There are a few cycle lanes in central Sendai but, alas, they are all too often occupied by pedestrians, parked cars and even parked bicycles. If the police want to fine cyclists for riding on the pavement how about fining pedestrians for walking in the cycle lanes? Or at least make pedestrians liable for accidents caused by them walking in the cycle lane.
Riding in the road is OK in the city centre: where the road has more than one lane in each direction the inner lane is often occupied by illegally parked cars, but usually there is ample room to ride around the cars in that lane. Where there is only one lane I tend to ride in the centre of the lane to stop cars trying to squeeze past when it's not safe to do so. That can irritate some impatient drivers, but that's tough. If more cyclists are forced into the road it means slower journeys for car drivers.

The article talks about "sugary fizz" and mentions another study into very high sugar consumption. US fizzy drinks contain high fructose corn syrup (glucose / fructose), not sugar (sucrose). It should be made clear what types of sugar we are talking about.

"The value of real estate properties in Sendai suburbs has also soared, with price per tsubo of land reportedly up fivefold": this is complete nonsense, land prices are not noticeably different. The flat below ours has been on sale for months, the price has recently been reduced by a few million Yen and still no-one buys.
I heard that the insurers were paying out large sums and were hardly questioning claims. That can explain the rise in retail sales. We didn't have insurance so no windfall for us.

TuneIn radio is also on my WD TV live hub, which also has Shoutcast. The tedious gasbags on the local radio station were turned off long ago.
Japanese radio stations are listed on TuneIn, but you have to live in their broadcast area to listen, which defeats the point of broadcasting over the internet.

JapanGal: According to your link, using a consumer-grade geiger counter you should measure background radiation for about 12 hours, then measure the food sample for another 12 hours in order to give the measurements anything approaching statistical significance.
If you plan to do this in a supermarket, make sure it's one that's open for 24 hours.

The Sendai mayor is great at wasting money, I don't think she will be re-elected next time. In addition to wasting money on the panda she has also spent money on an Anpanman "museum".
She has closed a fairly new swimming pool and leisure centre located near a subway station on the grounds that people could use private gyms. Then, a few weeks later she announced the building of a new pool in an area difficult to reach by public transport (but within the city and not far from an existing pool).
She has done almost nothing to help rebuild damaged areas of the city and rarely visited the evacuation centres. When she did visit she just gave everyone there a lecture and left without talking to anyone.
Meanwhile, my residence tax has soared this year (unlike my income).

Sony products do seem to be of rather poor quality these days. I wonder if Apple products will start to see a similar trend now that Jobs is gone. Will we see robust, metal computers replaced by flimsy plastic ones? Time will tell.

Hikozaemon: If the Y400 million is Ozawa's own money why didn't he declare it in the annual report of his assets to the Diet? He claimed he only had about Y200 million. At the very least he is guilty of making a false declaration there, but I wonder if that can be punished.
Furthermore, this Y400 million that Ozawa didn't declare as part of his assets: has he paid tax on it? where did it come from? At one point he claimed it was part of an inheritance, which means tax records should exist to verify that claim. He should be able to produce those records. If he is lying he must explain the source of the money. I expect it came from bribes. I do hope he doesn't fall "ill" again before he gets the chance to explain, especially since he has claimed numerous times that he would like to explain everything in court.

issa1: If Koizumi were back in charge there would be no meeting with the South Koreans due to his worship of war criminals. Koizumi was a hopeless failure as a leader: he failed to privatise the post office, he failed to reduce the deficit, he introduced laws that led to the creation of a huge number of poorly-paid, temporary workers, he antagonised neighbouring countries with his arrogant attitude. Bring back Koizumi? No thanks.
As for Abe: what an utterly useless PM he was. Did he achieve anything at all? Being a flag-waving, black-van supporting nationalist nutcase doesn't make a person a suitable PM.

Non-violent protest, including obstruction, sit-ins, chaining yourself to railings etc is fine with me. Marching outside the Japanese embassy in Canberra achieves nothing; physically blocking access to the factory whaling ship gets results.
