Jeff - On the contrary, it' much better, because the driver can jump out and open the door very quickly without having to go around the car!

Andreas Zachcial - Totally agree that the behavior of the German Embassy was embarrassing! But that was for political reasons as much as maybe some ex-pats in Tokyo panicking. Going to war means sending soldiers, something they do already in other countries.

As a teenager I used to take my road bike apart to care for all the parts, but with today's high-tec machines, you would need specialized tools and knowledge, as supposedly bearings and suspension systems are "maintenance-free". And two years ago my "fake" Louis Garneau frame came apart after 5 1/2 years of usage because the rear suspension was not working properly anymore and thus created pulling forces on the chain stay part, tearing it apart! That suspension needed yearly maintenance but it wasn't even written anywhere!

Wow, so they are basically saying there is no control to check whether the turbine is working properly? That's insane, I mean it could start burning (happened before) and cause a major forest fire during dry season!

Comic conductor, yes, but JR efficiency at its best: I mean getting all the passengers out, getting the train out of the way, getting another, clean train to the platform, and no more than 16 min delay! That reminds of how I once witnessed a repair guy dropping a box of screws on an moving escalator. It took 2 weeks to get that thing moving again, lol!

Agree that the character of the dog will follow the owner's upbringing. Unfortunately it doesn't start here: careful breeding plays a big roll as well, but it is difficult for a buyer to be sure that no inbreeding happened. With dog's that are not that common, like Tosa dogs, or dogs where lot's of prize money is involved like Shepard in Germany, this might easily happen. And some breeders of pit-bulls and similar breeds might even try to get an aggressive mix on purpose because it will sell better to certain individuals.

How about closing the trail head from the "5station" and make that place for shopping/enjoying the view only. Climbers would have to start where the old ones did, down at Fujiyoshida Shrine.

Wish I could be there, but about 301.000 applications for 30.000 places gives a less than 10% chance, maybe next year I'm lucky, but I guess the numbers will just go up again..

Ooh and come to think about it, it's nothing so new anyway, places with all-you-can-eat sushi are asking to finish your rice and don't only eat the toppings.

cleo - finally someody got it right! And for all you cry-babies: I have seen quite a few unfinished dishes coming back from the customers not because of quantity or quality but just because someone on TV once started the "70%" diet, whereas you should leave the last few bites on your plate to save some calories! So crazy, just order smaller portion or sauce/dressing on the side. But speaking up is of course too much to ask from the average OL!

Maybe part of the agreement lists 3D data usage to other companies...this dark pic reminds me so much of the first "Resident Evil" movie with a cute little girl's hologram saying "You are all gonna die!"

That's what sushi robots are for, all problems mentioned above solved. Only point of worry would be regular cleaning, otherwise it could get unhygienic. And these machines are actually the single most reason that sushi restaurants spread this much in Europe.

ben4short - it's not that much a cultural thing actually. Go to any restaurant kitchen in Europe and you will hear lot's of shouting and, esp in the higher level French and Italian ones, sometimes a hand or foot moving...because preparing food takes a lot of concentration. I have been working in a dozen restaurants (albeit service) and recently started in a hotel restaurant for the first time: that kitchen staff is the worst bunch I have encountered, ever. Because there is no shouting or hard words, they are forgetful as high-school students, it's just irritating.

Yes, the Japanese way of using money is totally upside down now: Housewives and young people use a card for all kinds of small purchases, whether it be a cup of coffee or some stuff at the conbini, just because they think they have to collect bonus points with their card or it's "motainai", wasted. Makes me mad sometimes, because I am working behind the counter, and sometimes I can even see that they have lot's of cash, but they still want to use their card!

Well, the manager of the Aeon mall here in Sakudaira is not only a woman, but a foreign (western) one as well, since the 3 years I've been living here. So, it's not only talk, but substance as well.

My mother back home fell down the stairs a few weeks ago and broke her arm. She turns 74 this week, has been working her whole live, horse riding as well. The thing is, people become older and some of their internal "system programs" slow down, don't function as well as they used to do.It might be the eyes, ears, balancing system. But there is no warning light turning on to alert the person or those around them. The long lives has brought wisdom, which makes up for shortcomings in body power, but sometimes it doesn't make them recognize that their judgment is wrong. These people have probably cleared snow from roofs their whole lives, and those winters from 50-60 years ago were much worse than what is coming down now. Probably did it least year, maybe even last month, without any problem.

And on top of those rules, the license is only good for 3 years and you have to go and renew it without any notice like fore drivers license. If you forget to do it in time, well good luck as you might be charged for owning a gun illegally!

This creature is as close to a dog as a farm-bred pet-ferret is to a mink. You can complain all you want, but in the end it's just another animal bred to purpose, which is being a little cute pet. No difference to cattle bred for beef, or even closer those cage-chicken that produce cheap eggs.
