Why is the European Commission threatening Belgium with huge fines for a 4.6% budget deficit and not France, which has a similar deficit? How will a fine reduce the budget deficit?
Confidence in the Euro is evaporating and the clowns in charge cannot agree on anything. Either give the ECB the authority to buy as many bonds as is necessary to restore stability, or accept that the only way the Euro can continue is for permanent transfers of cash from north to south be established. Fines and austerity will not work.

Above, we can read:
"The respect for the king is deeply ingrained in Thai culture, and it is not artifially enforced."
"We don't want anyone talk or write about our King not right, unreasonable and I want to say almost 65 millions Thai people here in Thailand Love and respect our His Majesty The KING and Dynasty they are always in our heart."
If the Thai monarchy were universally respected there would be no need for the lese majeste law as nobody would insult the royal family.
The fact that people do insult the Thai royal family proves that they are not universally respected and that some part of the Thai population is critical of them. I suggest that there would be far more criticism if people were not cowed into silence by the threat of ludicrously long prison sentences.
It's time for Thailand to do away with these antiquated laws and let people speak their mind. I understand that the current king is indeed widely respected, but the next in line isn't. Is Thailand a free country, or a backwards, feudal dump?

Nothing will be done; any increase in taxes will be more than matched by increases in spending.
Look at the figures and it's clear that Japan has no chance of repaying its debts: a falling population, falling salaries and increasing numbers of elderly and unemployed will see to that.
Who loses when the government eventually defaults and introduces the New Yen? Anyone with savings, pensions held with insurers and banks etc. Make sure it's not you.

I booked a flight to London for Christmas/New Year a couple of months ago and it was 40% more expensive than last year (Y157000 this year). Fortunately, I was able to use miles for my wife's flight and only paid $250 in taxes for that.
Booked another one for March/April earlier this week and that was Y140000. It's significantly more than it used to be, whatever the time of year. The cheapest I ever got was Y70000, all in. Nowadays the taxes and surcharges come to more than that.

I had pneumonia a couple of years ago. It was misdiagnosed at first, until I started coughing up blood. I wonder if the same happened with Akihito. A 77 year old with pneumonia is a serious matter. We could be seeing Emperor Moustache on the throne by the end of the year.

Mr Suzuki is getting a bit above himself making demands of VW. As one of the largest, if not the largest, shareholders VW could demand Mr Suzuki's resignation at the next shareholder meeting, or make life difficult in any number of ways.
It seems that Japanese CEOs don't understand that once they sell shares in their companies they are no longer personal fiefdoms to use as they please. I remember the furore when Livedoor had the audacity to buy shares in that radio station. The radio station directors were outraged that someone might try to take over the company by buying their shares. Then we have Olympus directors lying through their false teeth and causing shareholders to lose 80% of their investment in days. I'm still waiting for the arrests for fraud; it could be a long wait.
I think the lesson is: don't buy shares in Japanese companies.

If everything is not on the table, as Noda seems to claim, he entirely misses the point of the TPP. If Japan wants to seek exceptions for certain products it is free to negotiate with individual countries to find a mutually acceptable compromise and leave the TPP to those who are willing to put everything on the table.
Unfortunately, Japanese "negotiating" tactics appear to be to repeat the same thing over and over again, conceding nothing. Refer to the "Northern Territories" issue for an example. This is also why four years of "negotiating" a FTA with Australia have gone nowhere.

Noda only said Japan will join talks with TPP member countries on the subject of Japan joining the TPP. After that, another agonisingly-slow decision must be made on whether to join the TPP itself. That's assuming that the TPP members will allow Japan to join, which is unlikely given that Japan will demand exceptions for agricultural products.

I'm shocked to read this news. The government told us Fukushima produce is perfectly safe, yet it turns out that it isn't. How could the rigorous government tests fail to spot this contamination? I expect it's an anomaly and we will soon be able to start feeding our children Fukushima rice again.
You know, only a fool would believe the results of government "tests" on radiation levels in food products. I certainly don't and we aren't buying any food products from Fukushima or the surrounding areas, no matter how many times some clown of a bureaucrat or minister claims they are safe.
Just look at the radiation levels in Fukushima and Koriyama cities: they exceed 5 mSv per year and are not safe for children, yet the government does nothing. Why would anyone expect that food grown in the surrounding areas would be safe? It isn't, and for the government to claim otherwise is ridiculous. Do they really expect us to swallow their lies, along with the contaminated food they falsely claim is safe?

I think the US will be looking to force its IP laws on TPP member countries. That means any company making a gadget becomes liable to pay royalties to US companies holding vague patents that should never have been granted. It's like an extortion racket and will be coming soon to TPP member states.
As the number of TPP countries increases, the pressure to introduce "safeguards" will grow. That means no cheap food imports to Japan as, even if tarriffs are eliminated, restrictions on the volume of imports will be introduced instead.

To swim 8800 km in 150 days at 8 hours per day requires a swimming speed of 7.3 km/h. The current 1500m world record time is 14 min, 34 seconds, which equals a speed of 6.2 km/h. Clearly, Mr Lecomte cannot do this without the aid of sea currents. Even with the aid of a 3 km/h sea current Mr Lecomte must swim 4.3 km/h by himself, which is very difficult. For comparison, the fastest swim of the English channel averaged 4.85 km/h.

Looks like Noda has got himself into the same situation as the buffoon Hatoyama by promising to make a decision by a certain deadline. Now they are seeking a "consensus" among two groups with opposing views; what a farce.
Meanwhile, in a fine example of opportunistic posturing the LDP weasels, who earlier supported joining the TPP talks, now oppose them.
I think Japan should negotiate with individual countries, although four years of negotiations with Australia on a FTA haven't made much progress. When it comes to agricultural products Japan just refuses to concede anything. Given such intransigence Japan should not join the TPP talks as they would be joining in bad faith.

It's hard to remember when I last watched anything on the commercial channels. I can't stand the noise of the adverts: a squeaky-voiced woman or screaming bloke plus background racket. Why can't the TV manufacturers make a TV that mutes the sound during the ads? The programmes are atrocious, made with a budget of about Y10000, mostly consisting of groups of squeaky-voiced women and shouty blokes failing to amuse.
I do watch the NHK news regularly, or "Lies and Half-Truths" as they should call it. I'd love to know how they decide the running order for that programme. It's fascinating to observe them skirt around the real issues of the day before moving on to an item about a young lady golfer coming 27th in some minor tournament.
Still, with internet TV and radio I don't really care what tripe the local broadcasters are serving up. Perhaps falling audiences will spur them to come up with something different?

I feel Japan would be better off negotiating individual trade agreements with each country.
But I wonder if all the doom-mongering by the farmers is justified. There is no tarriff on oats imported into Japan, yet they still cost 5-6 times the UK price. I expect that if agricultural tarriffs were eliminated the retail price would not fall significantly, but the importers and middlemen would make a tidy sum.

If Mr Kikukawa claims to have done nothing wrong, why is he resigning? Let's have a clear explanation of what Olympus got in return for $687 milliion in advisors fees.
This finally made the NHK evening news last night in a short item, far down the running order, but they just parroted the Olympus line of "we did nothing wrong" and only stated "the share price has fallen recently" without saying by how much. No questions were asked by their "journalists"; I wonder why they even bothered going to the press conference.
