TokyoLurker, perhaps you can check with the Japanese embassy about any nationals or casualties (I really hope not, for your friend's sake):

Hopefully Indonesia will ask for some international aid, if and when it's necessary; those poor people.

She's cute, but honestly as a guy I don't understand what the big deal is about Ms. Michibata. There are plenty of Japanese women I've seen (not "tarento", just beautiful girls you see about) who could easily give her a run for the money. Is it because she has a bit of an exotic look because of her mixed heritage? I don't really understand the fuss, but good for them since they look happy = ).

There are plenty of mainland Chinese who have deeply critical things to say about the situation; those unafraid of speaking up, in spite of the consequences, are truly worth their ownership of Chinese pride. Don't get so caught up in the jingoism and fervour that you cannot turn a critical eye inward.

As noted in the article, there are still tremendously stark economic inequalities in its populace and graft amongst the highest levels of political office, amongst all the other troubling social aspects. China still has a very long way to go, and it's my hope that the world will firm its resolve and hold it accountable.

Perv! Can't these guys get their thrills at home watching internet porn?! And they should let school girls wear pants! If girls want to dress provacatively on their own time, that's their business but making teen girls wear short skirts is sexist.

While I agree that it's slimy behaviour, it's a bit reactionary to insinuate that there is an actual mandate in place to enforce a "short skirt" dress code. The length of most school uniform skirts seem pretty reasonable; the girls who bare skin, more often than not, are choosing to roll them up. Again, it's not an excuse for these weak willed clowns to get their creep on though.

This is a complicated situation, from all of the information that's come out thus far. I suppose the only good that will come from this is that there will be some sort of movement going forward on the larger issues at play here. Hopefully the needs and desires of the two children will not be forgotten in the ensuing chaos and acrimony of the coming legal battle. I suspect the kids will have a hard enough time as it is, reacclimating and reintegrating into Japanese society.

This is a very tragic incident, especially so considering it was an attempted rescue of their grandson. I hope he makes it out okay.

Whether it's excessive or not, the media isn't necessarily alone in driving this madness. It's the same thing you see the world over ... people like to read about the salacious little details of those in the public eye. I believe some of the moderators here have even commented about this, in regards to page traffic. If you really don't like it then don't post and don't read, simple as that. The fact is, though, alot of people do.

Youtube actually had the clip for a while, where she was interviewed after the infamous "betsu ni" incident and ended up crying buckets. It certainly goes to show good looks don't amount to a thing, if character is lacking. Someone else alluded to it in one of the Noriko Sakai threads, but there are allegations of drug use by KT and his wife Shizuka Kudo, as well. Don't expect to see the celebs + drugs angle getting dropped anytime soon.

I find it strange that there is far more sympathy being expressed than is usual, for JT. If it had been a 17 year old male, alot of people would be baying for blood, calling him out as a psycho, etc. There certainly wouldn't be any call for "help" or counselling. It seems rather hypocritical...

I understand the need to be especially cautious, particularly with certain segments of the police dept., but no one is saying you need to break the guy's jaw. You're simply speaking up and using the tools available i.e. in this case, the culture of shame and "face" by pointing him out and if necessary, holding him for police (I'm thinking of a case fairly recently where I believe a 17 year old was being groped, and crying, when a fellow passenger stopped and held the guy until police arrived).

Being a foreigner certainly carries with it some baggage depending on all those involved, but if the girl / guy is visibly upset and not saying anything, I'm sorry...but you need to do something. We can't just turn a blind eye to things like this, regardless of consequences.

I think this is a good initiative too. It sickens me to think that girls / women who are groped feel it's too much trouble to say something. They have every right to stand up for themselves. Once again however, as evidenced by several posters' anecdotes, you are working against a cultural mindset in an uphill struggle.

Osakadaz: while I applaud your restraint and understand your reasoning as to why you didn't grab that punk, I still wish you would have said something to him, even if it meant following him to another carriage to avoid embarassing the girl. If you're silent in the face of wrongdoing, it almost seems like implicit agreement, or at least apathy, and it simply reinforces the idea that they can continue to behave like this with impunity. I have to ask this question again -- if this were your sister, friend, wife, daughter...would you simply "let it go"? I'm certainly not encouraging you to hand out a beatdown, but at least speak up for people who maybe feel powerless to speak up for themselves.

Tkoind2, as usual mate, cheers to you for another lucid, poignant post. In the end, youth and beauty fade in time ... if you have constructed your relationship on that foundation, what will be left to you once they are gone? Grasp for the things of real import, fight for ideals, and people, worthy of all those romantic platitudes. Sadly, it seems it is not enough to simply love someone anymore; still, you must pursue the things in your heart.

P.S. It put a bit of a smile on my face to read some of your accounts of finding real, honest, love for all of the best reasons. Good for you ... = )

I also think it's pretty disturbing to see people cheering at this point. What an odd reaction. Wait until all of the facts are in before deciding to hang and quarter someone. You don't have to look any further than the front page here on JT, to see an example of alleged justice that has gone completely off the rails (Sugaya Toshikazu's case).

Congratulations Mr. Hatoyama, and best of luck; you have tasks of tremendous difficulty before you. Ozawa certainly seems to be the puppetmaster in the shadows, so we'll see what happens should Hatoyama stumble. The costs of raising a child in Japan seem enormous by relative standards, and with the dearth of proper paying full time work (not to mention the harsh stance towards pregnant women in the workforce) the system appears almost deliberately detrimental to young married couples seeking to start a family. Promising per-child, monthly aid is nice but in the end, the unemployment / partial employment issue needs to be addressed effectively (something every other country is struggling with as well, to be fair).

Regardless of what a woman may be wearing, it's not an open invitation to put your hands on her, ever. I really can't understand statements like this:

I find Japanese girls really provocative with their skirts and short pants. I really think that they are looking for problems.

Would you still think this way if someone saw your girlfriend, or wife, or sister, dressed in a short skirt, and acted on their impulses? Try considering things from their point of view.

And yes, women need to be taught to stand up for themselves -- but unfortunately, it seems the prevailing mentality and social / cultural values discourage this.

azzassa -- except it wasn't mj, it was amphetamines she was arrested for possessing. In Japan, as we're seeing now, the laws in place are incredibly strict with regards to drug possession. The problem some people seem to have is the selective nature of the application of said laws, which I understand; however, if you ultimately believe in the rule of law then you need to understand why others here applaud the hardline stance being taken.
