If this is higher than the legal limit points and fines can be automatically applied. That should prevent these groups from driving like lunatics.

I can't see this working. They already have a stability pact, which is widely ignored. If the treaty is changed countries will simply fiddle the figures to make it appear they are meeting the targets. For example, PFI spending in the UK is not counted as government spending, with the result that it appears that hospitals etc are being built for nothing. The money still has to be repaid though.
Not long ago the Conservatives promised to put PFI spending on the books, but that promise was soon broken. They prefer the off-the-books PFI, even though it's far more expensive, wasteful and complex than direct government investment. This is exactly what will happen in the Euro zone. Countries will still end up bankrupt despite claiming to have run a balanced budget.

Fujitsu have a dreadful record for their IT business in the UK. Late delivery, way over budget, doesn't work properly etc. For a company that is trying to focus on services, rather than hardware, they need to do much better to avoid being wiped out in the medium-long term.

It seems that Yomiuri do not deny that Mr Watanabe influenced the appointment of Giants' coach so I wonder where the libel is that they allege Mr Kiyotake to have committed?
I suppose old Watanabe is furious that someone had the nerve to stand up to him and now he is wasting company funds pursuing a hopeless libel action that he will surely lose, making himself look even more stupid as a result.

But the main criterion to be elected in Japan is to be the son of a previous MP. No other skills or ability are required.
You can rearrange the cow pats however you like, but you'll still be left with a pile of dung at the end.

Given the electricity shortage in Japan I would say electric cars have no future here. Of course, the government could always build lots more nuclear power stations so that people can keep their cars charged. What's it going to be Japan?

The usual LDP posturing once again. They will go on and on and on and on and on until Ichikawa resigns. Then they will ask Noda to take responsibility for appointing Ichikawa and go on and on and on and on and on about it, boycott the Diet, lose a vote of no-confidence in Noda etc.
If Nobuteru Ishihara thinks Ichikawa should resign because of his remarks maybe he should also be calling for the resignation of his dad, who has made many more idiotic and offensive remarks and is a world-class clown. Yet young Nobu has nothing to say about that. The hypocrisy of these LDP weasels is quite something.

1.5 million animals are sold to Japanese each year, but pet shops claim to sell only 770000. I expect many sales are not reported to evade tax as pet shops are often operated by gangsters.
It should be mandatory for all pets on sale in a pet shop to be fitted with microchips. If unchipped animals are found during a spot check the shop is closed down. Chips must be fitted by a government-approved vet and a register kept of which animals were supplied to which shop. Shops must keep records of sales; if a shop cannot account for any animals it will be closed down and/or fined.
Unfortunately, the government lacks the will to implement any of these measures, prefering to leave the gangsters free to run these sordid businesses.

“The term ‘online video’ is about to disappear as video becomes available to every device,” Mehrotra said.
But when I use YouTube on the box I have connected to the TV many of the videos won't play as "the holder of the rights to this content forbids its use on stand-alone devices".
I've given up using YouTube on that device because of that.

If in doubt, draw up a supplementary budget and hang the expense. The "temporary", 25 year income tax hike starts next year I think. According to the paper I will be down about Y9000 per year, which doesn't seem too bad. It's the 8% pay cut and 5% consumption tax increase that will be the real killers, if they go through.

I neither know nor care which tablet is best, but I wish Apple would stop wasting their time and money on law suits and let consumers decide which product is best. I don't want Apple to decide what I can and cannot buy: that's up to me. Lots of competition will force Apple to raise their game and keep improving their products.
