I think it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
On the one hand, I don't offhand see how "parallel images of Nazis and Israelis" relates to the "Sociology of Globalization". To the extent that it does not relate, the prof would seem to be pressing some issue or other.
On the other hand, we are kind of in the dark here as to how the prof claims these images pertain to the issue. To the extent that they are pertinent, the furor that this has caused will tend to suggest that over-sensitivity (or outright manipulation) leads to the false proposition that to criticize Israel is to be anti-Semitic.
As far as students being intimidated is concerned, it's difficult to see how the prof could be intimidating with respect to a single point. I can see how the prof's opinion is personal, but that is a professional prerogative. As for his opinion being political, no one seemed to say what political agenda he was pressing.
My bottom line here is that professors have an obligation to make sure that the materials in their course are relevant to the general subject are of the course. To the extent that materials are relevant, the are free to, well, "profess". Students have an obligation to contest their professors. And Israel is not above criticism--even criticisms that are couched in particularly painful terms.

JoeBigs,
If religion goes to establishing motive, then I think religion does matter. However, I would agree that the crime is not more heinous because of religion.

Helter_Skelter,
Again you miss the point. There were neither millenial Jews nor millenial Iroquois still alive to press the claim to the land. Deed-holding Palestinians still remain, although if the Israelis can stall long enough, they too will pass away.
I think it's safe to say that Jews and Arabs have terrorized each other. And they continue doing so today. The right of return has not been forfeited. It is just not being enforced by those with the power to do so.

Helter_Skelter,
Nope. Not relevant. Pretty much the same for the Iroqouis in upstate New York.
There's no question that Jews have had a presence in Israel for millenia. It's not true, however, that the Arabs did not care about the land. Even so, that is really not the point.
Jews were a minority population on the land that is not Israel, promised the right of return to those they expelled and have now reneged on that promise, realizing no doubt that the fulfillment of it is inconsistent with a permanent Jewish state.
That is what Abbas is exercised about.

I think the article is fairly clear about why that is. Israel cannot remain a Jewish state and a democratic state if it acquiesces to the right of return. To proclaim that it is a Jewish state closes the door to that right.
That Israel is the ancestral home of the Jews is not relevant. That is ancient history. The expulsion of the Palestinians from their homeland is contemporary.

Why should he and what would it matter if he had? I'm not sure that Saudi Arabia is an Islamic state. Iran is a much more likely candidate for that term.
However, Abbas is not concerned with the idea of the existence of a Jewish state somewhere. He is concerned with the idea of the existence of Jewish state in Israel.

teleprompter,
The only pattern which I am yet detecting is your tendency to use irrelevant data and to omit a showing of causality for the data you cite.
Your latest foray into rent control entirely neglects why New York and San Fransisco have high rents. Among other reasons you might consider the inflationary effect of foreign capital:
http://dc.urbanturf.com/articles/newstrends/dchas4thhighestmedianrentsincountry/
I get it that you don't like government control. However, it is the function of the federal government to control problems which the states and the people have been unsuccessful in controlling on their own. Of course, if you don't think gun deaths are a problem, then your rejection of federal intervention makes more sense.

Sarcasm wears thin. However, call for Bush, Cheney and company to be indicted along with Obama and I'll gladly join you.

We almost always need to look further than a single factoid. The Washington D.C. data is classic post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy absent proof that there is a causal relationship.

SuperLib,
It doesn't bother me at all. I'm just curious as to your evidence that Saberi is innocent. Because she's a woman? Because she's pretty? Because she's an American? Because all of her neighbors agree that she couldn't possibly be an intelligence agent?
I don't know if Saberi is guilty or innocent. But I don't think I'd accuse anyone of thuggery just because they tried and convicted an accused spy. Can you think of any country that would not convict a spy--barring those who wouldn't even bother with a trial?

teleprompter,
I think that when it comes to guns, the UK and the US are not at all comparable. A ban on guns in the US might not reduce the US murder rate. However, the experience of the UK is not very relevant.

I think that what we have seen is that the US is not so strong that it can unilaterally enforce its will. That has been shown in every major conflict since World War 2.
The US is strong enough to remain in Iraq against the will and law of Iraqis at present, but it cannot sustain that effort without the cooperation of the Iraqi government and people. Absent a clear vision of what we are trying to achieve in Iraq, the prognosis for permanence is not very good.

Those "free" elections come to you courtesy of an American occupation of Iraq. Iraq will have its first truly free election only after the Americans leave.

I thought the security pact was still provisional and subject to a plebiscite at the end of June. If that is still the case, the nearer we get to June, the more damaging any further such incidents will be to the security pact.

...you know Saberi to be innocent? ...Iran tried and convicted Saberi in secrecy? ...Iran has so far refused to force-feed Saberi?

I think it more likely that you have calculated a release age and cleverly related it to fecundity. I don't think there is any evidence that Iran is interested in denying Saberi a child.

I don't think that intelligence professionals routinely list all their clients.
Saberi may be entirely innocent. However, that she is a stringer for the BBC and for NPR would in no way compromises her ability to ply spycraft. It would only makes her cover better.
Innocent or guilty, Saberi will probably be the beneficiary of some deal-making. And Iran will have made its point.

For some of those who are convinced that Saberi is unquestionably innocent, perhaps there will be a growing understanding of how force-feeding is pernicious practice.
