As near as 5 years ago, Bako Haram had been a peaceful civil movement -- until their leader, M. Youssef was tortured and killed at a police station. No one brought to justice for this and no explanation was given. In the past two years, the clashes between Muslims and Christians claimed over 1000 lives from both sides. So, it is not only Muslims killing Christians or vice versa. It is not certain who is fanning the flame of these sectarian clashes. The fact is that, on both sides, civilians are paying the highest price in the conflict between armed Christian and Muslim groups.
This article is a little bit skewed in its portraying of one side of the parties as being the sole perpetrator of the whole conflict. It is not the case: there is certainly more to it than the author of this news article could ever comprehend.
It is not realistic to consider the bombings of the places of worship within the context of a religious conflict. Ethnic clashes are not new to Nigeria: They occurred over and over again in 1978, 1981, 1986, 1987, 1989,1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2004. It seems that the US is looking for an opportunity to persuade Nigeria for military cooperation, leaving the control and security of the West African oil to the AFRICOM (US Africa Command).
Furthermore, according to the WikiLeaks documents, the US wants Nigeria to split in two by the year 2015. It is interesting that religious clashes, after a long pause, have to start after the US showed interest in the partition of Nigeria. The expectation is that the South Nigerian Christians will be in favor of a partition, leaving the poorer North by itself with ethnic clashes and high unemployment. North is not 100% Muslim, it is a mixture of different religions and sects. It is no secret that, once the partition occurs, the South will invest heavily on the military, the US and, Nigeria's one of the closest allies, Israel, being the primary arms provider. To understand the underlying reason for any international event, just look who is going to be the ultimate prize winner: In this case oil and weapons trade.

About republican candidates: After Obama, just when I think the US political cesspool cannot produce other vermin, more disgusting ones crawl out.
Just check out some campaign pledges of these homo sapiens:
Herman Cain (discontinued): "There's one other thing that we could do. We could deploy our ballistic missile defense capable war ships."
Newt Gingrich: "First of all, as maximum covert operations-- to block and disrupt the Iranian program including taking out their scientists... All of it covertly, all of it deniable."
Rick Perry: "One of the options is to have a no-fly zone over Syria at the same time you're putting those types of sanctions against Iran."
Mitt Romney: "Finally, the president should have built [a] credible threat of military action, and made it very clear that the United States of America is willing, in the final analysis, if necessary, to take military action."
Santorum: "I proposed exactly the things that Herman and Mitt Romney suggested, which was to give money to the rebel forces."
More recently, though, Bachman, Santorum, and Romney ratchet up their rhetoric on Iran and suggested military intervention through crippling missile attack on Iranian key interest. Obama recently said all options were on the table.
Do you still believe such a country whose president and presidential candidates are simple war mongers would bring peace to the world? Whatever peace they bring, it would be peace-after-nuclear-bomb type peace just like what Japan suffered and has been suffering in the hands of the US occupiers. They make a client state, take away your sovereignty, and have their soldiers rape and kill your people in peace time with no consequences. When Iran becomes another Japan, believe me, first thing, US going to sign a treaty and a SOFA with them.
This is what the US candidates could offer best to the people of the world.

@smithinjapan: I guess Iran's not preparing for a peaceful 2012. Pity.
So, by the same token, do you feel the same type of pity when the US conducts military drills all across the world, not only just on its own territorial waters? So, you want to take away Iran's sovereign right to conduct military exercises on international waters? No, as far as I know, there is no Iranian bases on the island of Okinawa and no Iranian soldiers gang raped and battered a school girl walking home? I have been conducting a research on the actions of the US soldiers in Okinawa and what I see is disgusting and really pitiful. A nation (with a military budget one-100th of that of the US) conducting military drill on its territorial waters should be a much less concern to you than the de facto occupation and rape of Okinawa. Or, the existence of 900 + US bases across the world, for that matter.
