While the act of rape is horrible in any context or situation, there's a big difference between the depraved acts of individuals and the systematic implementation of sex-slavery by a government! Come on Hashimoto! Stop ruining my opinion of my beloved Osaka!

It's only bad for English teacher (and anyone) who's working here to send money home. And if they're forced to teach English in order to finance large expenses abroad they've got a lot problems. haha I would think it'd be great for English teacher since any money they receive from abroad would translate into a lot more yen, and be bad for Japanese since it becomes more expense to travel abroad.

I'll never understand the length of holding times for minor offenses. I had a friend who was in jail for 1 and half months for getting drunk causing a non-violent disturbance. If this poor guy was under the same type of stress as my friend was AND was innocent on top of it all...

Poppycock. (is that a real word). Yes the reasons for the war were wrong, and many of the actions taken were wrong, but that doesn't mean that at the time of enlistment the individual soldiers didn't fight for love of country. 50 years from now, while the actions of Bush/Cheney and the lead up to war in Iraq will be despised, that doesn't taint the soldiers who fought and died in it.

On this one I've got to side with Abe. Japan's neighbors should focus on Japan's current policies and not on symbolic gestures. A comment on a previous article put it best when comparing these visits to US officials paying respects at Arlington. Every trip to the cemetery isn't reaffirming their belief in dropping bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, its honoring those who died in defense of their nation.

And what would that say about the USA, and how we treat our allies if we pulled up stakes and a year later NK actually DOES attack?

@lostrune2 Thats because #1) The US is a fairly rich place & #2) We tend to see ourselves in others and lending a helping hand is what we'd hope others would do if the situation was reversed.

To all the people upset about them protecting Tokyo first (only?). While I live in Tokyo, my first experience living in Japan was a 2.5 year stint in the one and only Osaka. I love the place. I love the people. But there is absolutely nothing there or strategic importance. Attacking Osaka would be like attacking St. Louis. Sure you could DO it, but WHY? NK isn't going to commit national suicide (which is what any attack on Japan would be) for the sake of taking out the comedian school and tsutenkaku.

I'll say this list is a good sign of human compassion, and I for one wish we could have that kind feeling without the horrible loss of life for a change

I live in Nishi Shinjuku, and every weekend there are right-wingers marching by with angry signs and anti-Korean/Chinese slogans. Once they even dragged a effigy behind them in the street. There are crazies everywhere...

Open MindedMAR. 15, 2013 - 07:38AM JST US cars manufacturers don't like competition. I am wondering why... Are they afraid better cars are made oversea maybe?
cough rice tariffs cough
But seriously, I think it's more an issue of costs and the deep hole the US car industry is digging itself out of. I thought I read that Auto maker free-trade would be off the table for 5-years?
