I find it curious that some people are saying democracy isn't the best form of goverment - but that it is at the moment.
Isn't the assumption here that the question is asking whether democracy is the best form of government that currently exists?

The US has no defence treaty with the ROC (Taiwan), just something that says it should provide it with defensive weapons. Not that Japan would need the US' help to deal with Taiwan.

BurakuminDes, they've already allowed the detention period to be extended. If they were running scared they would have released him days ago. It rather suggests that actually they're willing to stand up to China - or simply ignore it and allow the law to be applied.

smith, plenty of countries have a process where the initial detention period can be extended. Otherwise you'd have to choose between potentially hamstringing an investigation by having a short maximum detention, or giving too much power to the prosecutors by allowing them to detain whoever they liked for ages without automatic review.

Geez, what ageist people most of the voters are. There are people at the age of 50 who shouldn't be driving, whilst there are careful and considerate drivers into their 80s and beyond.
What is needed is regular re-tests, say every 10 years or so. That could be shortened to every 5 years after say 80. But banning people because they have reached age X is ridiculous.

Japan has a choice. It can fund its own defence or it can let the US do part of the job. Option 1 wouldn't require Japan to host US bases. Option 2 ost certainly does.

Jesus, mountains made out of molehills as usual on JT.
He bowed deeper than he had to - so what? At least he was aware he should bow and didn't try to do the minimum protocol required.

If the US is willing to renegotiate, fine. If it isn't, Japan is bound by it. Unilateral withdrawal would damage Japan's negotiating power around the world, as any country could retort "but what's to stop the LDP reversing this once they get re-elected?" and demand more concessions.

Given the fact he looks very different in this picture I hope the allegations of racism (no one turning him in when he was SURELY so recognisable) and ineptitude (how could the Police not find him given he was SURELY so recognisable) will cease.
Well done to the Police for getting him finally.

75 years would be the equivalent of abolition, given the fact children can't be charged.
I think a statute of limitation is the cornerstone of any just society.

Exactly. That's the problem the DPJ has - the public got tired with the LDP, not that they thought the Opposition would necessarily be better.

Is he mad?! The Japanese financial sector is already too heavily regulated! That's one of the reasons why the economy is so reliant on exports - the services sector is too weak.
If he follows through on this he's just going to make the economy worse not better.
