The Japanese people are free to hunt whales in their own waters, but if they travel halfway around the world to do it then others have a right to protest.

I hope Sea Shepherd can successfully obstruct the whaling vessels and limit their catches.
To the hysterical types calling for ships to be sunk: please note that obstructing whaling operations, e.g. by preventing whales being loaded onto the "traditional" factory ship, is not necessarily violent or aggressive behaviour. If the Japanese wish to catch whales, let them do it in Japanese waters. Once they start travelling half way around the world they can hardly complain if citizens of other countries object and take action to stop them.

I think there were four whaling ships in the Antarctic last year. The number of crew is kept secret due to paranoia, but let's assume there are 100 crew per ship, 400 in total.
If $27,000,000 is being spent just to protect the fleet, that's $67500 per crew member. Then there are the operational costs of running the ships (fuel, provisions etc), which can't be cheap. The government claims to be against waste, but clearly it would be cheaper to pay the whalers to stay at home in bed, rather than carry on this fiasco year after year. It's only the pig-headed bureaucrats in the fisheries ministry that see this as a good way to spend my taxes: firing them would save even more money.

What will the music/waffle ratio be? I don't want to hear Anne wittering on about her love life, nor do I wish to hear about the Edo period. Think I'll stick to the internet radio.

If building the apartments is a waste of money now, surely it will still be a waste of money in five years time.
They should build the apartments now, make TEPCO pay the construction costs and use them to house people evacuated from Fukushima.

Plenty of people are languishing in Japanese jails having been convicted with no evidence, where is Mr Ozawa's concern for them?
Tell us where you got the Y400,000,000 from Ozawa.

It would be nice if Miyagi would test the food for radiation, rather than the debris, although if the debris is considered dangerous what does that say about the surrounding areas?
The media also seem to be ignoring the fact that these piles of debris, often placed next to schools, are full of asbestos. Another fail for the so-called journalists.

Just because some nutcase dentist is offering these things doesn't mean that they are popular: maybe they haven't sold any and are simply seeking free publicity (job done).
I expect someone will be offering stick-on warts next as they are supposedly seen as attractive by some people. Maybe a discount could be offered for a warts/wonky teeth combo? かわいい!

Many Sendai subway stations have escalators that only go half way up the stairs, meaning you have to walk the rest of the way. They seem completely pointless.

The distribution of the detected plutonium, mainly to the north west of the power plants, suggests that it did indeed come from the power stations and was carried by the wind in that direction. High concentrations of other radioactive isotopes are also found in the same region.

Who are the "we" in the title? I don't think the author can be referring to the Japanese people there.
Let's see: "we want politicians with a lot of experience representing a highly diverse range of backgrounds", yet the Japanese people, of their own free will, choose the son of the previous guy every time. No experience, no diversity, that's what the people want.
"Politicians who are constantly electioneering are not what we want", yet I'll bet you any sum of money the Japanese people re-elect the clown Tanigaki, who has done nothing but posture, grandstand and snipe at the DPJ since the March disaster, at the next election.
"We want politicians who ... will not be labeled as “incompetent leaders” in the foreign media", never mind the foreign media, even politicians labelled as incompetent by the Japanese people themselves are re-elected over and over again. Yoshi Mori, with his 10% approval rate as prime minister, is still in the Diet, re-elected by a Japanese electorate choosing his incompetence over any alternative they were offered.
I would love to see politicians who fit the ideals listed by the author but the fact is that the Japanese people prefer to elect useless, corrupt, self-serving idiots. They do this willingly and without coercion and therefore have no grounds for complaint as the country gradually declines into a shadow of its former self.

These guys borrowed Y400,000,000 from Ozawa, yet no one is asking where the money came from. When Ozawa disclosed his assets he claimed they came to less than Y200,000,000, so that is a lie right there.
If Ozawa suddenly has Y400 million that is unaccounted for why isn't the tax office investigating? Has he paid tax on that money? If not, why not? Why is the tax office turning a blind eye to blatant tax evasion?
More to the point: why are the utterly useless Japanese journalists ignoring this?

Alas, I fear Mr Hamada will be stitched up the Supreme Court, the same court that regularly issues judgements that flout the constitution.
I also wonder why Mr Hamada was upset or concerned that Olympus were poaching staff from other companies. That isn't illegal and workers are free to move from one company to another if they are offered more money or better working conditions.
That said, I'm glad that Mr Hamada has exposed workplace bullying: all too often the companies that do it do not get named and shamed in the media.

When the government prints lots of money, a.k.a. quantitave easing, it's fine. Do it yourself and they come and take you away.
Printers and copiers also leave difficult-to-see marks, unique to each device, on printed pages and copies. This allows the government to link copies to a particular device.

The typhoon has been downgraded to a tropical storm since 9 pm last night, so why is it still refered to as a typhoon by the hysterical media in Japan? Then we had the TV all last night telling us it's "extremely windy", accompanied by pictures of a flag hanging limp, trees not moving at all (despite the announcer claiming they were) etc. OK, it rained a lot, but in Sendai the winds were quite modest, with a few occasional gusts.

Cleo: the school you describe sounds ideal. Unfortunately, my wife, who tends towards the all-out study approach to learning, would probably side with your friends and claim it's not "good" enough. And when it comes to making such decisions I rarely prevail.
It's also true that Japanese language teaching can be poor in international schools. My friend sent his daughter to juku to keep up her Japanese whilst she was at the international school.
